DEMOCRATIC FRONTRUNNER: GRACE “DOES NOT COME FROM ABOVE”

|| By FITSNEWS || Remember U.S. president Barack Obama‘s “you didn’t build that” gaffe?  Well, presumed 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton may have just offered up one to top that.

During a visit to early-voting South Carolina, the scandal-scarred former Secretary of State paid a visit to West Columbia’s Brookland Baptist Church.  In addressing the Palmetto State’s response to last month’s horrific, racially motivated “Holy City Massacre,” Clinton praised the grace that’s been shown in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“That did not come from above,” Clinton said.  “That came from people and communities, rising up and speaking out.”

Wait … what?

Grace doesn’t come from above?

Whoa …

We don’t claim to be Biblical scholars around here.  Nor do we thump our Bibles at other people (we’re libertarians). Having said that, we’re pretty sure Clinton just told every evangelical voter in South Carolina (and beyond) that their faith in God is meaningless.

Grace doesn’t come from above?

Obviously it’s not as dangerous saying something like that in a Democratic primary election, but still … is that really the view of black churches in South Carolina?  Seriously, is that the sort of doctrinal statement that slain Mother Emanuel AME pastor Clementa Pinckney – a Clinton supporter – would have endorsed?

Just curious … because the last time we checked all Christian doctrines held that grace from above was the only way a person could be saved by faith.

Look, we get that it’s no longer cool to be Christian in America.  And for the record, this website has never sought to impose its Christian roots on anyone else (again, we’re libertarians).  If anything, we’ve angered the religious right with our progressive views on certain hot button social issues.

But to strip away the authorship of grace from whatever your conception of a higher power is … well, that’s just blasphemy.  In fact it’s almost as disgusting as the original secular humanist response to the Charleston shooting.

Clearly human beings are capable of grace, and its extension by the families of the Mother Emanuel victims to the white supremacist murderer Dylann Storm Roof is perhaps the most compelling example of grace any of us will see in our lives.  But Clinton’s attempt to appropriate the authorship of that grace to human beings – to “people and communities, rising up and speaking out” – is simply anti-Christian.

And while we’d never vote for or against a candidate on the basis of their specific religious beliefs, many do … and many will no doubt recoil at Clinton’s suggestion that their faith is rooted in a lie.

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues

Hah! You once told me not to “feed” that very same troll.

I believe you are a person of faith. So am I. It suits the agenda and narrative of assholes like pogo and GT to assert otherwise, though.

On Hillary, much as I do despise her — and much as I agree that her take on “grace” is well off the mark — it’s a bit more complicated, as far as whether or not she is truly “Godless.” As I posted elsewhere:

I agree that Hillary is an opportunist, can’t be trusted, and that she is a generally terrible person. Also, I would add that Bill is a rapist. But is Hillary truly without faith? I don’t know.

From Mother Jones (with the same info available from other sources)

/// Through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as the Fellowship. Her collaborations with right-wingers such as Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) grow in part from that connection. “A lot of evangelicals would see that as just cynical exploitation,” says the Reverend Rob Schenck, a former leader of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who now ministers to decision makers in Washington. “I don’t….there is a real good that is infected in people when they are around Jesus talk, and open Bibles, and prayer.” /// http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2007/09/hillarys-prayer-hillary-clintons-religion-and-politics

The democratic party oppressed blacks with chains during slavery. They oppressed them with Jim Crowe laws during reconstruction. When blacks stood up for themselves in the civil rights era the democrats pointed an undeserving finger at republicans and convinced blacks that the democrats would save them. Now we are in the me generation and democrats are telling blacks that it is all about them while they set the stage for a race war.

Unsubstantiated rhetoric. That is the undeserving damage that I was referring to.

The Buzzman July 25, 2015 at 5:31 pm

How is it unsubstantiated rhetoric to say that Southern Dems became Southern Republicans? It is the very basis of the current hegemony of the GOP in the Deep South. It is as much a historical reality is the fact that Hillary herself was once a Republican (albeit a Yankee one at that time) who belonged to the Young Republicans group in college.

Draw different conclusions from history, but stop pretending parts of it do not happen at all.

Speak D Truth July 25, 2015 at 5:48 pm

The Republican Party never adopted the racist policies of the democratic Party. The Democratic has and always will be the party of slavery, secession, racism, Jim Crowe, BenTillman, segregation, KKK, oppression, and racial division. The history of the democratic Party is similar to that of the Nazi Party. Both are based on racial/cultural superiority. The Democrats just do a better job of hiding it. The Democrats may have become less racist in the sixties but it does not mean that the Republican’s became more so.

