THIRTEEN OF NINETEEN FRATERNITIES SUSPENDED …

|| By FITSNEWS || Thirteen of the nineteen Greek fraternities operating on the campus of the University of South Carolina have been suspended due to “numerous recruitment, alcohol and risk management violations.”

The suspensions were announced after an emergency meeting with Greek leaders and school officials last week apparently failed to produce the desired compliance.

“Many organizations clearly did not take the meeting seriously,” a letter from the school’s administration stated.

As a result “more drastic measures must be taken.”

The guilty parties?

Alpha Epsilon Pi
Alpha Tau Omega
Chi Psi
Delta Kappa Epsilon
Kappa Alpha Order
Lambda Chi Alpha
Phi Gamma Delta
Phi Kappa Sigma
Phi Sigma Kappa
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Sigma Chi
Theta Chi
Tau Kappa Epsilon

What … no Lambda Lambda Lambda?

Anyway, it’s been a terrible year for fraternities in the Palmetto State.  Deadly, even …

Of course we’re sure all of this will get (cough) worked out prior to the school’s home football opener on September 12.

So fraternities can’t have alcohol at fraternity parties, but football players get multiple chances on illegal drug use? This slow clap is for you, USC. They’re fraternities. It’s alcohol. If it isn’t happening on campus, not sure why USC is getting involved.

Reply
Peter O. September 1, 2015 at 2:33 pm

Because the school knows it will get sued if something bad happens at these parties (see Tucker Hipps at Clemson)

“but football players get multiple chances on illegal drug use?” You must be talking about KKKlemson there. didn’t the kicker get busted for cocaine and only get a 3 game suspension? typical Tater fan cant get his facts straight.

Football is a net positive economically, even with the risk factors/liabilities. The dollars that flow from the football program dwarf every other USC activity outside of tuition itself.

So on an economic basis alone, they can afford to have a few losers they have to pay settlement for….while Greeks…well…you know, it’s mostly just a liability.(economically speaking)

So don’t go getting “it’s all so unfair” whiny on us. Think of it instead as you would a potential pledge coming to you that doesn’t have the funds to join, you see the picture now don’t you?

It’s not “fair”, but then life isn’t fair is it?

john September 2, 2015 at 8:13 am

and that is the mission of USC right? Football? Athletics? The Circus Maximus of Emperor Pastides – if all that counts is to be “economically positive” close the joint and start a professional sports entity and pay your players real salaries….

Exactly, college should be for higher learning, not athletic careers. It really peeves me to see a high school football star with a 2.5 gpa get a full scholarship to college over the kid who busted their butt to get a 3.75 gpa.

Reply
Quit crying September 2, 2015 at 10:58 am

You know damn well the kid that makes a 3.75 got accepted, but why would someone get a scholarship free of tuition when they aren’t actually making the university money over someone who is earning millions of dollars for the school? That’s what grants are for, and if he had more extracurricular activities he might have had a better chance at a grant.

blueyescrying September 2, 2015 at 11:56 am

I didn’t say the kid didn’t get accepted I just said they deserve a scholarship to a learning institute more than the barely average football star. They should get the scholarship because they are actually going to the educational institute to get an education, precisely what the school is for. And maybe that kid didn’t play sports because of some impending reason, or maybe they played sports but weren’t good at because they were actually studying to be smart, not to toss a ball. I’d still rather see the smart kid get the scholarship to become a doctor, engineer or scientist, something that will be beneficial to the greater good of society. If we didn’t have all these football students going to school to get some joke degree then maybe college wouldn’t be as expensive and the degrees they hand out would actually be worth something. Besides, if they are making the school so much money, then why does it cost so much to attend?

Quit crying September 2, 2015 at 12:31 pm

If you don’t think College is about money that’s the problem. Its all about $$ and no one said anyone had to go there. Yes the kid that makes the school money will be the one getting a scholarship over anyone not making the school money. Again there are grants for the students that have high GPA and even more for the ones that have “some impending reason” they didn’t play sports. As for your point that they weren’t as good Id be careful because a counterpoint could be made that the only reason the ball player had a lower GPA is because he was had to be at practice for 2-3 hours after school, in the gym for a few more, and then maybe had to work a job on top of that. You actually don’t know. But there are Grants available for kids with high GPA’s (and actually some scholarships too if you fit the criteria) but again no, a kid that does not earn the institution a penny should not be given a free ride over someone that does. As to why it costs so much to attend, there are always other schools (community colleges and State schools) that are less, or you could go to an IVY league school that puts more on education although a 3.75 might not get you in there. Again no one ever said you had to go to college.

blueyescrying September 2, 2015 at 1:00 pm

Oh I know college is about $, and that’s the problem. It should be about learning, period. And that’s the problem with our American institutions of higher education, they are too focused on menial things instead of being focused on producing the best of the best where it actually counts. College and University used to have a point, and that point was educating people to better the world. Now colleges are too focused on making money and producing brain washed robots. The whole system needs an overhaul. College should be for learning and football or any other sport for that matter should be for major or minor leagues. And honestly, I don’t think college should be free at all, whether it be for the football player or the smart kid.

While the lesson that buying access to a circle of friends that have the money to do the same has some benefits(for those that can), it’s probably for the best the organizations in question be drummed out of college life.

These paragons of virtue will get a chance after they graduate to buy friends and influence in power brokers circles, it’s called politics. And I’m many of them will, like ducks drawn to water. Or fleas to a dog.

Good heavens! You’re telling me that college students were caught drinking? Thank God that this type of behavior is only limited to Fraternities! I can’t imagine what would happen if this type of thing were going on with other underage college students. What if people under 21 that were in Student Government or the Rugby Club or AAAS or any other student group got together with drinks available? Oh that’s right, they all do and no one cares.

When I was at Clemson back in the day I rushed for a Frat when I was a Freshman and I’ve never met a bigger pack of wankers and douche bags in my whole life. I was the first to “de-pledge” that term and have never, ever regretted it.

Despite the window dressing…frats are still the same dicks they have always been. Sexual assaults, hazing, endangering health by excessive alcohol and drug intake, cheating scandals and just general community irresponsibility is still very much the norm.

Well done to USC for taking this stand and let’s see if the Intra-Greek council will stick to it.

Most people commenting were 1. Probably not in a fraternity 2. Got passed up by the hot girl and had to settle 3. Working for a guy who was in a fraternity because he was smarter and got the better job and the promotion(this a fact, fraternity members do better in school than non-Greeks)
Not sure why everyone not in a fraternity are so concerned with what’s going on for the members in them.

Frats “do better in school than non-Greeks”. Yep, when I was in school, those test banks and pre-written labs did the trick.
I was in a frat, got the hot girl and own my own business. The frat had nothing to do with the other 2.

I could care less about the frat boys but what is interesting to me is the jealousy and resentment of the non frat folk.

Why to outrage? Because you did not make it through rush?

Close them and cut all ties with the university. If students want to associate and gather and engage in private activities they have a constitutional right to do so. WTF this has to do with a university is beyond me. And maybe the university should be more selective from which donors, private and corporate (i.e. Coke) it accepts money. Under Patsides USC has become one big money and attention grabbing beast.
