Don’t believe us? Check out this frightening interactive map showing the deterioration of the American middle class from 2000-2013 – a.k.a. the era of big government “bipartisanship.”
Using data compiled by Stateline, the map shows that “in all 50 states, the percentage of ‘middle-class’ households – those making between 67 percent and 200 percent of the state’s median income – shrunk between 2000 and 2013.”
That’s right: The middle class shrunk in every single state.
Not only that, it shrunk even as inflation-adjusted median incomes were shrinking … meaning it shrunk while the bar for middle class participation was constantly being lowered.
In our home state of South Carolina, the middle class shrank from 50 percent of households in 2000 to 45.8 percent in 2013 – a 4.2 percent decline. During that time inflation-adjusted income declined from $51,099 to $44,163 – a 13.6 percent decline.
And as South Carolina’s middle class falls further behind America’s middle class – America’s middle class falls further behind the rest of the world.

Hey, I see they have a mistrial due to a hung jury in the Officer Kerrick trial in Charlotte. Not what I hoped for but better than “guilty”. I’ve always heard that subsequent trials following a mistrial are harder for prosecution and easier for defense.

The answer to the deterioration in the ranks of the middle class can be summed up in three words, “trickle down economics.” But the losses were exacerbated by the Bush depression. Scott Walker and John Kasich have to be hating this report. Despite their bold assertions of economic growth; the ranks of the middle class in Wisconsin and Ohio, shrank the most. That is because all of their efforts were targeted at benefiting the wealthy. The did not do anything for the average citizens in their states.
Which is exactly what most Republican candidates have in store for the entire country. Double down on trickle down, until there is no middle class. I guess when there is nothing but poor people and rich people, The Kochs and the other Oligarchs, can run the country any way they want.
Numbers can be deceiving.
If the middle class is shrinking, shouldn’t we ask where they went? How many became upper class and how many became poor? If you squeeze the middle of a balloon, the air must go somewhere to remain 100%.
This is household income. What if households are smaller now? Does a separated couple count as two households. Also there are more empty nesters and retirees.
If there are more retirees, aren’t they relying more on savings than income?
For retirees, do these income numbers include all “income”, including Social Security, 401k, IRA, etc….

The middle class is shifting to lower class. i.e. poor. The average income of the whole is moving down on an inflation adjusted basis, while the average income of the wealthy experiences a dramatic uptick on an inflation adjusted basis. That means that for the vast majority of Americans the middle class lifestyle they hoped to lead is slipping away. They are living their life paycheck to paycheck, unable to pay for the education of their kids, save for retirement and buy a decent home. They are constantly on the edge of disaster. While the wealthy experience unprecedented wealth. Wealth disparity is now a levels not seen since the days of the industrial revolution.