The Buzzman July 25, 2015 at 7:53 pm

The racist Republicans BECAME the racist Democrats. I’m sure you know that, but you’re being obtuse, as usual. They became “Dixiecrats” first, but Strom lost his bid to be POTUS under that party banner. So, like him, over the next decade or so, they all became Democrats. THAT is how the GOP won the South. Playing on racism and fear of losing white supremacy was what the “Southern Strategy” was all about. That was the mission of Lee Atwater’s entire political life, from a certain point on until he had succeeded, wildly. Stop trying to re-write history.

Speak D Truth July 25, 2015 at 8:36 pm

Your words- Not Mine:

The Buzzman 37 minutes ago

“The racist Republicans BECAME the racist Democrats….”
Show me where the Republicans have a racist background or voting record that compares to the atrocities of the democratic party. Look at Strom’s voting record as a Republican compared to a Democrat. Read statements made about him after he died. Statements made by democrats and minorities. it is documented that the Republicans wanted to get rid of David Duke. I could find nothing that said the Democratic Party ever made an attempt.

The Buzzman July 25, 2015 at 8:56 pm

Obviously, I got it backwards. Correcting that now.

I’m not speaking of individual voting records, because it would be exhaustive to go back into all that. I’m talking about an entire movement at a certain point in history, where a great number of Democrats in the South became Republicans. It is exactly what LBJ predicted was going to happen, due to the Civil Rights Act. Again, an historical event, or series of events, which you constantly overlook. Intentionally.

As for David Duke, I was not aware that he was ever a Democrat. But if he was, it proves my point. A racist Democrat in the South became a racist Republican. Good for the GOP that they got rid of him. But it was likely because he was so damned overt in his racism, and about being connected to the KKK.

Speak D Truth July 25, 2015 at 9:29 pm

Even if that happened, You cannot show where the racism of the Democratic Party transferred to the Republican Party. The legacy of racism belongs to the Democratic Party. I can find nowhere that the republican Party has ever endorsed racism to the degree of the Democratic Party. If this “switch” truly occurred the way Democrats claim then the overt racism that permeated the Democratic Party would have overcome the Republican Party and they would now have the same racist voting history that Democrats have. That is not the case.

The Buzzman July 26, 2015 at 1:06 am

“Even if that happened …” You can make book on it.

Both parties have “played the race” card in different ways over the years. Most recently (if we don’t count some of the more insane rebel flag fetishist’s words and actions, the restrictive voting laws pushed and passed by the GOP majorities in several states are a throwback to the Jim Crow years — because they are specifically designed to keep more blacks from voting than anyone else.

This ends my bantering on this with you pogo. You know your position is bullshit, if you have half a brain. And I think you do.

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 8:06 am

There was some party switching but not to the extent that Democrats like to claim. There wasn’t enough of it to make the Republicans ooze with racism like they Democrats.
The very fact that you try to compare Voter ID to Jim Crowe is an example of the democratic Party’s attempt to minimize the perception of their racist past.
We already require people to register to vote. You used to be required to have your voter registration card with you when you voted. Now you can show your drivers license or other picture ID. What is wrong with trying to minimize voter fraud by requiring people to have an ID? In SC we were going to issue free ID’s to people so they could vote. What percentage of people today don’t have an ID? Democrats only opposed this law because it prevented people from voting for a relative that didn’t want to vote and because it prevented dead people from voting.

Rakkasan July 26, 2015 at 3:54 pm

Stop with the red herrings. Someone brings up Voter ID and you counter with party history. There is no voter fraud problem, that’s the problem with more requirements to vote. It’s a bullshit cover for an attempt to discourage voters who typically vote D. Out.

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 4:01 pm

The fact that you ignore 110% turnouts in some precincts. Admissions by some democrats to voting multiple times and other things then you cannot participate in a legitimate debate of the need for voter ID.

I got your answer: none. Or “I heard”

Rakkasan July 26, 2015 at 8:05 am

Show you? How about ‘in the beginning” when Nixon shaped his Southern Strategy which was and is a totally planned, conscious, and willful strategy to oppose a Civil Rights Act in order to gain Southern votes. He noted at the time that this strategy would gain more votes than they would lose if they would support a Civil Rights Act. A true strategy of realpolitik. And then there’s George Wallace who lost a couple of elections due to be too moderate on racial issues. Afterwards, he swore he would never be “outniggered again” and became the racist politician we are most familiar with.

