TALK ABOUT A CAUTIONARY TALE …
|| By FITSNEWS || Demetris Summers put up staggering numbers as a high school running back in Lexington, South Carolina. From 1999-2002, he amassed 9,076 yards and 120 touchdowns – and was the No. 2 running back recruit in the nation.
Hell, his totals still rank among the top fifteen high school rushing careers of all-time …
At the University of South Carolina, though, things started to unravel. Summers logged a respectable 1,125 yards and four touchdowns over his first two seasons, but was dismissed from the team by head coach Steve Spurrier in March of 2005 after failing one of several drug tests.
Summers pro career? Eh …
He was a member of the Dallas Cowboys for two weeks in 2006 before being cut, and spent two years as a backup for the Canadian Football League (CFL)’s Calgary Stampeders – rushing for 188 yards and one touchdown prior to being released by the team in April of 2010.
What’s he been doing lately?
Yeah …
Last November, Summers was busted for driving under the influence, crack cocaine possession (with intent to distributes) and illegal possession of a firearm.
This week the 31-year-old was arrested again for drug trafficking, possessing a weapon during a violent crime and unlawful conduct toward a child.
Here’s his latest mug shot …

Arrested along with Summers was his 30-year-old girlfriend Latesha Boykin. Meanwhile three children living in their apartment were placed in protective custody.
Sad …
If he’d been able to play by the rules, Demetris Summers would likely be finishing up a successful NFL career right now. He’d be set for life financially. Married. With a nice family. Maybe pursuing a career as a coach or broadcaster.
Who knows?
Instead? He’s a cautionary tale. Blessed by God with the sort of natural abilities most of us could only dream of … Summers somehow found a way to piss it all away.
We’ve consistently supported the right of American citizens to manufacture, distribute, sell and consume drugs. We believe that’s the free market at work … to say nothing of individual liberty. But Summers is an example of how drugs can ruin your life if you let them … which he did.
Hopefully he’ll get his act together one day …

Sad.
The future Shaq Roland.
yep lexington got what they wanted out of him on friday nights, and fuck that little black teenager after that, it is a right to life thing
He went from Lexington to USC and have every opportunity in life but he wasted it. No one fucked him but himself. All of that talent and he wasted it on drugs.
Lou knew the story.
I guess Dabo knew the same about Bellamy. I mean both were kicked out of their school but they should still count right? Of course Dabo is the only one to let a coke head busted for DUI (your kicker whose suspension just ended) as well a pot head busted for DUI play again (Smoking Sammy Potkins)
Sometimes being responsible for your actions is a life lesson. He failed. He had everything handed to him, all he had to do was behave like a human goddamned being for 3 years and he just couldn’t do it. The thug life was more attractive to him. So, fuck him… he got the life he wanted.
This is a prime example of why there are laws against the manufacture, distribution, selling and consumption of drugs… the issues that arise are not just the issues of that individual but they cross the individual liberties of others because that manufacture, distribution, selling and consumption of drugs causes that individual to make unwise and/or irresponsible decisions….
“[T]hey cross the individual liberties of others.”
Indeed! A very well made point that seems to escape all “hardcore” libertarians. (aka those that choose to ignore probability, statistics, and causation)
Never forget seeing a bunch of grown white men with “Cocks” on their hats yelling “meeeeaaatt” at the top their lungs.
It may have been the most homoerotic thing I’ve ever witnessed.
Uh, volleyball scene in Top Gun?
Except this was real life.
Winning!
All Demetrius was doing was conducting a “significant business transaction.”
See Thomas Ravenel.
It’s the gladiator class that every public university uses to further their brand.
Few get off the plantation and buy their freedom.
While old white males choke on fried chicken and peanuts while watching their “bulls” perform. And oh – if he doesn’t pull his load and holds back like Jadeveon….we’ll let dat boy know…
I’m going to jail;might as well get fucked up…
“Blessed by God with the sort of natural abilities most of us could only dream of … ” but only from the neck down.
Sure glad you ran this story Fits. I was trying to think of his name the other day, now I’ll probably remember it for a day or two.
On one hand, you want to feel some kind of sympathy can be extended, but in this case the ole John Wayne maxim seems to fit(paraphrase): “Life is tough, life is tougher when you do stupid shit.”

I don’t agree with you on much, erneba, but you nailed it.
Mitch is on drugs now….
Those damn drugs . . . if only the Libertarians would be gifted with amazing athletic talent, and the ability to control those “drugs” such that they are strictly limited to “recreational use,” and approved by the Free Market.
Fits, get your head out of your ass, quit being journalistically lazy and report the real problem here.
In this football crazed culture, high school students ( and in some cases junior high school) are placed on pedestals, treated as royalty, and given everything without having earned a damn thing, all because they can throw a football, run fast or tackle with a high degree of violence. Worse, 99% of these individuals are not taught that in life, you work for everything you get. These kids go on to colleges and universities where the only purpose they serve is to perform so the athletic department coffers and stadiums are full. They don’t have a snowball chance in hell of graduating or they graduate with a useless degree. After their eligibility has been exhausted, these young men are discarded for the younger, newer model and the cycle repeats. What becomes of the so-called student athlete? He is tossed out into the world, ill prepared to function (only 1% go on to play professional football where the average career last 2.7 years) and not surprisingly, fails miserably.
No wonder individuals such as Mr. Summers gravitate to drugs (sellingusing). Unfortunately, this story is nothing new nor will it be the last time we hear of a SC high school/College gridiron “great” failing at life and running afoul of the law.
I guess this aspect of the problem does not generate clicks/traffic which equals $, right Fits.
I remember that no matter what he did in highschool – Because he was doing so well for the team- he’d always end up getting away with it. Those great lessons result in what we have here now. Good job LEX hs coach!
