Letter: Catherine Templeton’s Port Job Criticized

Dear Editor,

Does any one else have a concern when the S.C. State Ports Authority (SCSPA) hires Catherine Templeton to a $235,000 job without any experience at all in the port business?

She is an exceptional talent.  But ports?

Even more concerning is the board approved promoting their state lobbyist to vice president of operations at a salary of $250,000.  Again, no experience necessary.

I always believed that newspapers were the publics oversight for these kind of problems.  Where is your paper?  Where is The State? Where is  The Post and Courier?

The public reacts the way our newspapers react.  They assume it must not be a very big deal.  Maybe its not.  But they should have to explain there reasoning.  For us that understand business there can be no good explanation.

-Charleston, S.C.

Her experience in the ports business generally is not the critical question- rather, its whether she is qualified for the specific job description. I would submit that an experienced labor and employment lawyer is imminently qualified for a human resources position, perhaps over qualified. On the other hand, whether such a position merits that type of salary is a very fair question.

Where is The State? It’s hard to find, but it’s those couple of paragraphs between the pages of ads and Gamecock football “news.”

Why would she want to?
She makes more money now than he makes in Congress, without being under regular public scrutiny. She is in a totally unaccountable job now.
I also assume she has all the usual state perks for those who make that kind of money and state benefits.

Well, Sanford gets no respect in D.C. Templeton could get amendments passed and receive choice committee assignments. It is all about representing the special interests in her district. It is no mistake she is living in the district gaining a residence there to run in 2016. Besides, getting two pension checks from the feds and SC, free health care all compliments of our tax dollars, leadership positions in the House are available. Why not?

No concern whatsoever. She’s demonstrated, in a variety of capacities, that she is more than qualified for the job.

SPA pretty much operates free of any controls similar to Santee Cooper. They have there own boards and make there own income. Who they hire and what compensation is paid are management decisions.

Templeton is just like all of Gov. Tricky Nicky Haley’s appointees, a completely unqualified failure. Haley has the worse record for appointees in SC history. Nearly every one has been replaced due to some sort of embarrassment. Templeton is no exception. She ruined DHEC as just a lackey for Haley. Supporting Haley’s moves to allow dumping of Georgia sewage on SC border land, in order to deepen the Savannah Port, after Haley got millions in bribe money from Sav. Ports Authority supporters. Templeton didn’t even leave her house on Sullivan’s Island to show up for work in Columbia.

Haley has been brought up on Ethics charges 3 times in the first 6 months in office. SLED is her guard dog, and the Legislature are her bitches. Just disgusting, the most crooked Gov. in SC history since Pitch Fork Ben Tilman. Yet, fools continue to support her because she’s “A WOMAN.” JUST PLAIN SAD!!!!!!!!