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 9:05 am

And there wasn’t enough support to defeat the legislation or to elect Wallace. Changing parties did not make the Republican Party the racist party that the democrats were. Neither of these events compare to the atrocities committed by the Democratic Party. If the Republicans suddenly became racist after years of supporting minority rights then there should be a record of a mass exodus of there Republicans to the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party only started to support the Civil Rights Act as a means to end the riots. LBJ was forced to meet with MLK. LBJ was a horrible racist and only endorsed the act as a means to save his party. It was a purchasing of the black vote, a vote that Democrats tried for years to deny to black citizens. It was never about what was morally right, it was about survival.

Seems he did pretty well with those gubernatorial elections though. We’re adult enough to realize politicians do and say things that are not motivated by their beliefs and core values. No news there. But in that context, I’m more interested in whether they do the right thing–or not., as opposed to a party that consistently campaigns on one set of issues but then governs on another

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 10:15 am

Kinda like LBJ pushing through a Civil Rights Bill that he did not believe in to gain the votes of a race of people that he despised? No core values. The true values of leading Democrats are shown throughout the Civil Rights Era and through today. They are the true racists but they hide it because they need the black vote to help them stay in power and remain relevant.

Rakkasan July 26, 2015 at 11:35 am

Given a choice, I would rather have someone do the right thing for the wrong reason than the wrong thing for the right reason. Say for example refusing to adopt and deliver effective pregnancy and disease prevention education to teenagers because their faith, ideology, or “culture” is opposed to it.

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 11:51 am

Can you define “effective pregnancy and disease prevention education “? What we have right now isn’t working and there is a huge problem with the democrat supported Planned Parenthood.

Rakkasan July 26, 2015 at 12:44 pm

I’m sure you can offer a lay definition of of such services sufficient for the discussion. We should also attempt pilot projects on providing contraceptives to teens and young adults, as have been found to be impressively successful in a couple of states. Again, trying and doing things to solve the problem vs. turning a blind eye and using our “vales”, faith, or ideology as cover. And, what do you see as the “huge problem” with Planned Parenthood

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 12:49 pm

You haven’t watched the news about the videos exposing them for selling body parts? You aren’t aware that their founder is an unapologetic racist?

Rakkasan July 26, 2015 at 2:17 pm

Yes, I’ve seen the politicized, edited half-truths. This is a set-up in order to run this issue (abortion and stopping funding for PP) into the election cycle. Repub. have been attacking PP for years. PP claimed they were not making any profit of this, and this will be investigated. That is good. Meanwhile, it appears also the company behind the videos may have been illegally established in a fraudulent way, and they may have violated the Invasion of Privacy Act. I know for the people who think that murder is justified for doctors who perform abortions, but we are still a nation of laws. BTW, are you an organ donor? Do you think the facilities that remove the organs to be donated do it for free?

Speak D Truth July 26, 2015 at 2:55 pm

I agree that the issue will be investigated but the question is whether or not it will be thoroughly and fairly investigated. The lady on the video quotes a price. A price that should cover the expenses of the procedure but the jumps at a price that is more than that. A price that would generate a profit. She becomes coy when asked about making a profit but never dismisses the idea.
Given that these videos were made in a public place they should not violate right to privacy laws. This is no different than you using your phone to record people walking down the street or a surveillance camera recording you in a alley. For that matter, It is no different than a body camera worn by a cop.
I do think that you have proven an important point. So far you have ignored the racism of the Democratic Party prior to the Civil Rights act of 64. you have taken an end justifies the means attitude to dismiss the racism of LBJ and the real reasons that he pushed the Act of 64 through. You will not acknowledge the many racist remarks made by Democrats since then.
You claim that all of the racist Democrats became Republicans despite the many quotes to the contrary. KKK supporter Margaret Sanger never changed parties. She called for the annihilation of the black race. She supported abortion and could have seen PP as a legal way to begin that extermination. Sanger is worshipped by Hillary Clinton. If Margaret Sanger and Ben Tillman had created a child together it would have been to Anti-Christ.
So the point that you have proven is this: ” Racism is not the problem that is portrayed to be. It this the politicization of racism that is the cause of discontent in America.” Democrats are the party that politicizes racism. Racism needs to end. Democrats need it to survive.
Prior to the end of the Civil War the democrats used Slavery to enslave blacks.
From then until the Civil Rights era they used Jim Crowe Laws to control their actions.
Since the Civil War Era they have used the race card and a dose of social action to control their voting habits.
Margaret Sanger suggested using black preachers to control them. Today we have Wright, Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan, and others being used to control the masses. That alone ties today’s Democratic party to their racist roots.

