BATTLE LINES DRAWN IN THE AFTERMATH OF BANNER’S REMOVAL …
|| By FITSNEWS || The legislative debate over the presence of the Confederate flag on the grounds of the S.C. State House is over … mercifully.
After hours of emotional, acrimonious debate, the S.C. House voted 94-20 to remove the banner “free and clear” – which is exactly what the S.C. Senate voted to do earlier in the week by a 37-3 margin.
The decision came three weeks after the horrific, racially motivated “Holy City Massacre” – the mass murder of nine black churchgoers at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C. The Mother Emanuel victims – among them S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor – were gunned down during a Bible study by Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist who used the Confederate flag as his calling card.
We supported removing the flag. In fact lawmakers pretty much followed our advice in taking the banner down sooner rather than later. Now, hopefully both chambers can move on to addressing the myriad of issues which make South Carolina one of the poorest, least intelligent, most underemployed, most dangerous states in America.
Will they do that?
Doubtful …
The “heritage” crowd – which has already routed millions of tax dollars toward the preservation of various Confederate nostalgia – are pushing for new government funding for a “permanent shrine” to the flag.
We oppose such funding … just as we oppose government funding for any museum (Confederate or otherwise).
Meanwhile the “hate” crowd – fresh off of its victory – is said to be eying a broader “purge” of Confederate-related monuments, buildings, roads, etc.
In fact such a purge is the subject of the cartoon (above) from Ed Wilson.
For those unfamiliar with Wilson’s work, he draws once a week for Steve Robertson‘s Waccamaw Papers, and belongs to the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. In fact he won the Palmetto State Press Association’s award for editorial cartooning earlier this year.

As to the evil which results from a censorship, it is impossible to measure it, for it is impossible to tell where it ends – Jeremy Bentham
#termlimits. We can start with just for white males if that makes it more palatable, and then let the courts point out it has to apply universally.
The winners of war always get to write the history(whether true or not) and erase the historical traces of their conquest.
How many times have the winners been tried for “war crimes” ?????
Yep. Just remember, Jap officers were sentenced to death for waterboarding prisoners during WW2, or as the US government puts it, “enhanced interrogation”.
It always pays to be the winner. LOL
Are you suggesting the blacks have conquered the whites? Holy shit, I hope not. They sold their own into slavery in Africa for shiny shells and bags of corn seed.
It’s not that bad yet, but PC society is cleansing every reference to the Confederacy to absurd degree, even the Dukes of Hazard for crying out loud:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHO1PprfmkY
TV Land has every right to decide what they want to show on their TV channel.
Dukes will probably just go back to CMT anyways.
“TV Land has every right to decide what they want to show on their TV channel.”
I actually said that last week.
That however, has nothing to do with my comment on PC society, which is not “TV Land”.
Since the African American monument was part of the flag deal, dose it come down as well ?????
No, but they will no longer fly the African battle-flag at that monument.
Perfect!
Well of course it doesn’t. But, you cannot rewrite history. It happened. People will regret this day. The hypocrisy and racism from those opposed to the flag knows no end. They just want to be able to dish out the same thing to the whites. They don’t want racial equality. Interact and it is obvious.
“The hypocrisy and racism from those opposed to the flag knows no end.”
ohhh, the irony…
Lap it up. Look at Detroit and Baltimore. Wow, how progressive.
Sure, because the racial climate in Detroit & Baltimore is totally relevant to this discussion.
LMAO!
You have a hard time wrapping your head around the “big picture”, don’t you?
I see your point on the big issue, I get it, I do. But there is also a big issue on the other side.
We’ve compromised. We’ve done the right thing IMO. If we allow people to come together and bury this racial barrier — they will.
To me that is the “big picture” way of thinking.
