DEATH TOLL, DAMAGES, ETC.

Nine people have now been confirmed dead in South Carolina due to the onrushing waters of “Floodmaggedon,” while local officials are already predicting damages in the billions of dollars.

Both numbers, sadly, are only going to rise …

Speaking of rising, that’s what’s happening to streams and rivers across the Palmetto State … causing multiple dam breaches and severe localized flooding.  Meanwhile roadways continued to collapse and wash out as a result of the heavily saturated earth.

Take a look …

Curfews remained in place in many areas for a second consecutive night, and huge stretches of Interstate highway remained closed to traffic.

Meanwhile mandatory evacuations were being issued in various parts of the state.

One such location?  Forest Acres, S.C. – a municipality just to the east of waterlogged downtown Columbia, S.C.  Citizens residing in a broad swath of the city were instructed to leave their homes due to the impending collapse of a dam.

“If you don’t want to leave, give me the name of your next of kin,” one resident was reportedly told.

Wow …

Meanwhile in Florence County, mandatory evacuations were issued for residents living along the Lynches River.

“Rising flood waters are an imminent danger to residents and responders,” a release from the local emergency management agency noted.

In other news, S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson said his office was collecting reports of price gouging during the storm, urging residents to use the twitter handle @SCPriceGouging in the event they saw examples.

Those looking for bottled water in Columbia, S.C. (ahem)?  Here’s a list of locations provided by the S.C. Emergency Management Division (SCEMD).  The agency also has a toll free number you can call with questions: 1-866-246-0133.

mom and gramps were commies October 5, 2015 at 6:57 pm

Barack Hussein Obama was born in 1961, to a Communist mother. Ann Dunham was known as a radical leftist from childhood.

Ann Dunham’s father, Stanley Dunham, was also a Communist who enrolled Ann in a Communist sympathizing middle school and took the family to a Communist sympathizing church in the 1950s. The FBI had compiled a file on Grandpa Dunham because of his red activities.

While young Barack Obama was being raised by his grandparents in Hawaii during his teen years, Grandpa Dunham introduced Barack to staunch Communist Frank Marshall Davis. Davis is described by Obama in his book “Dreams from My Father” as a mentor he could always look to for answers. Davis was was a member of the Communist Party, a poet who routinely praised the Soviets in his writings, a pedophile, and a hater of Christianity and America. Communist Grandpa was good friends with Davis.

his daddy was a communist October 5, 2015 at 6:52 pm

Senior Obama was a communist derive from a 1965 article he authored in East Africa Journal. The article titled “Problems Facing Our Socialism,” critiques an earlier economic paper released by Kenya’s government. In it, the elder Obama argues for removing “the disparities in our country such as the concentration of economic power in Asian and European hands while not destroying what has already been achieved and at the same time assimilating these groups to build one country.”

“What is more important is to find means by which we can redistribute our economic gains to the benefit of all and at the same time be able to channel some of these gains to future production,” Obama’s father wrote. “This is the government’s obligation: it should have come out with a plan in the paper to achieve this.”

I don’t think so.Obama trashed his ‘white’ grandmother that raised him to protect Rev.Wright….

Obama is slandered his elderly grandmother to make Rev. Dr. Wright look better. Obama’s white grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who was raising him and earning most of the money in the family while his own mother was off in Indonesia working on her 1067 page dissertation on peasant blacksmithing, rode the bus each morning to her job as a bank executive….

Reply
Victorious Secret October 5, 2015 at 5:49 pm

You shouldn’t. SCEG built an entire 2nd dam a few years ago. they also released pressure into the Saluda river yesterday. They are monitoring accordingly from what i’ve seen.

Does anyone in Columbia know about sand boils? I imagine any dam that fails gets them before the whole thing lets go.

Reply
jimlewisowb October 5, 2015 at 6:32 pm

You can google to get a more detailed answer but it primarily has to do with the difference in pressure between the water on one side of the dam vs. water on the other side of dam

Most pond dams do not create enough pressure difference owing to their size

I have had 2 pond dam failures in the past 30 years

The first failure was a result of poor compaction. Soil became over saturated and broke up

The second was a result of location of overflow drain. Older ponds tend to have overflow pipe at base of dam and this allows for leakage or breakage around the exit pipe either which can cause the dam base to erode

A properly compacted dam with a top overflow drain, sufficient spillway and daily maintenance should not create a hazard

Unfortunately dams in subdivisions belong to every homeowner but no one takes responsibility for day to day care

I live in LexCo. This is the second night of curfew in unincorporated areas. As I sit in a Waffle House that is open, wsiting on my order, I am aware that very few eateries of anyvstripe remsin open right now due to the curfew.

