You probably personally know as many American Muslims as I do – None. On the other hand, I personally know a lot of American “Christians” who I have no use for at all.
I know and worked with quite a few American muslims and they are some of the most vile and hateful people I have ever met. Not friendly, would not listen to the female managers, had no respect for fellow female employees or customers, thought the world owed them a favor. And the women muslims that I knew were always sad and depressed, could not discipline their kids. Not a group of people I would want representing/ruling this country. I prefer to be able to drive, vote, go out in public without my husbands permission and choose not to worship as I please.

I don’t see where he made a mistake in what he said, per se. His only mistake was not anticipating the inevitability of his opposition turning what he said into what he didn’t say. He isn’t “walking back” anything he said. He’s merely clarifying. Not that that means anything to those who already don’t like him.
Yes, if what he said is perceived as a mistake , it has to be clarified. And you are right that the press and his opposition did twist it a bit. But we know that anything a Republican Candidate says out there is going to be picked apart and misconstrued. I actually heard his comment when he first made it and I guess I filled in the blanks and interpreted it as a statement that was OK, because I know what he meant. The press will not be that kind.
You are EXACTLY right. And I would not say he was unaware that the people who hate him would attack him with his words. But the American people are who he is appealing to are cheering. The attackers would hate him, regardless.
