FLOODWATERS RAISE RISKS …

taylor|| By TAYLOR BROWN ||  This month’s record-breaking flooding in South Carolina has shattered all sorts of rainfall records – but it’s also produced many acts of outright heroism and even more examples of people coming together to care for their friends and neighbors in the Columbia Community.

One of these heroes is Becky Grantland.  Becky knew that because of the flood and its aftermath, people would need to be immunized against tetanus.  She got the all rolling by contacting S.C. Rep. Kirkman Finlay, who then contacted Ryan Hall, vice president of Palmetto Baptist Hospital.

Ryan was eager to help and said that one of the hospital’s physicians, Dr. Stephen Ridley, was also working on this issue.

Palmetto Baptist, along with the Columbia Fire Department, dispatched its mobile care units to the Whispering Pines area of Columbia, S.C. and over 700 people were immunized.  The mobile unit then moved to South Beltline where more people were able to receive care and be vaccinated against tetanus.

To me, these types of acts epitomize the greatness of our city and why it will emerge from this recovery stronger than before.

I would also like to thank all involved for their leadership, especially Rep. Finlay who has gone above and beyond serving his constituents and community during this time of crisis.  Unlike many of the politicians who used this disaster as a means for shameless self-promotion (or selfies from helicopters) rather than really help their constituents, Finlay took his food truck out with the Ramirez Family’s “Family Fresh Mex” food truck to provide free food to first responders.

If you need a tetanus shot, please don’t wait.

“The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reminds all storm-affected residents that a tetanus vaccination is recommended if it’s been 10 years or more since your last tetanus vaccination or you have experienced an injury and your shot is more than five years old,” a release from the agency noted.  “In the event of a puncture wound or wound contaminated by floodwater, individuals should consult a healthcare provider.  For those who require a tetanus vaccination, there will be no-cost Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccination clinics.”

For more information on how you can get your vaccination, click here.

Who cares how a kook votes, if they are kooks then they are already beyond giving a shit about their opinions. Someone who rejects peer reviewed medical science is beyond hope and should be avoided in all settings.

Yeah cause “peer reviewed” science never gets it wrong.

“Consider the story of the German physicist Jan Hendrik Schoen. In 2000 and 2001 Schoen made an amazing series of breakthroughs in organic superconductivity, publishing his 2001 work at a rate of one paper every 8 days, many in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, and the Physical Review. Eventually, it all seemed a bit too good to be true, and other researchers in his community began to ask questions. His work was investigated, and much of it found to be fraudulent. Nature retracted seven papers by Schoen; Science retracted eight papers; and the Physical Review retracted six. What’s truly breathtaking about this case is the scale of it: it’s not that a few referees failed to pick up on the fraud, but rather that the refereeing system at several of the top journals systematically failed to detect the fraud. Furthermore, what ultimately brought Schoen down was not the anonymous peer review system used by journals, but rather investigation by his broader community of peers.”

And no one ever retracts “peer reviewed” science – except when they do (all the time) http://retractionwatch.com/

Peer review is the best process we have. It may have its flaws but I fail to see how your few exceptions disproves the rule.

Such a encouraging heart warming story with an important message until you decided to take a cheap shot at our governor.

You mean like paying FITS to post a story about him under the guise of urging people to get tetanus shots? That kind of “shameless self-promotion?”

Except for the zoo there ain’t nothing in Columbia worth visiting………..Just another state capitol with a state university in it – like that’s not in just about every other state capitol in the union……
Looks like that bragging about how Columbia was the first planned state capitol ain’t so shit hot now is it????
Hell, at least these conceited Virginians (I don’t know who is worse in the “We’re shit hot” department – Virginians or South Carolinians!!) had enough sense to relocate their capitol upstream from a fucking swamp…..and hell parts of Richmond still get flooded!!! But at least they had enough sense to put their capitol building on a fucking hill!!!!
As far as I’m concerned the South Carolina state line ends 25 miles south/southeast of I-85 from North Carolina to the Georgia line. Ain’t nothing past that boundary that can’t be found elsewhere with more variety to boot
Just returned from a business trip to Charlotte and Raleigh and I’ll take either of those cities over Columbia any day of the week.

to the capitol city
where the girls are all pretty
and the weather is famously hot

Girls are pretty all over but I will grant you one thing: even as a hillbilly who is used to “blue cold” I nearly froze my ass off at Ft. Jackson in December 1971!!!! it was that humid cold shit I guess…..humidity is a bitch either way as far as exposure is concerned…..
No thanks on hot humid weather. When I retire-retire it won’t be in the humid south that’s fer sure…..The older I get the less I tolerate humidity. Probably go back to West-by God “Virginny” due to global warming the weather ain’t as cold as it used to be and it don’t snow near as much as it used to…….I know of a ridgeline or two near the Virginia border that is damn near perfect for my plans…………
Loving the weather in the Upstate right now!!!
Gonna ride my motorsikle all over the place this weekend!!!!This is PRIME motorsilking weather fer sure!!!!!
Serioulsy, we threw in for water and other listed supplies from the local “Be-Lo” for shipment to y’all. just about all the grocery stores up here have someone at the front door with a list of stuff that is requested.
Only thing is…nobody has listed tampons……I figured that might be on the list – no joke. Diapers are listed but not feminine products….

The Colonel October 14, 2015 at 1:58 pm

“Feminine Hygiene Products” have been on most of the lists I’ve distributed. I actually used a “feminine hygiene product” to plug a pipe while we mucked out the shut off valve early last week. One of the wives had brought us lunch (ChikFilA never tasted so good) and she had the idea. We appreciate all the help we can get – from where ever we can get it!

One thing I feel obliged to comment on, I haven’t heard the first “Where is FEMA/”, “Why aren’t the gubamint doing more?” questions. I spent all of last week doing tear outs and trying to get some folks ready for remediation and rebuilding. My crew of curmudgeons will be out this weekend starting some rebuilding and tearing out some houses that got missed in the first go around.

It’s been remarkable, school kids showing up to help unasked and then working like they had a vested interest in the outcome, passers bye handing out water, snacks, tools and resources.

sparklecity October 14, 2015 at 2:13 pm

Yep, ground pounders carried their own supply of tampons in the “big sandy”. they will plug up a wound for a while……
Stay safe and don’t get hurt or snake bit….

Rakkasan October 15, 2015 at 7:06 am

“One thing I feel obliged to comment on, I haven’t heard the first “Where is FEMA/”, “Why aren’t the gubamint doing more?” questions. I spent all of last week doing tear outs and trying to get some folks ready for remediation and rebuilding.”

Why would they call out for FEMA help if you and volunteers are taking care of them? Duh. But, wait till they learn about the $33K cap on FEMA rebuilding money. Yes, there are other gov’t sources for $$, but that will take months. Then we’ll see how the free-market loving gubmint haters feel about FEMA and gubmint. What they will hate is that they can’t get more $$ from them.

Nölff October 14, 2015 at 2:45 pm

Point taken. I head to Spartanburg for metal concerts every once in a while. I’ve seen some things… The “tent city” portion of greenville has everyone beat though.
