|| By FITSNEWS || Downtown Columbia, S.C. flooded this Thursday.  Pretty badly, in some places.

In fact in one of those places, a University of South Carolina (USC) public safety officer had to rescue a woman trapped in her vehicle.

Take a look …

(Via Cola Daily)

Ordinarily, we’d launch into a screed about how University police – by definition – are employed by an agency which does not perform a core function of government.  But in this case we’ll just say we’re glad this woman is safe and would commend the officer for their bravery.

Better applaud the USC cop as I do not think there will be much applause for the football team this season – just saying.

We’ll take what we can get – like for instance:
# 1 International Undergrad and Grad Business programs
Nations Best Honors College
Best Value in Kiplenger and Princeton Review
Top 10 Sports Management Program
Number 7 Marine Sciences program
Number 4 Psychology program
Nation’s best first year student program
1 of only 40 universities nationwide with multiple Carnegie Foundation recognition
Number 1 in SEC for athletes on the Academic Honor Roll (335)
Number 17 Girls Soccer
Pan Am Games swim record breaker 2015

And I can go on…

I love USC and all of their teams but just do not think this is going to be a good season – that’s all.

Like most universities, there’s a lot more going on than football/basketball and it often gets lost in all the noise. Just like to point out the good news now and then.

Sadly, I suspect you’re right about football but then I look back on 1992 and a guy named Steve Taneyhill… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94T74MQxcfY

I hope they prove me wrong this year in football – I really do as I enjoy the games – I always pull for SC schools. And I am glad you pointed out the other good stuff – we need to hear it more often – thanks!

sparklecity September 24, 2015 at 5:32 pm

Who is that?????

The Colonel September 24, 2015 at 5:38 pm

“Just a big old cock” was written and performed by a guy called Patrick Davis. If you look closely in the background of the video you’ll see Steve Tanneyhill, George Rogers and another number of other Gamecock luminaries. Davis writes and performs a number of songs about South Carolina and the region.

sparklecity September 25, 2015 at 1:33 pm

Never heard of him….
Only “regional” SC writers, musicians, etc. from the midstate/Columbia area that come to my mind are James Dickey and “Hootie and the Blowfish”

The Colonel September 25, 2015 at 1:47 pm

You’ll recognize some of his song writing:

Buffett’s “Something about a boat”
Lady Antebellum “We Own the Night”
Darius Rucker “Be Wary of a Woman” and “It’s all over”
Jewel, Charlotte Church, Alabama, Justin Moore and many others have recorded his songs.

Here’s his tribute to the Mother Emanuel Nine: https://youtu.be/xFdUng3lHeY

You can thank Ms. Darla Moore (a Democrat) for the rise in you vaulted business programs!!!!!!
Good to see the University of South Carolina is ranked #4 in the psychology area – since that saying that Serkerlina is too small to be a republic and too large to be an insane asylum rings more true every day. The Great state of South Carolina needs all the mental health professionals it can get its hands on and pay them a pittance while they’re at it……

Reply
The Colonel September 24, 2015 at 5:35 pm

There’s no doubt that “darling Darla” had a lot to do with the success of the business school initially. The school is now at the point where success breeds success. But we still owe her a huge debt of gratitude!

Reply
Doris September 24, 2015 at 9:02 pm

“Darling Darla” sure as Hell built one ugly ass building, though. The trustees were going to stand up to folks building such ugly monstrosities, but then when Darla came with all that green, well , here we go again. Somebody owes Jim Holderman an apology.

The Colonel September 24, 2015 at 9:12 pm

I take it you have never been in the building?

Yeah it’s kind of ugly from the outside but on the inside it has to be the most functional and well laid out, well-designed instructional building I’ve ever been in. The classroom spaces are state-of-the-art and there are places for groups of students to meet as well as facilities for conferences and facilities for businesses to use when consulting . The old business building was not functional, it was poorly laid out and lacking in much needed space.

I would encourage you to visit the new building if you haven’t.

Good Advice September 25, 2015 at 8:09 am

The School of Music holds recitals in that building, most are free. Good excuse to go and see the building while you’re there, I highly recommend it.

Rocky Verdad September 25, 2015 at 3:13 pm

I had a girlfriend named Darla once. Man she was awesome in a dark room with the red lights on.

sparklecity September 25, 2015 at 1:26 pm

Not according to some state congressional members of the Great State of South Carolina and Queen Namrata………………….
How soon some forget inconvenient truths!!!!!!
Only time I’ve personally saw Ms. Moore was when she gave a speech at the 50th anniversary of Greenville Tec.
The lady’s got a lot of class and looked pretty good (from a distance anyway)
South Carolina needs more leaders like her as far as I’m concerned.

