CONTROVERSIAL BANNER WILL BE REMOVED BEFORE THE WEEKEND …

|| By FITSNEWS || By a 94-20 vote, the S.C. House of Representatives voted to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the S.C. State House this week.

After thirteen hours of contentious, emotional and at times exceedingly ignorant debate – the House voted to simply concur with the legislation that overwhelmingly passed the S.C. Senate earlier this week.

The deciding vote came three weeks after the “Holy City Massacre” – the horrific, racially motivated mass murder of nine black churchgoers at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C.  The Mother Emanuel victims – among them S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor – were gunned down during a Bible study by Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist who used the Confederate flag as his calling card.

We’ve written extensively in the aftermath of the shooting in support of removing the flag – and doing so expeditiously.  We’ve also provided some extensive historical context related to this debate (see here and here).

Both chambers of the legislature – under intense corporate pressure – did as we recommended.  But the House didn’t go without a fight.

Leading the obstructionism? S.C Reps. Mike Pitts – who prepared a barrage of amendments to the “clean” Senate bill – and S.C. Rep. Rick Quinn, whose father Richard Quinn runs a political consulting empire with deep neo-Confederate roots.

Pitts did not vote for or against final passage of the Senate bill.  Quinn voted for the bill – but not before attempting to insert an amendment that would have erected a taxpayer-funded shrine at the government-run Confederate Relic Room, where the flag will be shipped once it comes down.

RICK QUINN
RICK QUINN

Quinn’s language directs the Relic Room to “establish and maintain an appropriate, permanent, and public display honoring South Carolina soldiers killed during the Civil War to include the South Carolina Infantry Battle Flag of the Confederate States of America,” and that the flag “must be displayed alongside other distinguished military exhibits covering the Civil War.”

Ultimately lawmakers approved the language unanimously as a separate piece of legislation after Quinn’s effort to insert it into the flag bill itself was unsuccessful.  Had House members amended the legislation – as several of them sought to do – it would have forced another round of voting on the issue.

One lawmaker – S.C. Rep. Jenny Horne – was having none of that.  In fact Horne made an emotional appeal to her colleagues from the House floor at a key moment of the debate – urging them not to further delay the process.

“I cannot believe that we do not have the heart in this body to do something meaningful such as take a symbol of hate off these grounds on Friday,” Horne said from the well of the House, fighting back tears.  “And if any of you vote to amend, you are ensuring that this flag will fly beyond Friday.  For the widow of Sen. Pinckney and his two young daughters, that would be adding insult to injury and I will not be a part of it.”

Passing an unamended version of the bill means the measure goes straight to the desk of S.C. governor Nikki Haley – a former flag supporter who now believes the banner should be taken down.

Once Haley signs the bill, the flag will come down within twenty-four hours – i.e. before the weekend.

For those of you keeping score here’s the final vote …

Of interest?

Several powerful House leaders – including budget committee chairman Brian White, judiciary chairman Greg Delleney and influential whip Gary Simrill – voted against the bill.

Also voting against the flag’s removal?  S.C. Rep. Eric Bedingfield, aide-de-camp to U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney.

Another powerful committee chairman – labor, commerce and industry (LCI) committee leader Bill Sandifer – was not present for the final vote but cast several pro-flag procedural tallies.

(For more on the influential support for the flag within the House, click here).

Many House members were livid during the debate, saying they had been assured by GOP leadership – including House Speaker Jay Lucas and “majority” leader Bruce Bannister – that the legislation to remove the flag would go through the traditional committee process and not be “rammed through.”

It didn’t …

Leftist/socialist race hustlers win again.Nikki Haley should be ashamed.ANY talk of her having national political aspirations should be quashed ASP by Republican operatives and voters. She is NO conservative and turned her back on the people that elected her.

“What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state,” Haley said during a gubernatorial debate in October 2014. “I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.”

Funny what NOT being accountable to the voters AGAIN that elected her (DESPITE all of her lies and moral failings) will do to a politician.

MLK plagiarized his way to a doctoral degree, he fucked women in every city and lead by do as I say, not as I do… and the black folk view him as a saint. Let’s take down the MLK statues, rename the streets, schools and buildings because they’re all named after a less than honorable person.