I sort of understood s curfew for last night. Tonight, traffic is picking up as hazards gradually subside, though admittedly, msny still exist. Today, there was ample opportunity for dangerous roads and other hazards to be appropriately marked and closed. My question is, under whose order are we subject to a curfew, tonight? Is this REALLY necessary? I have been told if you are found out after curfew, YOU WILL BE ARRESTED AND TAKEN TO JAIL. Is this legal? Will it stand up in court if you are legitimately seeking food or beverage, or perhaps going to and from a friend or a relative’s home to check on them or comfort them, perhaps with food orvdrink?

Perhaps it is time for civil disobedience to the almighty LexXo thugocracy, maybe ACLU interventuon.

the curfew makes it a lot easier to keep looters and the “hey yawl watch this” crowd off the streets, protesting it just makes it harder for the first responders. i think it is more of a civic responsibility to stay out of the way

Duh October 5, 2015 at 7:40 pm

They don’t want you out on the roads when they have emergency personnel out working. How fricking hard is that to understand? I hope a tree doesn’t fall on you while driving around town – because some rescue worker will be pulled away from trying to help the intelligent and sane people who are staying home.

Hi Stumpknocker! I have no bitch with the people at the bottom doing actual work to fix things and make this better. I do believe I have legitimate questions and concerns as to the necessity and validity of the continuing curfew.

It is no secret that many of these politicos, frequently the ones you noted as having dropped the ball, love to feel that surge of awesome power and glory in their gonads as they rule over the peasants. I am not advocating for going out and loitering, looting, or causing disturbances, but I am really starting to doubt the necessity of the curfews as they have been explained to me, as well as their negative impact on legitimate commerce and normal freedom of movement.

The first clue he’s a government “worker” is that he wants government force to be directed on you.

In the end all government workers resort to being “Little Hilter’s” when you scratch beneath the surface.

It’s all about what government says you should do in their minds- and the fact they are working for government makes them the “decider”.

Knuckle draggers one and all.

I called all three Waffle House’s listed in Lexington Co. . One said they were open but no carry out.One said they were open until they were shut down.

The third one was open but OUR ‘sources’ reported suspicious behavior by someone on a computer:

Wearing heavy clothing in warm weather-wearing a trench coat
Was asking questions that are not common about the location of something, security
measures, or availability of chemicals or other items.
Attempted to conceal the face by turning away when someone approached

Being evasive when asked a direct question, attempts to change the subject
Giving too many details that are unrelated to the conversation

Kept mumbling ‘corruption in columbia’ and ‘bomb the dikes’.

More later.

Would a New Black Panther member ride in a boat adorned with a Confederate Flag to escape from his flooded home?

I don’t know. Would a racist redneck thank the black rescue worker who pulled his ass off the roof of his flooded out double wide with the rebel flag in the yard.

Reply
Speak D Truth October 6, 2015 at 12:42 pm

Most likely, because most people that fly the flag aren’t racists and many aren’t rednecks. If you notice, I referred to a specific demographic and portion of our society that share a common goal. You tried to lump together a very broad group of people with a variety of goals and objectives. If you had said Klansman then your question may have been worthy of consideration but you didn’t.

Reply
Jack October 6, 2015 at 2:24 pm

I’m sorry, so you are saying racist rednecks who fly rebel flags are too common in SC to be a specific demographic and portion of our society? Well I guess you would be the expert.

Reply
William October 6, 2015 at 3:04 pm

“most people that fly the flag aren’t racists.”

As a lifelong resident of this great state, who grew up in a small town, I call BS on that comment. I have know plenty of guys who loved to fly Confederate flags from their boats, their truck, and their frat houses. I have even known a few who fly them in their yard. I can truthfully say they were not all rednecks, but almost all of them were more than a little racist; and if you have a redneck flying a Confederate Flag; you can damn sure bet he is a racist.

Reply

Many people have a sticker on their truck or boat that aren’t racist. Many are members of the SCV. The SCV is open to ancestors of confederate soldiers of all races.
