UPSTATE ACTIVIST LOOKING FOR ANSWERS …
Remember Joshua Kimbrell? He was an up-and-coming force in Palmetto State politics … and likely will be again.
But his political trajectory was radically reoriented last year when he was hit by the sort of allegation most people simply never recover from – a scandal that rocked the socially conservative Upstate region of South Carolina to its core. Kimbrell was accused last fall of sexually molesting his own son – who was three years old at the time.
His accuser? His ex-wife, Kacy Lyons Hatmaker.
“If Kimbrell is innocent, then his accuser is guilty of the most insidious character assassination we’ve ever seen,” we wrote early on in the case. “If he’s guilty, though, there is literally no punishment we view as too severe.”
Well guess what: Kimbrell was innocent.
The allegation against him was determined to be unfounded, and prosecutors (eventually) dropped the charges against him.
Now, Kimbrell – who was viewed as a likely congressional candidate – wants answers. Specifically, sources close to the evangelical leader/ radio host say he wants to know why it took solicitor Walt Wilkins so long to clear his name – and more importantly, what prompted police to arrest him in the first place.
Fueling the political intrigue? As it happens, Wilkins is also a leading candidate for the congressional seat of Trey Gowdy, who is widely believed to be stepping down at the end of his current term.
Beyond those potential political motivations, Kimbrell also wants to know what role a deputy solicitor who is mulling a S.C. Senate bid may have had in the investigation.
Will he get those answers?
We shall see …
All we know is Kimbrell’s allies – who aggressively defended him from the molestation allegations – are now chomping at the bit to see that those who managed the investigation/ aborted prosecution held accountable.
As they should be …
In most cases we’d be tempted to say Kimbrell and his supporters should just “get over it” and move on with their lives – happy to have had their names cleared. But this isn’t “most cases.” A seismic allegation was made – and determined to be false.

It would provide him with an avenue to attain some sort of redemption in the public arena if the charges against him were high-lighted in the press. A civil action against his ex-wife just might draw a lot of attention. It has to be newsworthy and dramatic, a man with a mission to repair his reputation. If that does not work, there are not that many places you can go to to “get your good name back.”

If charges were brought and/or delayed being dismissed for a political advantage, then that is the true height of corruption.
Has it ever occurred to anyone that Wilkins was waiting for the DSS case to be resolved? If a case cannot be proven to the preponderance of the evidence standard in a DSS case, then there would be no chance at a conviction and the solicitor’s office has more than enough reason to drop the investigation at that point. However, if DSS had been able to prove its case, then further investigation would potentially have been warranted. It’s quite simple. Couldn’t the solicitors office wait until the DSS was finished before Kimbrell was charged?
I believe the DSS case came about because of the criminal allegations, so no.
The DSS case was not a result of the criminal allegations, they had been leveled and dismissed twice before in other jurisdictions. The Ex wife shopped around until she found a sucker detective who wanted to score points with the Solicitors office
( or at least one solicitor who has political aspirations) and wanted to tickle the paws of the ex. This is simply a detective acting out of selfish motives (one can only imagine) and tried to ruin a husband and father with no evidence, just the word of a psychotic ex wife who was trying to leave the state to go live with her next “victim”
There is so much more corruption hiding in this case than we may ever know.
Do the Right thing, City of Greenville, and cut that detective loose, punish that solicitor and clean up the City!