Reply
Speak D Truth July 9, 2015 at 8:51 am

I didn’t get my way. I could care less about whether the flag was on the grounds or not but I did not think that now was the appropriate time to remove it. I believe the flag is about heritage and not hate. But, Ben Tillman was about nothing but hate. I have long wondered how anyone could pay homage to such a vile man. To honor him is to honor racism.

Reply
CNSYD July 9, 2015 at 9:44 am

To what level of “racism” do you ascribe Jefferson, Washington, etc.?

CharlieChan July 9, 2015 at 10:45 am

To a much lower level than Ben Fucking Tillman, that’s for sure.

CNSYD July 9, 2015 at 11:03 am

So it is like being pregnant. Either you are a racist or you are not. If we eliminate all monuments, references, etc. to any and all racists, who will be left? Where is the line to drawn on the racism scale?

CharlieChan July 9, 2015 at 11:12 am

No it’s not, and you’re basing your arguments on a false premise. There are obviously degrees of racism… From genocide to the “subtle racism of low expectations” and about 1000 gradients in between. It’s intellectually dishonest to pretend it’s a binary state. Start being honest with yourself before you try to debate with others.

CNSYD July 9, 2015 at 11:18 am

I am being honest with myself. My whole point (which went over your head) is that everyone is a racist to some degree. Now if that is true, where do you draw the line? If it OK with you that Jefferson is on the “good” side and Tillman is not? So who is on the “plus” side and who is on the “minus”?

CharlieChan July 9, 2015 at 11:21 am

It’s all on the minus side… but the minus side constitutes a number line that goes into infinity. Tillman is much further down that line than Jefferson.

CNSYD July 9, 2015 at 11:35 am

So then it follows that the Jefferson Memorial should come down, all nickels and $2 bills should be recalled, the Declaration (authored by Jefferson) needs to not be emphasized in the history books, etc., etc. If not, why not since he failed on the racist scale.

Squishy123 July 9, 2015 at 12:56 pm

Maybe but he was a state leader during one of the most constructive periods in the state’s history. Shit got done under his lead… racist, asshole, or not. Look at how much leaders get done in the current politically correct culture. A governor is lucky to get one or two pieces of important legislation passed in a full term.

When Mia and Rutherford (Haley’s new political soulmates) speak they sound just like Louis Farakahn. They are all the SAME.The message is the same.

While it’s true that we shouldn’t try to rewrite history, it’s also true that we get to decide which parts of our history to celebrate, and we make that decision every day, by action or inaction.”

The graves of Confederate war dead buried at federal cemeteries will likely no longer be decorated with Confederate flags following a vote Tuesday night by the House of Representatives.

The House passed an amendment that prohibits the controversial banners from being placed on any graves in federal cemeteries, The Hill reported. The matter must still be approved by the Senate.

What do all the Red states that have come to see the light on the Confederate flag/heroes have in common?

Foreign auto manufacturers:

South Carolina – BMW (how DID they miss that flag all these years?), Daimler Vans, Volvo (on the way)

Alabama – Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Honda

Mississippi – Toyota, Nissan

Tennessee – VW, Nissan

Kentucky – Toyota

This is no different than the Big Business response to the ‘religious freedom’ laws in Indiana and Arkansas that were pulled in record time.
The difference is the foreign car companies did it quietly and before they would have to explain back home – PARTICULARLY, the German companies – why they are only now discovering, in some cases, decades after they set up shop in these states, why they didn’t know what that flag stood for.

Reply
Squishy123 July 9, 2015 at 8:50 am

Those companies don’t come here because of the flag, they come here because they can get cheap labor in South Carolina. I don’t see them building plants in California or New York.

Reply
vicupstate July 9, 2015 at 8:54 am

Cheap labor, generous incentives and assured political clout that in a state as big as CA or NY they would never have, all played a part in their decisions to come here.

That’s probably true if your view of societal change is white-centric. However, if you think about the signal it sends the black citizens of SC, one of unity and inclusion, then it will probably have a greater than zero change. That is, if you care about South Carolinians who aren’t white. If you don’t, then yeah… the haters gonna hate and taking a flag down won’t change that.

First Thing A Racist Says July 9, 2015 at 10:08 am

“I have many, many black friends”

This is the first thing a racist will say to defend themselves. Having black acquaintances you tolerate doesn’t mean you aren’t racist. Even if they are your actual friends that you actually hang out with and talk to on a regular basis, that doesn’t make you special.

