That is not exactly what happened. Many Republicans voted against it as a procedural vote, so it will be up for debate in a few months, after three committee investigations with hearings, etc. are in full swing or complete, plus the release of possibly dozens more hours of video, making it harder for Dems to defend this slaughterhouse. Obama will veto it anyway, but if they can override his veto, then this no vote will be well worth it to ensure passage later. They did manage to get ACORN shut down, but no one is trying to shut down PP, just stop giving them federal funding. The republican plan will take the money PP gets and give it to legitimate providers of womens health care, in clinics that far outnumber PPs. If PP has so many supporters, let them remain a ‘non-profit’ and they can support it, privately.

All you’d have to do is look for ICD-9 code 69.01, 69.02 and 69.09 that’ll tell you why the D&C was done.

Zero, the numbers are something like 1 in 1,800-10,000 depending on whose report you believe.
How many were DNCs conducted at the time of a mis-carriage. We probably don’t know that answer either.
In the pre abortion on demand days, many a procedure coded as a D&C was actually an elective abortion. I think at this point we’ve gotten past that so it might be a useful study.
I just know that if you begin to have a miscarriage – and you go to the hospital, and the doctors determine it’s a lost cause, they perform a D&C. So I’d just think we’d want to know, if the hospital performed 58, and all were assocaited with a miscarriage, then they didn’t perform actual “abortions” as the right would define one.
ICD-9 codes will tell you what was fine and why.
I think I’ve heard the rate is about 2-3% of all abortions fall under the “life of the mother” category. MUSC accounted for slightly more than 1% of all SC abortions. I’m willing to bet the hospital will argue they were all done because of medical complications (probably not all for the mother’s life).
I don’t pretend to know a lot about this subject, but I think we need more info to paint a better picture. We need a breakdown on the justifications for these 58 abortions. But it’s also important to get the total among all state hospitals to see if they all do it or if many refer medical cases to MUSC.
I’ve seen numbers between 1.3% and 15% but after reading the reports, 2-3% seems to be the real number.
MUSC get’s a bunch of the worst of the worst cases from around the state and even some out of state. I can see there rates being higher than normal. Maybe all 58 were “medically necessary”, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. 58 works out to one every 6 to 7 days which isn’t a huge number considering the types of cases MUSC handles. I’m with The Colonel the ICD-9 / ICD-10 (Is MUSC ICD-10 yet?) codes would tell us much more.

I know a doctor from “a non-profit upstate rural hospital” (if i can’t prove it is it slander?) said we needed to consider termination of our daughter because of her short leg would mean down syndrome.