What does one actually do with a Sports Management degree?

Reply
The Colonel September 24, 2015 at 6:04 pm

It’s designed for people who want to work in the front office of sports teams or manage sports facilities or even YMCA type operations. It’s really nothing more than a focused management degree

Reply
Squishy123 September 24, 2015 at 9:44 pm

So their chance of even getting a job that requires that degree is slim to none.

The Colonel September 24, 2015 at 9:52 pm

Actually, it’s a growing field with a lot of opportunities. No, they don’t ask get to go tho the front office of the Panthers but not all of them are trying to get there. The degree is actually “Sports and Entertainment management” and in a state where tourism is an 18 billion dollar a year growth industry there are lots of possibilities.

Duzlie Fartin September 25, 2015 at 9:53 am

It is a valuable degree which gives a person flexibility and MANY options.

Reply
The Colonel September 25, 2015 at 9:48 am

Really? That’s just the current list (things that were announced/earned in the last 6-8 months). If you really want, I’ll start listing again.

The Business School is a perennial winner.
The Marine Science program – ditto

Kiplenger and Princeton are new entries
Honor’s College is new

Reply
Jackie Chiles September 25, 2015 at 10:07 am

Sorry, but marine science is about as valuable as my history degree. Very few people get jobs in marine science, and those that do are not paid very much. The people I know from the USC marine science program ended up working a zoos for a few years, then realizing they had to live a real life, ended up getting jobs as realtors or other sales positions that required generic degrees.

Also, the 7th best marine science program? Do you really think employers really see much of a difference between the 7th and 10th, or 50th? If you’re not the top 1 or 2 or Ivy League, it’s mostly just window dressing.

Out of all the accomplishments USC has, the Business School is the one to brag about.

Many degrees like sports management offer little to no additional value. I wish that the DOE reports on salary outcomes per school were broken down into majors so we could see the true value of each degree.

Kramer September 25, 2015 at 10:09 am

so you are saying you have a generic degree too?

I find that chart highly questionable. No dental hygienist I know makes $60k per year.

I’m more talking about this site that was created by the department of education that looks at what grads are actually making by examining IRS returns 10 years out from individual schools:

https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/

If your chart were correct, then a dental hygienist makes more than the median graduate of every college in South Carolina, including USC, except for MUSC grads who make a median of $73k.

That’s Wheat Street in front of the Child Development Center, the water was about 2.5 – 3 feet deep at the bridge and moving very fast.

Reply
Mike at the Beach September 26, 2015 at 4:30 pm

Good point. Also, it’s the unknown nature of the depth that can make this kind of urban flooding dangerous. It’s just fun and games and a dry cleaning bill, right up until you take that last step into what you *thought* was two and a half feet of water and fall five or six feet into a pile of rebar or some other uncomfortable LZ.

“rescue”, would she have died had she stayed in her truck? I think “helped her get out of a fucked up situation she put herself in” is more appropriate.

Reply
The Colonel September 24, 2015 at 9:37 pm

The driver disobeyed “Rule 1” of Standing Water – never drive into it.

At the time of the rescue, the water was still rising but while the drive and her child were quite frightened, they were not in great peril (though they didn’t know that). During heavy rains, you’d do well to stay off Wheat Street, South Main, Sumter and Whaley near the Blatt Gym and the Engineering School. Whaley often gets 4-5 feet of water crossing it near the intersection of Whaley and Assembly. All of Five Points drains through Rocky Branch Creek that runs through Maxcy Gregg park, behind the Blatt and then under Assembly at the old Bombers Stadium.

So should ANYONE, who has EVER taken a check from a University be Forced to give back the money..

Because I think a majority of South Carolinians would agree, lazy-ass college professors are OVERPAID, and have violated the trust of the PEOPLE who actually WORK to pay them…especially w/ the exorbitant spikes in tuition since Obama took over.

And IF the money should be given back (and it should)…somebody’s gotta lotta ‘Spaining to do about getting FAT off the peoples’ dime while sitting on their ass, and pontificating counter-culture Bullshit…and perv-ing out, dirty old men, checking out the asses of coeds.

And if you EVER benefited from a college check (handout to lazy-self-important liberals) …raise your hand…and admit you’re a bloodsucking leech.

Most of those professors probably couldn’t get a job anywhere else and have basically useless degrees that can’t be used in the real world of work, so they fall back on “teaching”. Just think of the money that could be saved in these universities cut out some of these useless degree programs that these professors are benefitting from!