There are plenty of black folks who want that flag down. Knowing one or two that don’t doesn’t invalidate the thousands and thousands that do.

Rocky July 9, 2015 at 10:10 am

I have many black friends who’s black slave ancestors fought with Confederate soldiers to defend the South – there – fixed it for you.

Troofout July 9, 2015 at 10:58 am

Not in South Carolina. It was forbidden for slaves to fight for CSAm up to a certain point, then it was allowed. Slave troops were mustered, but then came the full brunt of Sherman’s march to SC. Everybody was scrambling. No real force of slave solders was ever deployed. All stayed home, as they were needed by their owners to help defend their homes. So a lot of that stuff about slaves in the CDA forces has to do with GA and other states.

notLindaBurke July 10, 2015 at 7:19 pm

Produce some historical evidence, and while you’re at it produce your black friends who are telling you such lies. I bet they’ll be hanging out in the Confederate Relic Room hoping for gullible fools to stop by. http://www.theroot.com/articles/history/2015/01/black_confederates_not_a_myth_here_s_why.html

So sick of hearing about this. It really doesn’t change anything. At least the flag blocked the view of the State House which was a major plus. Now we have no choice but to look at the idiots there. Those people who voted the flag down will still make racist comments behind closed doors and associate with only those of their own kind that they approve and entertain only those of their own kind unless there is a political reason to do otherwise. This was all political grandstanding on the backs of the slaughtered. The only good thing is if it will get Haley out of SC, then it really will be a great day in SC. Those who think some social justice has been implemented because of this decision are kidding themselves. It will take a helluva lot more than this for racial equality to be the reality in SC.

There are many who protested the Iraq War, but praised Bush for the positive impact his administration had in Africa. Life ain’t black and white. When you generalize with phrases “the same who” it’s such a generalization that your statement is immediately false, because all it takes is a few examples that don’t meet your world view to completely undermine your point. That’s the pitfall of racists. ALL blacks do this… ALL mexicans are this… ALL liberals believe this… That’s all bullshit. People are more complicated than that.

Now that the many have got what they have longed for for over 15 years– there should be no talk as some on the floor brought up of changing Tillman Hall on Clemson’s campus. If it offends you– then parents send your children elsewhere. As far as statues and other memorabilia that are located in various locations in SC and other states– you cannot wash history away. Things happened and yes many not pleasant– no matter what your color are offended, but please let this be the end to all or things may be reversed ie. Monuments commemorating any and all races, street and road names, building names– including Strom Thurmond and Martin Luther King.

In other words– give it a REST! Long may the South live and be strong! Now to those who are unhappy living in SC and other places where you may feel less than satisfied– move!

Each legislator had a viewpoint that deserved the respect of their colleagues and not ridicule. Yes– GRACE is a word and one that should be used on many occasions.

There is no place for Black gangs or the Ku Klux Clan. Now stay off the beautiful grounds of the SC Statehouse. There has been enough violence!

Last night several references were made to Tillman being a member of the Klan – he wasn’t, in fact, he was at odds with them. He was however a proud member of the “Redshirts” a similar though far better organized group.

Reply
CharlieChan July 9, 2015 at 10:02 am

The talk of Tillman Hall being changed started well before this flag debate. When they change the name, the mis-information brigade from Bullshit Mountain will jump up and down saying it’s part of the slippery slope of the flag downing. That conversation has been going on since January:

http://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/news/education/2015/01/13/resolution-introduced-rename-clemsons-tillman-hall/21718523/

Incidentally, whether he was a sheet carrying klansman or not, Pitchfork Ben was a real asshole and shouldn’t be honored by anyone… Just my opinion.

Reply
The Colonel July 9, 2015 at 10:08 am

“That conversation has been going on since January”

That conversation has been going on since they renamed in 1946. Tillman Hall was built in 1893 and known as the “Main Building” for most of it’s life. Tillman is responsible for the establishment of Clemson and Winthrop and it is probably appropriate that he have something named in his honor on both campuses – I’m thinking a lavatory somewhere in the basement of one of the buildings could be renamed Tillman’s Toilet…

Reply
CharlieChan July 9, 2015 at 10:12 am

And the conversation to bring down the flag has been going on since 1963… My specific point is, in January it was an actual conversation within the Clemson board and trustees in response to minority protests on campus. So…. IF they change the name, it has nothing to do with moving the flag, which will be exactly what all the racist loonies start screaming.