I leave my house every morning hoping that I can brighten just one person’s day with a smile or a genuine greeting or gesture, not matter what that person looks like. I won’t sit here and explain that many of my friends and people who have made major positive impacts on my life are black, because some hate filled bigot lurking on FitsNews will lecture me about how insincere I am for tolerating my “negro” acquaintances. My (white) son is the only Caucasian player on his AAU basketball team. We attend tournaments where we are, literally, two of maybe a dozen non-black people out of a couple hundred. I know what it’s like to attempt to immerse yourself in an environment that you don’t always feel welcome in. I’m not, for a second, suggesting that I know what it’s like to be black, I’m simply saying that I know what it feels like to be looked at like I don’t belong somewhere and treated differently because of my skin color. We need to make a concerted effort to treat fellow humans better. We need to be inclusive toward anyone who is worthy of inclusion. I am hopeful that this is a step in the right direction.
Far too few are like you. Sad to say.
You are so full of shit that it oozes – hence your posting name. LOL
more triteness out of scblues. pedestrian.
more shit oozing from fecal matters – predictable
You’re a real peach.
You’re a real turd.
I guess so. Enlighten me.
The truth hurts. It is entirely relevant.
How, exactly? I’m all ears.
How is it relevant?
The flag is gone, so should the monument. All of them. The statehouse is a monument enough–to everyone.
I not longer reply to the easy bait like click. Thanks all the same Pogo, but I’m not playing your game.
E Norma Scok has been here for a long time, he’s not Pogo.
The last name is not spelled correctly. I’ve been here long enough to know that. Unless he bought into the drinking game.
Not sure what you are saying. I spell it the same way everytime.
And ALL the monuments should be removed. Its not a tit for tat argument..none of them a have a purpose there.
Absolutely correct. No monument is ever truly needed on government land. If they cause this much division it turns from pointless to a huge unnecessary distraction. No monuments, no bullcrap.
If you want a monument that badly buy some property and put it there, then the government can go suck eggs and we can be left out of this shit.
BOTH monuments should be removed–the AA monument and the Confederate flag. The AA monument was only a peace offering when the flag was moved from atop the statehouse to where it is now.
Take’em both down.
Maybe I am wrong — I always thought your alias was last name Shock. I beg your pardon if I am mistaken. I don’t disagree with your statement concerning monuments, but I do not agree now is the time.
I often told my husband early on in marriage – pick and choose your battles, you aren’t going to win them all – interpretation, not more than 50/50. If we win 50% of our battles we are fortunate in the best of marriages/relationships. There is also the song and dance -timing is very important.
It is long past time that flag was taken down. There will come a time that is right to move all those hateful memories to a museum – now isn’t that time.
Better luck next time BABY. Not playing your game.
What does Detroit and Baltimore have in common? Hint – poverty.
Poor pitching?
Democrats in charge for ever. Therefore the poverty.
White flight to suburbs from cities like Detroit and Baltimore is how they ended up as ghettoes. Combination of GI Bill housing money and interstates and “fear of others” did those cities in.
“There are lots of reasons that whites have so much more wealth than nonwhites. How the GI Bill played out is one of those reasons. Whites were able to use the government guaranteed housing loans that were a pillar of the bill to buy homes in the fast growing suburbs. Those homes subsequently rose greatly in value in coming decades, creating vast new household wealth for whites during the postwar era.
“But black veterans weren’t able to make use of the housing provisions of the GI Bill for the most part. Banks generally wouldn’t make loans for mortgages in black neighborhoods, and African-Americans were excluded from the suburbs by a combination of deed covenants and informal racism.
“In short, the GI Bill helped fostered a long-term boom in white wealth but did almost nothing to help blacks to build wealth. We are still living with the effects of that exclusion today — and will be for a long time to come.” http://www.demos.org/blog/11/11/13/how-gi-bill-left-out-african-americans
Good point!
According to Rick Quinn, and the sycophant from Politico who wrote this article detailing the backroom deals to secure passage, Todd Rutherford has agreed to not “… go after …” other confederate monuments, statues, relics, etc.
http://www.politico.com/story/2015/07/confederates-at-the-brink-119873.html?cmpid=sf#ixzz3fOsk5200
For someone Fits fashions as a Neo-Confederate, “little” Ricky Quinn got himself some good national press out of this deal. Those of us who knew Ricky in college, knew he was referred to as “Little Ricky” back then, as he quickly ballooned up once in The House.
