AGENCY SOURCES: STREET NAME PAINTS SCDSS IN A NEGATIVE LIGHT”
|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. governor Nikki Haley‘s scandal-scarred Department of Social Services (SCDSS) wants to change its “controversial” mailing address … by changing the name of the street itself.
Meaning South Carolinians would no longer be able to “rock down to Confederate Avenue.”
SCDSS – located at 1535 Confederate Avenue in downtown Columbia, S.C. – wants the City of Columbia, S.C. to rename the street, sources close to the agency tell us.
“It paints the agency, its employees and the work they do in a negative light,” one source said.
Really?
Last time we checked SCDSS was having no troubling painting itself in a negative light …
Confederate Avenue runs for roughly nine blocks through the historic Elmwood Park neighborhood of downtown Columbia, S.C. – culminating at the SCDSS headquarters – which is separated from the residential section of the road by a major four-lane thoroughfare.

According to our source, the agency believes the presence of this thoroughfare – an extension of highway 277 – makes the one block of the road on its side of the street an “extension.”
If the city of Columbia doesn’t want to rename the entire street, SCDSS plans to argue that it should be permitted to rename this “extension.”
Possible suggestions?
“Hope Street,” “Unity Avenue,” or “Mercy Way.”

The debate is the latest politically correct conversation reportedly taking place within Haley’s cabinet in the aftermath of her rapid-fire conversion on the Confederate flag, which was removed from the grounds of the S.C. State House earlier this summer. Previously, we reported on efforts reportedly undertaken by leaders of Haley’s Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) to ditch the S.C. Highway Patrol’s gray uniforms (and gray paint scheme on its squad cars) to avoid any connection to the gray military uniforms worn by officers of the former Confederate States of America (CSA).

The street was named Confederate Avenue because the state’s Confederate Soldiers Home, where destitute veterans and their spouses lived out their last years, was located on it from approximately 1910 until it was torn down in the 1960s or early ’70s. The last veteran died in the 1940s and the last spouses were moved to a different location in the ’50s.
How long before we start rewriting the history books to purge the word Confederate, or anything else that makes a significant percentage of people uncomfortable?

There is a street named ‘Nat Turner Blvd’ but in order to get that street to have that name they named it after a fictional character in a popular novel rather than naming directly after the racist murderer.

Just did some research. They are adaptive traffic cameras. They are for traffic management and reducing congestion. It’s the 2015 answer to timed traffic lights. Supposedly they system will make traffic flow better.

I figured as much, when I first saw them a couple of weeks ago I looked very closely as I was driving underneath it, figuring like CIC they were red light camera’s…but then I noticed they were pointed in a manner where they couldn’t easily read your rear license plate…and my super duper powers of deduction figured it was otherwise…so I ran the red.
