The last forty-eight hours have inundated South Carolina with more than just unprecedented amounts of rainfall …

Images of devastation have been seared indelibly into our minds … and the Palmetto State is by no means out of the woods.

(For the latest developments, click here).

We know what the disaster looked like on the ground, but there’s a nothing vantage point that’s every bit as likely to take your breath away.

Here’s a look at “Floodmaggedon” from space (via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) …

(Click to play)

Just … wow.

“An atmospheric river,” the agency noted.

For those of you keeping score at home, this water vapor video runs from Thursday, October 1 through Monday October 5.

The amount of rain that fell over South Carolina is enough to give each American a 20oz bottle of water every day for 179 years

Well, I guess everyone in SC can bank on a hefty homeowner’s insurance increase next year.

if they own their home, they will realize a drop in property value, if they have a mortgage, they are truly fucked

Happened in Florida, 2005. The mortgage will be cheap compared to the insurance.

correct because of the high cost of insurance, if you can get it, trying to buy a home in a flood plane, greatly reduces the value pre flood. if you have a mortgage you will have to have it no matter what the price, and that is why those people are truly fucked

Yeah, since gubmint subsidies of flood insurance are phasing out it is getting VERY expensive. Look at Zillow for any of our coastal housing areas. Notice how many are for sale. Wait. What? You want gubmint welfare to subsidize your flood insurance? Well gosh, you deserve it. You’re white and make a lot of money

Administrators at Jackson Hole High School pulled the plug on “America Day” – citing concerns that celebrating the USA would alienate some of their young people, the Jackson Hole Daily reported.

There was a school system in Tennessee that banned the American flag. There was a school district in Massachusetts that banned a day to celebrate the Land of the Free. And there was a California school district that prohibited American flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo.

You can see details from space that can’t be seen from the ground. You wouldn’t even notice the state boundaries on the ground. They are even visible through the clouds. :-P

Fox News is reporting 4 dams have “burst”. I live in a lake community with a dam that holds the lake (I think 20 acres) to a certain level. No houses of note are down stream. Not to belittle the impact, but it is not exactly Murray, Fontana, or the Hoover that broke, is it?