Interesting that this article says Quinn went straight to The House after college, which was true, but it infers that it was after he’d graduated, which was not true – took Quinn many years later to finally graduate with that History degree, and no acceptance into law school. Also, the article refers to his “drinking buddy” Ed “Snitch” Givens and Quinn’s promise that whatever compromise included taking down the flag, as a “lobbyist”. Why no reference to Ed “Snitch” GIvens as a convicted felon?
All of them are a bunch of scumbag cockroaches, and people like Quinn put SC through extended misery when that flag should have been removed when Beasley attempted to. Thanks for nothing, fat ass.
P— on Todd Rutherford.
Well someone did mention the “doughnut room” last night, I suspect Little Ricky knows where that is.
“At 3 a.m., Democrat Gilda Cobb-Hunter, a legislative black caucus
member and one of the most vocal proponents of removal on the House
floor, had nestled into a booth at the IHOP…
Quinn was next door at the Tin Roof bar, sucking down a Maker’s Mark and Coke.”
How was Rick Quinn drinking Maker’s Mark and Coke at 3:00 a.m., when state law says bars have to close at 2:00 a.m.?
Well, the mayor of Memphis wants to dig up and relocate Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife. This is just the tip of the lunacy iceberg.
“This is just the tip of the lunacy iceberg.”
You are the tail end of the lunacy something or another.
What DO you call an iceberg sized poo?
fecal matters
per usual, scblues comes in with an insult. so pedestrian.
per usual, fecal matters blathering shit – so predictable
My dog, who is quite slow from a bout with canine parvovirus as a puppy, seems to have more wit and intellect than you. Must be absolutely horrible to have to walk around in your headspace.
Oh my! The shit is hitting the fan, huh? LOL
“…The decision came three weeks after the horrific, racially motivated…”
That’s 2
I ordered some scallops the other week, and they had that ammonia smell. That was Horrific – there’s three.
They probably came out of the Charleston water treatment plant… and that ain’t ammonia you’re smelling.
“Only two things smell like fish.”

I only eat one of them anymore. Since the BP Gulf fiasco and Fukushima, I don’ trust seafood, not knowing where it came from. Local freshwater fish is so laden with mercury, you run the risk of turning your toilet into a giant thermometer every time you take a leak.
Colonel, only 48 more to go before you hit 50. Are you splitting with Folks?
Washington Redskins will likely be renamed.
“DC Red Alimentary Canals” – motto: Shove ’em!! Fight Song: Hail to the Assholes!
Get “south” off of South Carolina.
And repaint that “gray” aircraft carrier.
And don’t get me started on Leesville and Leesburg.
Don’t you have a rock to get back under?
In a state still crawling with unreconstructed Confederates?
Communism 101… erase history.
Home schooled or church schooled?
K-2nd Public, 3rd-6th Private, 7th-12th Public, Post secondary Public. None of those years were spent in South Carolina, rather spread across IL, NH, NE and NC.
This is silly. I think with the flag down, this ends. No one outside of the fringe is going to suggest we dig up rotting Uncle Festus, and move him to a paupers grave. The flag issue was caused by the horrific………..Damned. Now I’m sayin’ it.
http://wreg.com/2015/07/07/statue-debate-heats-up-as-city-council-gets-set-to-vote/
Just another brick in the wall.. More division.. more hate……. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd.. you’re wrong, again!
It will die down. Those issues will get little attention and fade into the background. The only way they will get attention is if they are fed.
Rahm’s Rule will keep it alive.
The crisis is over.
Yes, but the crisis will continue to breath life into foolish suggestions on how we further the history shaming. It’s not over until Rahm’s Rule says it’s over.
I am sure there will be many opportunist, but the window of opportunity is closed.
No, the window of opportunity has been completely shattered. In order for it to be closed again, it will have to be boarded up and painted over. I appreciate your idealism though.
Only time will tell the tale. The families have been buried, the flag is being removed — the windows, assuming they are shattered — will be replaced quickly.
Idealistic? Perhaps.
