|| By FITSNEWS || Local attorney and “Republican” executive committeeman Russell Fry defeated Horry County councilman Tyler Servant in a special election GOP runoff this week along the South Carolina coast.
According to unofficial returns provided by the S.C. Election Commission, Fry received 1,736 votes (59.8 percent) compared to Servant’s 1,166 votes (40.2 percent). With no Democrats filing for the seat, Fry is a virtual lock to become the next S.C. Representative for House District 106 when a special general election is held next month.
Fry and Servant were vying for the seat formerly held by fiscally liberal “Republican” Nelson Hardwick, who was forced to resign in May amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment.
We did not get involved in this race … believing neither candidate was worth supporting.
Fry – like most “Republicans” at the S.C. State House – has vowed to be a “positive force for conservative reform in Columbia that provides opportunities for the next generation.”
We look forward to holding him to that promise …
If elected on September 15 as expected, Fry would serve out the remainder of Hardwick’s term. He would then stand for reelection in 2016.

This is a defeat for Confederate flag supporters.
It’s absurd that it ever became an issue at all in that campaign — and that absurdity was entirely the fault of Kahaley and Quinn. Well, and Tyler Servant’s daddy, for allowing them to do that to his wet-behind-the-ears fair-haired boy.

Times change. So do people. Even political operatives. Walter Whetsel has changed, and for the better. These are words to which I never would have thought I’d give voice or type out, just a few years ago. But truth is truth. He is now capable of running a winning campaign without resorting to lies, distortion and deception. Russell’s substantial victory, of course, was due to to abundant positive qualities of his own. But in addition, the campaign was brilliantly waged — and done so with an even hand. Good work, all the way.
