POLITICAL NEWBIE EYES SEAT …
We’re always saying how more “non-political” people should seek elected office in this state … well, one of them from our founding editor’s own backyard is doing just that.
Chapin, S.C. accountant Erin Long Bergeson – a small businesswoman who has never sought or held elected office before – says she will run for Lexington county council next year. Bergeson’s stated reason for running? She wants to make things easier on her fellow small business owners and taxpayers.
“I’m not a politician and I’ve never served in political office nor been on a government payroll,” Bergeson told us. “I’m a small business owner in Chapin who has a deep desire to serve Lexington county. I’m a fiscal conservative who is concerned about the direction we’re heading – and believe I can use my experience as a CPA and as a small business owner to make county government more efficient and more effective. I will strive to always be accessible, accountable, trustworthy and hard-working.”

But … where is Bergeson on specific fiscal policy? You know … like the massive tax hike being pushed by outgoing county council leader Johnny Jeffcoat? Is she one of those candidates who talks a good game only to tuck tail and run when it comes time to opposed government-sponsored theivery?
Apparently not …
“Based on my assessment of the original proposal, I was completely against (it) and – unless there is something that has changed – my position remains the same,” she said, referring to the eight-year, $270 million tax hike proposal that was rejected by Lexington voters last fall.
Tax hikers are hoping to put an eight-year, $300 million hike on the ballot in 2016.
Bergeson said the recent flooding that rocked the Midlands region of the Palmetto State has indeed created new infrastructure needs, but that she hopes to address those needs by better prioritizing existing spending – not raising taxes.
“Given the recent events, we will need to address the roads issue and I am hopeful the needs can be addressed via a more efficient use of our current tax base,” she said.
That’s music to our ears …
Dino Teppera – a press spokesman at the S.C. Department of Education – has already announced his intention to seek this seat. Teppera is also running on a fiscally conservative platform.

There’ll be a long line, brothers, if she gets elected! I saved her foto but cropped it — don’t know the significance of her in the middle of that field, though. Everyone talks about getting a “fresh face” into political office — and here she is..!!

The comments that she is in with Johnny Jeffcoat are cause for serious concern. If true, rather than a fresh face, it will be the same old dung in a new package, something LexCo can quite well do without.

I hope she sticks to her guns on the tax increase and doesn’t become easily swayed by the lure of “free money” when her fellow councilpersons start explaining it to her how things are done. Good luck and Godspeed!

Right from the start… Mungo just hosted a fundraiser for her (at his house). I have met her and like her. And she is conservative but, from what I experienced, she doesn’t want to ‘make waves’, ‘upset the apple cart’, ‘shake the leaves from the trees’. We will see who aligns with whom….
She was hand picked by Johnny Jeffcoat to run and he openly said at a previous meeting he will support her. Also, how do you file when filing opens in March?

You should care, Jim. If this is true, no doubt Johnny and her have made arrangements for the favor to be paid back, and I’m not talking about a victimless meat-for-meat swap, either. You’ve been around long enough to know how these roaches roll over here.
God, I hope not. If so, his endorsement should be the death of her candidacy as we know he already has arranged favors in return for his support, and I’m not talking about stuff that would not cost the taxpayers, either

Don’t give us political platitudes, tell us what services you are going to reduce or cut and which you will create or increase. Just because you promise to spend tax dollars “differently” does not mean your way will be “better”.

That means she is also the hack for that cabal of JJ cronies such as Loveless, Mungo’s, McLeod and the homebuilders lobby that does nothing but cause the road and congestion mess then takes the money and runs.