Hey look at us, we had a difference of opinion and refrained from calling each other names. Too bad everyone here can’t maintain a civil decorum.
Agree! It certainly makes conversation more interesting and I sleep better at night vs. the hate bashing.
No, it was a horrific – Jesus!!!! That danged Horrific is burned in my head. Never mind…….
Do you count the mayor of memphis as a fringer?
Protests at Yale because there is a building named for John C. Calhoun shows there is no end in sight.
Uh, the flags were removed from Fort Sumter. The US House just voted to ban flags from being placed at civil war cemeteries. The Dukes of Hazzard was pulled from tv because a car had the confederate flag on it. The mayor of memphis called for digging up nathan bedford forrest’s bones and moving them somewhere else so they can rename the park. McConnell called for removing Jefferson Davis from the kentucky capitol. People are calling for the removal of statues of Davis, Lee, Stephens, and various other people associated with the confederacy from the Rotunda. People are calling for Birmingham to move a memorial to confederate soldiers that looks like a miniature version of the Washington monument from a park there. People have called for a stained glass window with Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on them to be removed from the national cathedral. People have called for a park in Baltimore to be renamed because it was named after a Confederate general. Confederate flags are no longer allowed to be sold at Civil War battlefields.
What a wonderful groundswell.
Godspeed to them all. It is like the end of the Soviet Union. Begone with all the Stalin stuff.
Exactly. It is all history. Why tear down this stuff? We can’t forget our heritage!
Germany should fly a Nazi flag on monuments in front of important government buildings. Heritage not hate! Some Germans had ancestors who died fighting to protect what they believed in, who cares if they were fighting on Hitler’s side?
Get over your self already. You bitched and moaned about SC needing to take the flag down ASAP, complained about anyone wanting to have an honest discussion about what would be the plans would be if it came down, and now that the flag is coming down, you say you’re opposed to any funding to put it in a museum!?
Well, maybe if you and the mainstream media assholes would have allowed those who had concerns to debate the issue without being vilified as modern day black hating, whip cracking men whose only agenda in Columbia is to return to Jim Crow, then maybe other groups could have chimed in, maybe started their own foundation for an appropriate venue; even though I’m sure no matter where it goes it will be blamed for anything racial, because the flag causes people to be racists and all. I predict we’ll be having this same debate in another 15 years of having to take it down from the museum.
I know your job is to create fire to keep people coming to your site, etc,, but for someone that claims to be such a free market, free speech guy, you sure did a great impersonation of liberals who are only open minded as long as you agree with them. There was no reason this issue should have been rushed through, shame to you, the media and outside groups. You helped successfully tear this state apart when it just came together like never before. Congratulations, and I hope you get your check from the SC state chamber and the like,
” horrific, racially motivated ”
Everyone… well you know the drill.
17 major news media outlet satellite trucks surrounding the state house. News chopper overhead, heavy security force present. Overheard the group planning the ceremony to take down the flag, likely will not allow civilians on the grounds near the flag during the ceremony. Should be interesting.
Wow! I wouldn’t want to be you today.
Halley and the pseudo Reps are getting their moment of glory. South Carolinians have long, long memories.
Fortunately, it’s a generation thing. The next generation will only know the hate that is passed on by this generation. The choice belongs to the parents.
It is my personal opinion that the hate and division will suffer a slow death, just as the confederate flag over the state house did.
In 2010, they couldn’t remember from June until November that Nikki Haley had never paid any state, federal or county taxes on time and/or without liens or penalties.
That would tell many people that she was not the kind of person you elect to any public office. But, not South Carolinians.
South Carolina to he renamed as South Ohio.
East Georgia has a better ring to it. Ohio is too good of a state to be associated with the trash in this state.
Or Old Carolina
That’s racist.
Then why do they keep moving down here? Is anyone even remaining there?
http://www.cliparthut.com/south-carolina-palmetto-tree-and-moon-clipart-LquzK1.html
Because SC companies recruit us to move down here and pay us well to stay.
Bullshit.
