LEGISLATION NEEDS ONE MORE VOTE BEFORE MOVING TO S.C. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
|| By FITSNEWS || The South Carolina Senate voted overwhelmingly to remove the Confederate flag from the north lawn of the S.C. State House this week.
Only three Senators – Lee Bright, Harvey Peeler and Danny Verdin – objected to the proposal.
Another supporter of the flag – S.C. Senator Tom Corbin – was absent.
Also absent were Senators Ray Cleary, Greg Gregory, Shane Martin and Shane Massey.
The deciding tally came moments after Senators voted 36-3 against an amendment that would have put the matter to a public vote. Another amendment which would have allowed the banner to fly on Confederate Memorial Day was defeated by a 22-16 margin.
The bill was scheduled to receive a routine third reading on Tuesday before being sent to the S.C. House of Representatives, but Bright objected to this customary procedure – meaning a two-thirds vote will be required to send the measure across the lobby.
Obviously that margin shouldn’t be a problem.
The rebel banner has become an issue again in the aftermath of last month’s horrific, racially motivated “Holy City Massacre” – the mass murder of nine black churchgoers at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C. The Mother Emanuel victims – including S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor – were gunned down during a Bible study by Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist who used the Confederate flag as his calling card.
We’ve written extensively in the aftermath of the shooting in support of removing the flag – and doing so expeditiously. We’ve also provided some extensive historical context related to this debate (see here and here).
Senators voted overwhelmingly to take the flag down despite a recently announced Ku Klux Klan rally, alleged threats against lawmakers and robo-calls attacking flag opponents.
Assuming two-thirds of lawmakers give the flag removal bill third reading on Tuesday, the measure will be taken up by the S.C. House of Representatives – where it will have to navigate a contentious debate over a proposed replacement banner.
House members have three options: They can pass the Senate bill, amend it or vote it down.
If they amend it, the Senate would have to concur with any changes prior to the legislation being sent to S.C. governor Nikki Haley – a former flag supporter who now says she wants the banner to come down.
Our advice? The House needs to concur with the Senate and take the banner down – free and clear – without insisting on anything in return. Then both chambers need to move on to addressing the myriad of issues which make South Carolina one of the poorest, least intelligent, most underemployed, most dangerous states in America.
Which hurts all of its citizens …

Thank you. This is a day all South Carolina residents can be proud of.
PS – Guest – wrong again. Please give me some investment advice, I’ll do the opposite and retire at 55.
That Bernie Madoff guy sounds like a great person to give your money! LMAO!!!
And buy more gold.
Only from Glennie Beck!
Make sure you tell us Beck sent you, because we give him a cut of what we scam off you!
How do some of the assholes get elected. One of them wanted to put it to a public vote. Not even realizing this is a representative republic not a democracy.
It’s a great day in South Carolina!
21st Century here we come. Ready or not.
WAIT WAIT WAIT! I’m not ready! Can we please go back to the 1800s? LMAO!!!
Yes, this is the answer to all of our problems. Kumbaya errbody, kumbaya.
Cry some more for us, would you?
Honestly couldn’t care less if it stays or goes. It’s a non issue for people, with a life.
For someone who doesn’t care and has a life, you seem to be posting here a lot about it.
Bet it was an issue for the nine folks slaughtered in Charleston but guess they do not have a life anymore, huh . . .
You’re putting words in their mouths. That’s offensive.
Somehow I doubt those nine were ardent supporters of the confederate flag, but that’s how you fuckers depicted Clementa Pinckney.
Then why comment, dipshit?
Yes right .
Why you have so much of a”life” that you felt the need to come here and comment on something you don’t really care about
No the answer to our problems is to give a tax cut to rich people so they can “invest” and “create” jobs.
So, I guess the ‘Rising of The South’ is going to have to be postponed again this year? Y’all better work harder. At this rate, The South will have to be raised from the ocean floor by the time you get it together.
What? The Conservative Response Team’s video and robocalls didn’t work?!?
But a Republican took it down, after the Democrats put it up. That’s really got to piss you off, unless you’re stupid. They took your issue and kicked your ass with it.
Our Legislature took it down. All of them. Republican and Democratic – well except for three Republicans who voted no.
Yes, conservatives were the only ones fighting to keep the racist flag up. Didn’t do a very good job of fighting…again…at least they stick to their heritage
Again, ask Tom Davis. The GOP and Dem members of the Senate were nearly uniformly in agreement. Three GOP members voted no, but who gives a rats ass. It was personal to nearly all of them. They didn’t agree with Pinkney most of the time, but they had a high level of respect for him. He was one of them, their friend. And that is what got them to move to take it down. Three redneck sticks in the mud don’t take away that liberals, moderates and conservatives acted together today out of respect for all the people of the State. Geesh – just once, just one damned time, let’s look at something historic and actually appreciate it.