Reply
The Colonel July 9, 2015 at 10:48 am

I concur – that’s why I pointed out that it’s been going on since the name was changed. I suspect sometime in September there will be a “cease and desist bill” offered in the house to put a rest to all the “rename this or that” silliness.

Mr. Tillman’s statue should be left in place, his name should be left on the buildings, but his documented quotes should be put on the base of his statute and over the doors of any building named in his honor him. I think we can all agree that is fair and balanced.

Reply
Concerned for SC July 9, 2015 at 11:34 am

Yes, I think our history, heritage should be written to show all view points. Even the true facts about Strom Thurmond having a child with a black woman and hiding it all those years. He was not what he appeared. True he did a lot for SC, but the same can be said for many others. We would not have the outstanding Clemson University without some of our ancestors who we do not agree with today, but Clemson was one of the first schools in SC to lead the way to allowing people of color.

We cannot undo the past, but it is important to respect the views of all (not including deranged people like the suspect in the Charleston shootings). Mr. Rutherford still owes FOX news an apology. They are not to blame and neither is CNN even though their reporters and even our President are allowed to use the N word.

Education, family environment and schools play a VERY large part in these deranged children. Teachers need to be allowed to have a place to report troubled youth and no way should we allow high school dropouts without a degree to even be able to purchase a gun. We cannot continue to allow troubled youth and adults free range!

For many this is emotional, on both sides. Clearly a small segment of the state feels this was an attack on their heritage (and I’m not going to judge that). But for a much larger segment it was a move that signifies that the State has moved forward. Either way, it brings to close a long period of time where we flew a symbol over the dome, and later on the law, that signified defiance against the efforts of African Americans to obtain equal rights. It represented Jim Crow, segregation of our schools, and of our society. And in the last three weeks, it was a rallying issue for many in the Low Country, and in Charleston to move past that. Over the years one could say that the push and pull of state politics has always favored the Midlands and Upstate, Charleston and the Low Country often viewed as a Yankee haven and tourist spot. So in a way, this vote shows a rather unified state, at least for this issue. I thank the Legislature for the speed with which they addressed this. I also share the sentiment of others here, that now let’s get to work solving issues, like the roads.

So the flag is down, and our Senators and Representatives abandoned those of us who have supported them for years. Those proud of their heritage, need to decide what to do next. The answer is clear. We cannot support at the polls those who abandoned us. We must purge this group from government and start over. If Republicans will not put up people who will defend our heritage, we must look elsewhere. It is our vote that brought them to power and our vote has kept them there. It may mean losses for a few years, but sometimes you must tear down the old to make room for the new. The battle is lost but not the war. We need to fight for what we know to be right. As usual, this is the threat the Republicans have and will use. You must support us you have no choice. If you truly wanted us to follow through and you were a Democrat, you would be silent. Those who voted to take down the flag have gone a step too far. We can not hold our nose and continue to vote for them. That is not honorable. It is dishonorable. We must accept the consequences of having supported the wrong people. They seek to hide in numbers. We must start anew. I call on the Republican party to replace those who voted to remove the flag, but if they will not, we must. WE MUST NOT VOTE FOR ONE SINGLE PERSON WHO VOTED TO TAKE DOWN THE FLAG.

CharlieChan July 9, 2015 at 11:29 am

Actually, you are such a minority opinion now, it doesn’t really matter how you vote. I know that’s sort of the crux of this whole white supremacy milieu, but you will have to accept one day that the power in this country no longer rests with a single race and gender. It’s annoying, but it’s true. So, I put it to the flag supporters that if they despise America and the majority of their countrymen who approve of removing a symbol of hate from a government site, then maybe they should follow the other proud southerners who hated this country and move to South America. I hear it’s nice down there this time of year.

Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 11:40 am

I am not a white supremacist. The flag is part of our history that should not be relegated to a dusty dark room. Those who fought for the South had differing reasons. But many did so in defense of what they considered their homeland. WE MUST NOW DEFEND THEIR HONOR. Even if as you say we are small in number, small numbers count in close elections. WE MUST NOT VOTE FOR ONE SINGLE PERSON WHO VOTED TO TAKE DOWN THE FLAG!!!

nosympathy July 9, 2015 at 11:57 am

If it’s your ‘history’, fly it in your front yard if you don’t want it relegated to a dusty dark room. I don’t care what happens to it.

Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 12:00 pm

Yes it is my history. I have an obligation to speak up if I do not want it buried. Which I will do with my vote.

REAL Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 12:39 pm

Ill just go ahead and say it again as I don’t think you know how to scroll to find where I posted it just a few comments up

“What heritage is your dumbass talking about? My families “heritage” in this state goes back to before the Revolutionary war when there wasn’t even a “rebellion” yet so they were actually British citizens at that time. Am I crying there is no British flag there for the heritage of my ancestors that didn’t commit treason and defy a king before the war started? No, and the right side won the war and we rejoiced and continued to live, build, and work here in the south in South Carolina. Then a 2nd war broke so I also have heritage to soldiers that fought for the confederacy here in South Carolina, but they lost, so why do I need a flag of a defeated nation on a government ground to honor their heritage? The British one isn’t flying so why would the other loser (the Confederacy) get to fly a flag on state dollar supported property? The only people wanting that flag up are fucking idiots that hate another race (probably hate is wrong, jealous of). I’m a white southern American and that flag had no business there, and doesn’t define my heritage. I define my own heritage! And if you don’t like that its gone, move the fuck out of this state you redneck fuck head. Hell I’ll even drive you as Im sure your car is off its tires on cinder blocks in the front yard. Go ahead and give me your address to the trailer you live in off 321 and I’ll come pick you up. Take off the hood and show yourself coward. You have no real Southern Pride you jack off all you have is hate.”

Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 2:15 pm

You assume my heritage is not as long as yours. You would be wrong. My direct ancestor fought the British under the command of Francis Marion. I am proud of that history as well. WE MUST NOT VOTE FOR ONE PERSON WHO VOTED TO TAKE DOWN THAT FLAG!

sounds odd July 9, 2015 at 2:38 pm

But your ancestors before the one that fought for Francis Marion were British at one point were they not? Then why not fly the British flag in honor of that heritage. If you are going to claim one you must claim the other or it is not valid. Otherwise your entire point is BS

which way did he go george? July 9, 2015 at 11:36 pm

I noticed he didn’t reply to you on that last point. the truth of his BS must have been brought out where even he couldn’t keep on going. some people just cant handle the truth I guess.

mamatiger92 July 9, 2015 at 1:41 pm

Taking the flag off the State House grounds buries your history? That makes no sense.

mamatiger92 July 9, 2015 at 1:40 pm

THIS. Buy a dozen and put them up all over your front yard if you want. But keep it off of the State House grounds.

mamatiger92 July 9, 2015 at 1:38 pm

What about the honor of those South Carolinians who suffered under that same flag?

nosympathy July 9, 2015 at 11:51 am

Cry me a river. Wahhhh Wahhhhh Wahhhhh

Southern Pride July 9, 2015 at 12:09 pm

Not a baby cry, a battle cry. A call to action.

WE MUST NOT VOTE FOR ONE SINGLE PERSON WHO VOTED TO TAKE DOWN THE FLAG.
.

mamatiger92 July 9, 2015 at 11:22 am

Because you will no longer have a heritage when the flag comes down? Interesting.

I think it’s going to be an eye opening experience for those who voted down the flag come November. Others have been tossed out of office for just mentioning what was done last night.

I just found out that the Confederate Relic room is basically a Hilton Hotel for Flags. It’s heated, air conditioned, and it doesn’t rain in there. Why didn’t anyone tell me sooner? Hell I would have jumped off this pole and rand down the hill.

When they move the flag, can the pole be moved to the Governor’s office?

The comment section on articles like this are truly enlightening. I feel privileged that I was able to see so many diverse view points regarding a flag that is responsible for bad roads, racism, Republicans, Christians, white people, country music, and “being on the wrong side of history.” Hate the flag doesn’t make. Last time I checked black people were 18% of the population and responsible for 53% of murders at a rate of 5 to 1 black on white crime. Hide your wife and daughters whitey!

So nice to see your hateful ways continue even though your side prevailed.
Taking down the flag will serve no purpose as you have shown.
Please sir, go forth and hate.

Soft Sigh from Hell July 9, 2015 at 2:19 pm

The flag that goes up in the relic room should be one of those innocuous blue ones and not a red and crossed hate banner. This should be no problem in that the heritage pols have already said the blue flags are perfectly acceptable to them as substitutes.
