apparently the wedding chapel was a secular business. and the pastor’s sermons were subpoenaed because they sued the city over an lgbt ordinance and the city was gathering evidence that they may have endorsed political positions in their sermons. If you did a little research, u could easily find this stuff out.
The suit was about the city rejecting a petition for a referendum on the LGBT rights law passed by the city. The mayor gave up on the subpoena and the court forced a referendum and the LGBT rights law was rejected today by two thirds of the voters.

The Odgaards refused to rent their wedding chapel to a same-sex couple for a wedding after the husband learned it was a gay wedding. The couple stated that the wedding chapel is an “expression of their faith” and that is why they think they are being discriminated against. Seems to me that the wedding chapel is a business and renting it out is a commercial transaction or even contractual transaction. They settled for $5000 and admit that business had been slowing at the chapel of the last couple of years and that the boycotts that followed their refusal to rent were the final nail in forcing them to close their business.
So, seems they are complaining about having their perceived right to discriminate blocked, framing it as a “violation of their religious freedom”. Speaking of reframing, Cruz is a master.
