The community has been buzzing for the past week about the wreck that involved Rhodes, which led Rhodes to discuss the issue on a local morning radio show on April 6.
Martin said Rhodes had tried to hide that he was in a wreck that Martin said people had speculated involved driving under the influence – which Rhodes said isn’t true. Martin, who told the council Tuesday that he had never stated any of the information as fact, said he came to Tuesday’s meeting because he couldn’t respond on the radio to the criticisms Rhodes made of him on that radio show.
Rhodes said he was in a wreck in Aynor as he was driving a rental car to a meeting in Columbia, but he was not at fault. A copy of the accident report was not available late Tuesday.
“Mr. Martin seems to think it was a coverup because I didn’t call a press conference,” Rhodes said after the meeting. “What, am I supposed to hold a press conference to say I had a wreck?”
Rhodes said he had to go on the radio show to defend himself against Martin’s accusations, adding that if he didn’t respond it would have appeared that he had done something wrong.

If I were in charge of it, I’d use it as an opportunity to meet with the NAACP or whomever to try to work out some sort of compromise on not using offensive symbology while trying to transform the organization more to a Civil War history club instead of coming across as a bunch of old doods that loved good Ole Dixie.

Remembering that the preacher was with him he swerved back onto the road narrowly missing the yankees. However, even though he was sure he missed them , he heard a loud “THUMP”…”THUMP”. Confused, he glanced in his mirrors and when he didn’t see anything, he turned to the preacher and said, “I’m so sorry reverend. I almost hit those two yankees.”
“That’s okay,” replied the preacher. “I got them with the door!”

I’m not sure that’s how it was started, but I haven’t really done much research on it. If it made itself an organization like the Sons of the American Revolution, it’d probably have a better chance of sustaining itself in the long run. As it is, there’s not many younger people wanting to appear to be racist by associating themselves with the SCV. If it were more of a civil war history club and removed the confederate battle flag from everything, there’s a chance it’d be less awkward for any person who has a black friend to join.
No matter how one tries and spin it to others, the Civil War will always be about racism and white supremacy to the general public. These groups will likely dwindle into nothing in the coming decades.

Lincoln freed the slaves? The Emancipation only involved the slaves in the Confederate states over which he had no control. It did nothing for the skaves in MD or DC.