But a Republican took it down, after the Democrats put it up.
Just like in ’65.
You mean that used sales car guy, who couldn’t even sell a used car at a deeply discounted price?
Makes sense he’s the go to voice-over guy for stupid conservatives.
How ironic. It’s the biggest victory the S.C. Democrats have had in 20 years, and they defeated themselves, and Haley will get all the credit. On top of that, it’s meaningless, other than symbolic. Sucks to be you.
Good for Haley. See finally quit listening to you dumb racists. Aren’t you glad you elected her?
Can we make photocopies and mail out the copies with her autograph?
If the flag is racist; who put it up? The party of racism? (:
But I’m a racist that wants it to stay up, and I called Haley a traitor for wanting to take it down…
Ernest Frederick “Fritz” Hollings (D)
I don’t care one way or the other. She can’t run again. She did your bidding. Let her deal with it.
I thought this was a victory for Republicans, but she’s doing the bidding of Democrats? You guys don’t make a lick of sense!
Who gives a shit? It was a meaningless move. She thinks it can help her. And it does the Democrat Party no good, other than continuing your record of meaningless legislation against harmless boogey-men.
How can it be a great victory for Republicans over the racist Democrats, but Haley be doing the bidding of Democrats which will do them no good?
How can Haley be doing something great by being a follower on this and then be a traitor for being associated with it?
You guys are talking yourselves into circles.
Sure, buddy, keep telling yourself that!
No, this time, the state of South Carolina is the big winner. Too bad you can’t see that.
If only senate could move so swiftly on meaningful legislation.
As long as the Democrat-backed gas tax was defeated, I really don’t care if the flag is moved, or not.
Noooooo, the gas tax is a great conservative idea! Haley should really sign that! If you hate taxes you are a no good socialist lib! LMAO!!!
I really don’t care either, it’s just curious how fast this pointless topic caught fire.
Who cares? Take the flag down and we won’t hear about it anymore. Good riddance. Let Mississippi deal with that shit.
You mean the Haley-backed gas tax, right?
I want everyone in SC to pay a dime per gallon more in taxes, because they are NOT taxed enough already. Empty out your pockets! Pogo, go around and collect the money.
She’s not running again, and you lost. If you and Haley were going to win won together, I’m glad it was something that is meaningless.
translation?
The Confederate flag is meaningless? Good. When it is finally pulled down, burn it. No point in keeping something meaningless right?
And before some idiot troll says something, I say put a union flag on the pole to symbolize SC coming back into the union. The American flag can remain on top of the dome with the SC flag. Only a certain idiot troll that creeps certain posters wants to burn American flags.
yes sir Mr. Rich please direct deposit this last check directly up my azz.
Lee Bright! LOL
What a buffoon.
You got that Bright, I mean, right!
His nickname here in Spartanburg is “Not so”.
Oh that’s so fucking unique… stick to your day job there Milton Burle.
Everyone’s a critic.
What do you call the mouth breathers that elected him?
Less Than.
Not in my district, but last time he ran against a guy accused of rape.
A cow has four stomachs…the SC Senate has 3 assholes.
We can make it four, let’s make Anne Coulter an honorary member.
LMAO! I used to listen to her — for a few days….
But the question remains:
Do you still faithfully listen to Rush Limpballs, Hannity and O’Rilley???
No. None of the above. I don’t even have cable. I get my news via internet.
yep, her and Queen Namrata can go shopping and be BFF’s
Can I watch??????????????
Let’s add Michelle, Sarah, and that little “witch’ from Delaware!
YOU BETCHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you calling Fritz Hollings an asshole for putting the flag up?
And: Is the media rushing to Fritz to get his reaction, or are they silent as Monica sneaking in the Oval office, in order to save your from your shame and hypocrisy?
Sure. He was an asshole for putting the flag up.
Happy now?
You are a racist Democrat? You are doing nothing but defending what Fritz and the racist Democrats put up after all.
Speaking of shame & hypocrisy, we’re all going to pitch in and buy you a copy of the Sanford tell-all.
Oh I am willing to bet that there are more than 3… a lot more.
Oh, there’s more than that…Corbin had an “excused absence”.
Really????
if that’s true, it just confirms what a coward he really is.
The Republican Majority has voted to remove the flag that Democrats put up. Sure, Three Senators voted for it to stay and I assume all 3 were Republican but without the Republican Majority’s support the measure would have failed. Imagine how different things would be if the racist Democratic Party had not voted to fly it over 50 years ago.
It was no longer partisan. It was Tom Davis who first pushed this – he lost a friend. This was never partisan. It had nothing to do with what party someone belonged to when it went up, when it was moved to the monument in 2000, or who is in charge today. It was personal to the Senate members (except three) and they voted that way. Great day for South Carolina.