According to every Ohio person I talk to, they take a pay cut to get here but love the “culture” and the area. Seriuosly..you may more money here than you dod there?
Oddly, immediately after they get here, want to change it to whatever they left.
Maybe some do. I didn’t, but I didn’t come down here from Ohio.
Every person from the midwest I’ve met complains more about the heat and humidity than they brag about the culture. What culture is there in Columbia? Edventure?
Well thats a given. I can;t figure out why anyone wants to live on Columbia.
If Columbia is better than where you left, then..wow.
“According to every Ohio person I talk to, they take a pay cut to get here but love the “culture” and the area.”
There’s another element too though…Ohio is to SC as Mexico is to the US.
Those successful in Mexico stay there….those not are crossing the border by hiking miles in the desert….
You must not keep up with news from Ohio.
They have more serial kidnappers/murderers than any state this side of California. There’s a missing women case going on now.
“Ohio is too good of a state—” FOR WHAT? The times I have been through Ohio I haven’t seen anything worth stopping for.
Not sure if you are familiar with some folks from Ohio’s sticks and that includes northern Ohio where you can’t pass the problem off on W. Virginia. No short supply of good ‘ol boys and meth addicts either.
I support putting it in a museum. I think we should give it to the Sons of Confederate something. That should be free and also appears to be the group most interested in that Virginia flag. Let them have it and make them promise to display it prominently for all 100 visitors across the state to view.
Its time to tear down the SC Governors Mansion … it was built by BLACK SLAVES. Haley can move to a Motel 6.
Along with the fence around the Horseshoe and many of the buildings along the Horseshoe. They were all built by slave labor, time for them to come down.
I Support flying the flag @ malfunction junction ( I-20 and I-26 ) in Columbia, SC.
Are the redneck regions really going to take revenge on their wayward pols, or will the next dozen cases of PBR wash the heat away in the typical raving ‘neck?
I am a total beer snob, but there really is nothing better, on a blistering South Carolina afternoon, than an ice cold PBR. I always get a kick out of people who look down on my PBR at the lake, while they’re holding their Budweiser or Coors.
I had to look that up – PBR? I do remember Old Milwaukee’s Best. I’m a total beer snob too, but on the rare occasion I drink it, I prefer Black and Tan or Blue Moon.
If I’m not drinking an IPA, a double IPA, a tripel or a quad, I am drinking PBR. I honestly try not to touch any another American style lager beers, as most of them have zero character. Haven’t had an Old Milwaukee’s Best, the “Beast” as we used to call it, since college. I think I’ll hold onto that 20 year old memory. :)
We drank Old Millwater in college when there was a beer price war as it was always the lowest price.
Nothing like having to buy your own beer to make you appreciate the dollar….LOL
The Beast — Exactly!
I’ve read you or someone else mention that recently. I’ll have to try a few.
In your words, won’t that make you a redneck?
Who says I’m not a redneck?
you saying you aren’t? ;)
Name three characters from The Dukes of Hazzard and tell me what kind of car they drove.
If you don’t want this to happen you need to take a stand now. WE MUST NOT CAST ONE VOTE FOR ANYONE WHO VOTED TO TAKE DOWN THE FLAG! That is the only way to send a message to those Senators and Representatives who abandoned the people who put them in power. We have to send a message. They are gone!
Lick your wounds, pick yourself up and shake it off. That ship has sailed. My Senator, who I typically do not agree with, had enough character to know this was the right thing for SC as a whole.
I am more likely to vote for those who chose to do the right thing vs. those who have strong held beliefs in lieu of what is the right thing to do for our state.
You would have voted for him anyway! So he gained nothing. But 90% of people who disagree with this act would have voted for him as well. The loss of their vote will send a message.
No, as a matter of fact I have helped campaign against him. I still think he has been in office too long. I still have strong held beliefs that he was in the wrong when SC had a lost election.
I do think he was right this time. So does that 90% you are touting. If the people didn’t want it — it would not have happened.
I am not only proud of our state representatives, I am also proud of the people as a whole.
I don’t think 90% of the people who did not want the flag down think he did the right thing, the loss of those votes will hurt and send a message.
