Some additional info: the FBI background check examiner who evaluated Roof’s request to buy a gun never saw the arrest report because the wrong arresting agency that was listed on the list rap sheet that she reviewed.
That does not sound like an FBI screw-up, if the agent could not confirm the rap sheet because someone in Columbia screwed up.

No, one ended up in the Lexington Solicitor’s Office (drug charge), and one ended up in CITY court (the trespassing, I believe they said it was).

Nope, it was the computer system on the FBI end, that has been established (all the way down to the error itself). He was booked into the Lexington County jail (since the offense happened in Lexington county). The feds called Lexington County, and were told “Columbia”. The agent looked it up by county (ORI prefix SC032) and got WEST Columbia as the ONLY Columbia in that county. Columbia’s ORI prefix is SC040 (Richland county). Understandable mistake, and a COMPUTER DB failure.

Wow! It is scary to imagine that they haven’t figured out a way to reconcile municipal ORI’s that are split among two or more counties in this day and time. I am sure this happens all over the country (Atlanta, for instance). Thanks for the update and clarification.

The AP article states further that even though the Lexington County jail corrected the paperwork error in two days, the correction was not forwarded to SLED, which maintains the database the FBI was checking.

The system did mess up. That’s why it needs tightening up. Our lack of gun controls needs to be addressed. Too many people on anti-depressants possess guns. That needs to change.
One problem…. it has been almost impossible to obtain information on those who have been committed or adjudicated mentally incompetent. Further, families tend to avoid treatment to keep family members from BEING committed or adjudicated (embarrassment). As to antidepressants, too many doctors prescribe them when they shouldn’t… we’re turning into a medicated society. When I was a substitute teacher, I was APPALLED at the number of kids that were on drugs, mostly because the traditional ways of dealing with misbehaving youth were verboten.
The only drug I know he was on is Suboxone which is used for opiate withdrawals, and he’d quit taking them.The fact that he stayed at the church for over an hour,points to an acute psychotic episode.Mass murderers are usually mentally ill.It’s too bad the reaction was taking down the flag instead of reopening the state hospital.

There are some people that fear that the momentum gained over the last few week will metastasize into further actions. The error was on the part of SC Law enforcement administrators – Not The FBI. Obama’s comments were on in SC laws entitling Concealed Cary gun owners to enter the House of the Lord armed to settle grievances . The same Stand Your Ground/ Canceled Carry law entitles them to enter your home to settle their grievances with you and concealed weapons will give them the element of surprise. SC Sheriff’s won’t enforce SC’s current liberal gun laws so they will receive NRA Enforcement. Canceled Carry is in direct conflict with the 2nd Amendment/Castle doctrine & the two cannot co-exist. The next time the NRA asks you for money after a tragedy massacre think if that might be very cynical, and you might be burning both ends of the candle towards the middle. As a former NRA supporter I saw the light after Colorado Move massacre. I can’t except Sandy Hook as just a norm in protecting the 2nt amendment right. If laws exempt a certain group of people form killing unarmed people, they cannot be considered well regulated.
