I don’t believe Tillman Hall was named after Tillman in recognition of any acts or representations made by him with respect to the “Confederacy.” Therefore, the issue of renaming it seems outside the scope of the Heritage Act.
Perhaps the monument or a plaque on the building says otherwise with regard to why his name is on the building.
SECTION 10-1-165. Protection of certain monuments and memorials.
(A) No Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, War Between the States, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Native American, or African-American History monuments or memorials erected on public property of the State or any of its political subdivisions may be relocated, removed, disturbed, or altered.
No street, bridge, structure, park, preserve, reserve, or other public area of the State or any of its political subdivisions dedicated in memory of or named for any historic figure or historic event may be renamed or rededicated. No person may prevent the public body responsible for the monument or memorial from taking proper measures and exercising proper means for the protection, preservation, and care of these monuments, memorials, or nameplates.
(B) The provisions of this section may only be amended or repealed upon passage of an act which has received a two-thirds vote on the third reading of the bill in each branch of the General Assembly.

As a former Governor and US Senator, the building named for Tillman at Clemson is clearly covered by the Act. However, I think the Act is unconstitutional and ripe for challenge.

Isn’t the whole “heritage age” contrary to the state constitution since it requires a 2/3 vote? Someone needs to just bring a lawsuit and have the whole law declared void. Surely now they’d never pass a new compliant version of such foolishness again if the original was struck down.

clemson should change it and dare the Legislature to challenge them on it. It’s not like the general assembly is going to send the Sergeant at Arms up there to attach a plaque reading “Tillman Hall,” and it’s not like the GA would be able to criminally charge anyone for violating this “law.”
Superfly: The Heritage Act is unconstitional and a lawsuit has already been filed by members of Greenwood American Legion Post 20. This is a state lawsuit and if the state has it blocked, a federal lawsuit alleging a first amendment violation will be filed and I assure you that the state cannot pull any monkey business here. You can google this matter to see what the lawsuit covers but the state is behind the eight ball.
Everybody knows that action on the battle flag had no momentum until Governor Haley spoke out on the issue. But Haley didn’t speak out until after fitsnews changed it’s possition on the issue.
In light of these facts, and that there are no statues erected or buildings named in recognition of any women elected figures, fitsnews should suggest replacement of the Tillman statue with a much more attractive statue of a female elected official and renaming Clemson’s most recognized building after the most electorially successful woman graduate, l’m sure our governor will courageously speak out in support.

Here’s a thought, how about an interpretive center in Tillman Hall where Tillman can be examined for all his good and bad in detail. Obviously he was a heinous racist but contrary to Will’s sensationalism, there is no evidence that he personally committed any murders. He was an important figure in the establishment of Clemson and Winthrop. He did great things for farmers. He was not a member of the klan (they wouldn’t have him), he was a Red-Shirt, a far better organized, more powerful and vile organization. Show the man for all his warts, we must remember the past in all its ugliness or we are doomed to repeat it.
All governments, institution, parks, and public places caught up in this mania of name-changing should should just make a public statement that any consideration and resolution for name-changing shall be deferred for a period of at least twelve months while the situation is being investigated and considered. Will, The reason they can not go private is because they could NEVER raise enough money to buy the land from the state or the buildings. That is why the citadel never went private bc it would of cost them around a billion dollars to buy it from the state.