Rakkasan July 26, 2015 at 3:48 pm

Wow. I all the excitement I think you forgot whether you fired 5 shots or 6. You have attributed statements to me that I have not made (looks more like Buzzman’s comments). I do not deny racism in the Dem Party prior to the Civil Rights Act. I DID ask you for examples of what you were describing as racist in that context. But, discussions about the D’s and R’s histories have only limited value at this juncture. I’m focusing on the post-Civil Rights R’s and D’s– that’s going back over 50 years. And I’m focusing on the track record as it connects to the current political situation. Democrats need racism to survive? Puleese. Repubs have been the masters and commanders of dog whistle politics for decades. Who gave us Willie Horton? Who gave us “welfare queens driving Cadillacs and young bucks buying steaks with welfare money”? Who announced his presidential candidacy at the site of the murder of 3 civil rights workers in 1964 and talked about “states’ rights”? No dog whistle to Southern whites there, I’m sure. And Margaret Sanger? I gives a damn. Relevance, your honor.

“We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”

You probably don’t remember the “Communists, Socialists and Marxists For Obama” blog on the official Obama campaign website back in ’09. It was there for about a month before they scrubbed it from the site. It had been done by an associate of Obama and Ayers from their days in Chicago politics, who had been put in charge of creating blogs for the site. He was old-school Chicago leftist coalition all the way, and did not see why it was such a big deal. Under the bus he went, with all the other inconvenient allies.

^^^ Just submitted for some perspective. Not to counter what you say about these obsessed right wing nutjobs on here. In many ways, what they want to do to this nation is worse that communism. But your totally buying in to the current line that there are no hard left leanings in the Dem party is simply sad.

Maybe what she meant is that the “Grace” came from the greatness of the democratic community that exists inside that community and the “evil” came from the evil republicans. She can’t give God any credit because as a democrat and a member of the government she would have to consider that a separation of church and state.

“That did not come from above,” Clinton said.  “That came from people and communities, rising up and speaking out.”
————————————————————————————————–
I’m not sure if fits interpretation of Hillary’s statement is accurate. “Above” in her quote obviously does not mean a direction. Anyone brought up in the Southern evangelical milieu would translate ‘above’ as a “higher” power. But there is another interpretation. She may have meant a higher human power. This could be Black leadership, the government or other leaders.
That she would purposely ‘diss’ God seems unlikely. It still indicates a disconnect with voters

Hillary more than any other candidate has to have advisors shape her image and tell the voters who she is. Every few months we are told by her campaign and the press that we are going to see the real Hillary revealed. As long as she has been a public figure, this would only be necessary if the real Hillary was not good enough.

Reply

Not that she was that cogent to begin with, but the rumors of her having had some type brain damaging event are beginning to look plausible. I don’t think she knows what she was saying, so analyzing her every word is kind of a waste of time. In the 90’s the Clintons were horrific people, but the Republicans went over the top with exaggeration when reality would have sufficed. I think this over reach resulted in a “Lifetime Get Out Of Jail Free card” for them and now when they are doing all these terrible outrages it just looks like a “Vast right Wing Conspiracy”. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

I’m often amazed at how scientifically accurate old religious hymns are.
Example: The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;

Soon is accurate when compared to eternity. The sun will expand to egulf the Earth before dieing.

Yeah and there is something about seven in Revelations. I love to hear people try to interpret that. I’ve heard so many stories about the planets lining up, signifying the end of the world. Some seven headed something that is sure to devour us. I’ve live through so many prophetic events that were the end of the world. I’ve just decided the world as we know it ends —it is not unexpected, someone is sure to get the time right.

She needs to go back to the days of telling her supporters who to talk to. Every time she opens her mouth about her mail server she contradicts herself. Roping off the press served her well because she is not good on her feet. She has the Clinton foundation looming in the background with many unanswered questions. How this woman is going to make through the next sixteen months out in the public is beyond me.
The woman needs to retire into seclusion, because being out interfacing with the public is not her strong suit.

We need Bill back to take advantage of interns, develop more connections with his pedophile, sex fiend friends and constant immoral activities.

More sell outs to the Russians and Iranians for contributions to their personal accounts, more OUTRAGEOUS speaking fees and commodities and equities deals.

The same prayer group/fundamentalist Christian Libertarian cabal that produced Billy Graham, Rick Warren, Mark Sanford and John Ensign, too.
Their basic ‘theology’ is that they are anointed by God to lead like the adulterous King David and never have to pay a price because they are special. The Coes, the preacher/con men in charge, appear to have missed the part about Absalom.

What she is simply saying is that grace is a gift from God, that unacted upon, has no value. The “That” of which you reference is simply people embracing that grace. “That” indeed “did not come from above.” It came from “people and communities” consciously making the decision to embrace the gift of grace. They could have rejected it.
