“IT’S A GREAT DAY IN SOUTH CAROLINA”

|| By FITSNEWS || So this is probably beating a dead horse, but another report is out this week highlighting the Palmetto State’s abysmal K-12 academic achievement.

This time the data comes from the personal finance website WalletHub.com, which used thirteen different metrics in an effort to determine overall rankings for all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

How’d South Carolina stack up?

Here are some of the rankings …

28th – Percentage of High School Graduates Who Completed the ACT
41st – Math Test Score
43rd – Reading Test Score
32nd – Pupil-Teacher Ratio
35th – Dropout Rate
18th – School Safety
46th – Average SAT Score

Add it all up, and South Carolina ranks No. 45 overall …

Education has been a forgotten issue in the Palmetto State this year.  State lawmakers paid it short shrift during the recently concluded legislative session – throwing gobs of additional tax dollars at the failed government-run system, but only modestly expanding the state’s special needs parental choice program.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Throwing larger sums of money at a failed government-run system while refusing to enact market-based reforms is a recipe for continued failure.

Lawmakers might as well be setting your money on fire …

Call him mentally challenged and pay him over the table, it might be tax deductible. The IRS will buy the mentally challenged bit for sure.

Liberals failing our children July 30, 2015 at 4:36 pm

While there are VERY specific reasons for any, and all, bad education outcomes in SC, and/or any other state; I give NO Credence to data produced FOR LIBERALS BY LIBERALS (FLBL.) It is more and more based on the effort to incriminate states that don’t vote for your trashy and failed Democrat idols.

Aside from that, if you same leftwing NAZIs would Demand FATHERS and MOTHERS take responsibility for your spawn, with the same level of hate that you accused a flag of killing 9 Christians, it may help a child.

As it is: you sit on your pious and lazy asses, crying racism, while treating your children worse than the white man would treat his dog.

You abuse, use and and damn our kids in order to feed your liberal Greed and empower the gods that plunder us as a nation.

Then you are surprised, and incredulous, at the manifestation of the filth you so tightly and wantonly grasp on a daily basis.

I guess Will did not take the time to actually look at the data. Mass rated #1 and according to their data that spend a whole lot more than we do on schools per pupil.

http://www.boston.com/yourtown/specials/snapshot/massachusetts_snapshot_pupil_costs_2011_2012/

The #1 district in Mass spent $33,811 per student, or 3x what we spend. More money may not be the whole answer, but it would certainly be part of it.

Not So Simple July 30, 2015 at 7:21 pm

My kid went to SC public schools in an inner-city minority dominated district and minority dominated high school. The earned national merit scholarship standing got a full academic scholarship at a state research university. Thanks for all your tax money. We appreciate it. So do the parents of a bunch of other winners at that school and others like it. No griping. It was all performance awarded.

sic(k) willie is such a paid “voucher pimp” for Howie the Voucher Clown.

But, even Howie the Voucher Clown knows vouchers are dead in S.C.

Fix the real problems, sic(k) willie. You and Howie know what they are.

Fix the poverty (get Trickkie Nikkie to help).

Fix the “Corridor of Shame” funding issues.
Fix the host of social issues facing those in poverty.

Howie the Voucher Clown and sic(k) willie propose to “rob from the poor” to fund private schools with our tax money. What a voucher scam.

The voucher scam (regardless of what Howie’s Voucher Pimps call it) would only hurt those who need help the most. You know, “rob from the poor.”

It’s really a great day in S.C. now that the voucher scam is dead in S.C.

The first and last metrics listed are meaningless.

The ACT is just another version of the SAT. Historically, East Coast states use the SAT and the ACT is more West coast prevalent.

In SC any student can take the SAT. We are one of very few states that do that and might actually be the only one. In Mississippi you have to be in the top of your class to take it. Ergo, it is not an Apples to Apples comparison.

“Market-Based solutions” Slogans, slogans; never any solutions. What a jerk off approach to lots of major problems. If and when it ever gets specific, in the end it distills down to the shady, dirty crony capitalism that Will claims to deplore. Except that he doesn’t come payday.

Another interesting figure is the state’s ranking as the 6th worst for the percentage of school funding used for classroom instruction. Less than $0.50 of every dollar goes to actually educating children. The state has a grossly inefficient system of administration with 85 school districts with duplicated “head offices” and staffing. Then there is the poor oversight and control of capital investment in new schools and facilities contributing to heavy debt burdens with bond repayment and interest expense. Capital investment and debt service has risen from 9% in 1995 to 20% in 2012 of the average district’s budget. It is astounding to have only seen a less than 7% increase in the student population since 1995 but an almost 4 fold increase in the cost per student!! SC is throwing money down a hole benefiting administrators, contractors, suppliers and opportunistic “education professionals” while blaming children for not meeting expectations. SC is not suffering from a shortage of resources or talent but from a system of local and state government that is ineffective and inefficient. It is the same root cause for EVERY problem facing this state. A parasitic government benefiting a corrupt and incompetent political leadership.