I posted it yesterday. Most of your hardcore – FAR FAR FAR right leaning are in the upstate. Rep. Henderson sent out a survey, her district is a VERY conservative/traditional pocket of the state. It was overwhelmingly in favor of removing the flag.
That 90% of people who didn’t want the flag down is an insignificant portion of the people who actually vote and DID want it down. You are talking 90% of less than probably 10% of a couple districts. More specifically Bright and Pitts.
The debate is over and the majority are happy with the end result.
I can only assume that you representative is a Republican since this is SC. When election time comes around they will still be pissed that he voted to bring the flag down. They will then look at his Democratic opponent and realize that he also would have voted to take the flag down. Plus, They don’t share many, if any, political views with this guy. They will choose the lesser of two evils and the Republican will stay in office.
No matter who gets elected to office, They flag will never be placed back on the Statehouse Grounds. Whether we agree with the removal of the flag or not we must ask ourselves ” Do we vote democrat and condemn our future because we are pissed about a vote that is now in our past?”
Bull crap! If people vote for Republicans who voted to take the flag down they are cowards. They are being told, you have to vote for us, you have no choice. Terms are only two years. Even if a democrat wins we can vote him out after two years The important thing is to send a message that will not be forgotten!, and kicking these cowards is the way to send that message. Don’t be held hostage. Don’t be a coward. We must not vote for one single person who voted to take the flag down!!!!
And how much damage will the democrats do in that 2 years? How much history and heritage will they destroy? How much more will they take away from you? You find a Republican in the primary then go for it. You put a democrat in office and you cut your nose off to spite to your face.
Bull shit!
Hopefully, one more nail inthe coffin of Katrina’s political career. Hopefully, we see a lot of these self-serving roaches, regardless of which side they were on, voted out because their constituents didn’t like their position. She’s not the only one and this isn’t the only issue (reason) to vote many of them out.
“Palmetto State Press Association’s award for editorial cartooning earlier this year.”
That is very similar to when Pete Yanity and Mr. Interception Todd Ellis won broadcaster of the year.
What’s next? White people.
Yes. Since most slave owners were white and most klansmen (if not all) were too, looking upon those of a pasty color will be hurtful to anyone descended or possibly descended crom African slaves. Caucazoids will necessarily have to undergo some form of pigmentation alteration to set this right.
BREAKING NEWS … In National Poll, Trump Takes GOP Lead … (and, Trump is impressed with Will Folks *wink**wink*). Get on board, Sic. He wants you .. possible spot in his administration if he wins.
Boehner calls for review of Confederate symbols in Capitol…
He would. He is such an ass lick. They say the WH doctor couldn’t give Barry an enema until they got Boehner’s tongue extracted from back there.
A guy named Leroy Knight out of Gaston is the registered agent for the Klan according to SC Sec. of State. He has a pretty bad rap sheet according to SC Judicial site.
Like child molestation?
Lexington County, where else?
But he’s got the right last name.
My guess is almost all the building names at Clemson, Winthrop, and some at USC will be the next targets.
Get ready for the student loggia, or the the Clemson clocktower!
Ed Wilson looks like he takes a lot of Robert Arial’s technique to heart.
What the hell is Haley talking about?
“Long chain of events of the actions of nine individuals”
What actions? Getting shot?
Start with the removal of the Slavery monument on the State House Grounds.
That was part of the original deal to get the flag off the State House. So it should go: too.
It offends anyone who actually knows the real history of slavery, and who actually enslaved the blacks: Yankee Manufacturers in Mass., Conn., RI, New York, etc. and their get rich quick plantation owner partners. All financed with Yankee money. That monument covers up the truth, with wishful thinking lies and needs to go.
Agreed,
How do we keep the GOPgoobers furious at the GOPols who “betrayed” them? At least until the next election.
That can only help.
History is always more complex and complicated than most people have the patience, attention span, intellect, and wisdom to truly understand and thus judge appropriately. Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it.
Why yes, Mr. Folks, I AM a psychiatrist—sit down and tell me
