MEANWHILE “COASTAL KICKBACK” INVESTIGATION SHOWING NO SIGNS OF LIFE
|| By FITSNEWS || Former S.C. Rep. Thad Viers hasn’t returned any messages from our website since he was indicted by a federal grand jury last year on money laundering charges related to a shady paving contractor he used to work for.
Viers pleaded guilty to one criminal count earlier this year related to the conspiracy, and was supposed to be sentenced last week … but then his hearing got postponed.
The 37-year-old ex-lawmaker is facing a decade in jail – although sources who have spoken with Viers say he’s confident he won’t get any time.
“Thad was going around a week ago saying his sentencing was postponed and he likely wasn’t going to jail,” one coastal source told us.
So … does that mean Viers has provided federal investigators with information related to the “Coastal Kickback?”
One of the most brazen campaign finance scandals in South Carolina history, the “Kickback” went down in 2009 when a shadowy network bundlers funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash through a fabricated network of corporations to select politicians in exchange for their support of a local tax hike.
The entity accused of orchestrating the scam? The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce – which controls the revenue from the tax hike (an estimated $20 million a year). In addition to allegedly setting up its shadowy contributor network, the chamber has also been accused of steering proceeds from the tax hike to businesses that supported it – without any transparency or competitive bidding process.
The scandal gave rise to the term “Myrtle Beach Mafia,” a corrupt political network that puts its own needs ahead of the needs of its community.
Anyway, as much as we’d like to be able to report that the postponement of Viers’ sentencing has resulting in a flurry of investigatory activity related to the “Kickback,” that doesn’t appear to be the case.
“Nobody’s saying they were recently re-interviewed by (the) government and no one is saying they got a subpoena or went before the grand jury,” a source familiar with the probe tells FITS. “In other words, there are none of the typical signs of a federal white collar crime investigation winding up pre-indictment. And no target letters – although I understand those are rarely used here.”
“It’s (been) FIVE YEARS since a lot of people were interviewed,” the source added.
Indeed. Maybe this whole thing is being swept under the rug after all?

The doctor tells this guy he has to wear a 24hr blood pressure monitor and every time he felt the arm band inflate he had to write down what he was doing at the time. The guy returns a week later, and his list read as follows:

In our mid myself and my dear buddy went for our physicals the same day and time. Since we worked for a contractor on a federal DOE site the exams were rather thorough.
The nurse had already commented on how goof my BP and heart rate were, 120 over seventy and 50 bpm. The next step was EKG . I mentioned to Risa, “Just wait until the other Wayne gets in here”. As I stepped out of the chest x-ray, I saw my bud with a nurse on his wrist and one of the doctors counting pulse in his neck. They would call them off when his heart “swoll up”. His pulse rate constantly stayed in the high 30,s to bottom 40’s. He told the radiologist , that if she used the standard exposure for his chest picture, there was a better than 50% he would diagnosed with an enlarged heart. That thing would swell up and just sit for a second or two.
Sure enough, diagnosis “grossly enlarged heart”.
His wife worked at one of the major hospital s in the area, and hooked him up with a heart specialist, who hung a monitor on him for a long week end. The following Monday he relates all this to me during lunch.
Phone rings and it is his wife. Now where she made her big mistake was having him on the speaker phone in her office, while she read out the results of the 72 hour test.
His heart rate had thumped along all week end between 38 and 44 bpm, EXCEPT for an hour and 15 minutes Sunday afternoon when it raced to 60-65 and held steady .
Her question was “What were doing from 3:15 until 4:30 Sunday afternoon. Now bear in mind , he had her on the speaker in our little lunch area. He tried to play dumb ,but she was having none of it. Finally, he called her by both her given names followed by ‘WE WERE HAVING SEX!”
I immediately fell to the floor and bowed to the KING, while the doctor could could be heard shouting,

This is not even considering anything of the past with his former girlfriend. He’s paid for whatever part of it was on him. And don’t imagine that the “Bigs” did not bring more pressure to bear in that case that she herself ever wanted. Had it been one of their favored ones, they’d have made it all go away. Just as they would the bidness with the shady preacherman.
He got on the “outs” with the “Bigs” a few years when he seriously challenged them, first about the ill-conceived helmet law, and then when he became the front-runner, ahead of their chosen guy Tom Rice, for the GOP nomination for SC 7. They set out to slap him down, any way they could. They did the same with others as well who had challenged them. Do the research.
I’m mainly non-partisan, though I mostly vote GOP. I am not an idealogue. But I am a political pragmatist. Corruption pervades the system. Viers is far from being one of the deeply corrupt-to-the-core ones. I do want to see the ones who are in that category in jail. I believe, in time it will happen to at least some of them.

Myself, I get sick of these roaches who think they are better than the rest of us, and apparently the legal system agrees, as they do any and every corrupt thing they wish with little or no repercussions. I know one guy who actually had a chance encounter with Viers and his description of events demonstrated the hubris Viers had when in the Legislature, as well as his utter contempt for lesser beings who did not occupy such a lofty station in life.
Then we have that infamous “Viers Amendment”, that was added to a good piece of pro-2A legislation some years ago, to effectively torpedo the bill. Viers’ amendment would have (quite needlessly) removed the current law which allows anyone who can legally possess a handgun, to carry it loaded in a closed glove box or like compartment. It would have changed the law so that only persons possessing a CWP from a state that is recognized in SC, could do so. This killed (as intended) all support for the bill by pro-gun groups and legislators. I cannot prove it, but the tactic had “Mike Pitts” written all over it, even though Viers gladly affixed his name to it while sanctimoniously declaring his “support” of gun rights and how he was a proud gun owner.
Myself, I hope he gets quite a few years to re-think his conduct in the world.

Viers’ federal charges — all but one were dismissed as a result of his agreeing to plead Guilty to that one charge — were the result of his actions as an attorney.
Shouldn’t attorneys, while practicing their profession, be held to a higher standard?
I remember attending a hearing where Viers was protesting the establishment of half-way house. When he was was questioned by an attorney for the applicant, I felt that Viers’ answers were deliberately vauge, and possibly deceptive.
I remember that, and I also remember Viers saying of the judge “They forget that in this state I get to vote on the judges.”
The judge, to his great credit, ruled against Viers anyway.

The probe may have been shut down, for good. Or it may not have been. At this point, there is no way of knowing. They are not going to give us signals about it. Just because they got it shut down does not mean there was never anything to it.
In Florida, there is a whistle-blower/watchdog network that has been able to get maybe 75 or so wrong-doers out of office over the past decade. A dozen or so have done time. Here, the system is too tight, and it is very much about collusion between state and federal agencies, who do all they can to squash anyone who speaks out against the system.
In FL, most of those perps have been Dems. Here, they are likely to be mostly Repub. But it makes no difference. The worst of them need jail time. The ones who are not quite so deep in it need to rat out every one of them, ASAP.