Wow. How insightful. So much so , that you should re-post this about 1,000 times per day.
Thanks, I may just do that.
This is why the comments section has gone so far downhill.
I tell what you upsets me – Breitfart blocked me from posting on their site. Too bad, the loonies gonna be going off tonight.
Keep preaching it. The Democrats have a difficult time with reality.
And the reality about the Confederate flag REALLY pisses them off, because it is so true. And Haley took their issue, and screwed them with it. They are on here cheering for a Republican who is now spent. The gOP will be all over her now.
Shane Martin is always absent when he doesn’t want to vote the way of Karen Martin, Kerry Woods or on school issues. I like the way he votes most of the time. A nice enough man, doing the best he can, given the crap he has to work with, but no surprise he didn’t vote.
His business is with NASCAR. He was between a rock and a hard place.
Sucks to be him ;)
Agreed.
NASCAR doesn’t allow the use of the confederate flag in any official capacity. Nor does it bar the use of the flag by its fans.
Interestingly, did you happen to read in the paper that the GOP is going to start hitting NASCAR events to register voters?
Nikki Haley will make an out-freaking-standing vice president. You go girl!
Are you daft? What does she bring to the ticket. Not a dang thing. It’s Jeb / Marco baby. Jeb / Marco.
Jeb/Marco ain’t a winning ticket. Even I believe that. I’d be more inclined to vote a Jeb/Haley ticket.
Where is that FEMALE VP. Maybe the time is right. They are both center right – a ticket I could vote for. Not a fan of Bush, but I have a tendency to judge him on the others. Dang – I hope no one judges me based on “the others.” I could go for that ticket.
I don’t believe there has ever been a POTUS and VP form the same state.
I believe it to be against federal election law.
They can be from the same state, but the members of Electoral college can’t vote for a President and VP from their own state. So this would mean the 29 Florida Electors can’t vote for both Bush and Rubio presuming they are still residents of Florida and that the electors are Florida residents also.

Meanwhile:
ILLEGAL KILLS IN SAN FRAN; DEPORTED 5 TIMES’SANCTUARY CITY’
Oh shit. When it comes to REAL Life, the Democrats are big fuck ups. Hope Hillary doesn’t see this. Doesn’t look too good for her, or her terrible party. Sucks to be you!
Once you and your pals are finished going down on each other – come back and post something of interest.
Mommy what does ‘going down on each other mean’? Do we do that?
Looks like the Republican solution of deportation doesn’t work after all.
Was probably under GWB that he was deported and returned five times.
But once you deport someone they never come back, so that’s all we have to do.
We could also spend billions to build a fence, because no one can climb, dig under, swim around, or break through fences.
SCOTUS upholds Obamacare. SCOTUS upholds rights of gays to marry. Deal with Iran coming Friday. Confederate Flag coming down. Must really suck to be thoust!!!!
Three great victories Republicans continue to lament!!!!
Notice how SCOTUS when viewed from a distance looks like SCROTUM.
Wow, now that you mention it, I find it harder to hate SCOTUS now! LMAO!!!
Can you even see your SCOTUS?
Or you could just look at Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
Wow, sexist AND racist. Tell us, Squishy: how do you feel about the Jews?
That’s what you got from me implying Ginsberg looks like a wrinkled up nut sack? You sure are wound up tight aren’t you…
Don’t worry Squishy, I got it. She looks like a …….tum.
Married Gays may end up being less than 1 million. That ruling is about as meaningless as the flag, other than turning a lot more people against you. Iran deal – if there is one – will be reversed in a few months, when we get real leadership, and Obama’s major fuck up on Iran will be used to beat Hillary.
Real leadership. You gonna replace Johnny and Mitch. No!!! Reality check dimwit – that little Congressional review deal the House and Senate passed – says Congressional approval not required. You don’t need 60 votes to approve it stupid, you need 60 votes to kill it. You got sixty Senate votes. Nooooo!!!! And let’s not forget how them exchanges and subsidies is working now, thank you Judge Roberts. Repeat after me – Looooo,ooooo-sserrrrr!!!!
Gas will be $5 a gallon? WRONG
Obamacare will be overturned? WRONG
Gay marriage bans will stay in place? WRONG
The confederate flag will stay? WRONG
No one here is as consistently wrong as you, except for GrandTango, who is in fact posting here still.
Other Pogo predictions that didn’t happen:
1. I’m getting some tonight.
2. Girls dig me.
3. Reagan is still alive.
4. Rocky and Boz think I’m sexy.
Ask your boy Trump how that kind of talk is working out for him? You guys are about to be flushed from the GOP on a national level. Start thinking of a name for your new party of racist….
“last month’s horrific, racially motivated”
Everyone drink!!!
Wow! Squishy is in a good mood. Figured he’d be crying into his Confederate pillow case.
Good mood? Must be liquored up pretty good.
Your mom just left.
She left to find a real man.
Guess you won’t be seeing her for a while.
I really don’t give a shit what happens to the flag, I’m not from ’round here. I just don’t like candy ass liberals.
Would this have happened if a fellow senator wasn’t killed?
Who gives a shit. It was done by a Republican. But I understand your buyer’s remorse. Haley used you leftwing idiots for her advancement, and you get nothing out of it, except looking like obsessed fools, over meaningless issues.
If it’s meaningless, why are you still talking about it? Why is Haley able to use it for her advancement if it means nothing?
Derp derp derp derp derp…
My point was do we have a legislative body that can’t figure out how people are affected by their actions unless it is personal to them? You know, an inability to empathize or to see the validity of another point of view.
While everyone is dying to make this a party/wedge issue. Y’all know it is politics. I am glad SC did the right thing. I am glad it was almost unanimous. I am also glad that Sen. Bright had enough cohunes (sp?) not to pull a filibuster in spite of his rigorous supporters. He (deep breath) at least didn’t kill it. The People were heard.
Celebration time – put your hate aside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvX_5ym_ajI
Do you really think anyone gives a shit how you feel about it?
No offense, but you sound like a broken record of media indoctrination, like most of the stupid asses that agree with FITSNews.
If you thought for yourself, what you say may be meaningful. But you’re just one more in a chorus of idiots.
If you don’t care — why you commenting on my comment? (shrug) Jus’ wonderin’
If it makes them whine I say keep up the good work!
I say we all keep pressing forward. It wasn’t me by a long shot — it was all of us. I thank the media – particularly the Governor, Legislators, FITSNews and other outlets who put the pressure on.
I am a little biased about FITS, because this is a SC blog. People can say what they want to say, but this site DOES matter.
I didn’t say I don’t care about outing idiots. I love that. And that’s what I did.
I said the flag is pretty meaningless, as is what another drone has to say about it.
You’ve commented so many times on this you can’t legitimately claim you think it is meaningless.
I care to know what others feel about it. If it pisses you off I care even more!
speaking of broken records…..
Big shout out to FITSNews for keeping us informed, for driving the flag issue to a closure and the opportunity to argue with those assholes I disagree with. Cheers All!
Here here – three cheers for Wil. Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hooray. Wil when this is over, get us a good indepth on Tom Davis’ efforts to get it done.
Damn I wish I could sell Hot Buttered Popcorn on this site.
I’ll help you set up a fund, but you ain’t no Orville Redenbacher. LOL. I do admire his popcorn campaign.
Well everyone has their dream job.
I’ve already lived my dream job and am enjoying the fruits of my labor.
As we hope to be doing soon. Good for you!!!
Shit Squishy – I thought yours was commenting on FITS :)
It’s a great day in SC!
I bet it is. Another fucking day you don’t have to spend anytime with your kid.
Once again, I appreciate your concern. My husband is off the day – so take those comments, turn them upside down and stuff them — you know where.
Sybil, that’s Grand Tango. Just respond – Bite Me. That gets him all thinking about homo stuff.
I know who you are Rocky. GT still surprises me on occasion, but not in big pic. His trolling controls him.
I think it is cool that you don’t give a shit about being a mother. The flag issue is WAY more important than spending time with our children.
I am gay and don’t have any. Can I raise yours? euwe could be his mommy.
Please refer to him as Max from this moment on. I will accept no more disrespect from you. Stuff it.
Obviously that Rocky isn’t me. Cheers.
Cheers!

Presented with no further comment:
Put up by Democrats. Taken down by Republicans. Give Haley some credit. She did the right thing.
Put up by Democrats who later became Republicans and kept up by Republicans, who refused to listen until confronted by racist murders. The only people who get credit for taking this flag down are buried in Charleston, period.
If they weren’t faced with nine murders and a national party that wants this issue over, no Republican in this state would have lifted one finger to remove the flag.
Do you have a list of the Democrats that switch to the Republican Party after voting to raise the Confederate Flag? Fritz voted to raise the flag but he never changed parties. Publish your list.
Most of the old Republicans in Columbia are former Democrats. It does not matter who put it up, it matters who kept it up. Most the people who voted to put it up are dead. In 1961 not all Democrats were racists but almost all racist were Democrats. In 2015 not all Republicans are racists but allost all racists are Republicans. That is the simple truth of SC politics..
Do you see any Democrats fighting to keep the flag. Do you see any Democrats wanting to take down the African American History Monument. Its just stupid for you people to keep pretending that the Republican party is not the party responsible for that flag still being on the state house grounds. Since 2000 there is have been many requests to take the flag down and every time the Republicans have defeated it. The Democrats have always voted to take it down.
Not always. They voted to put it up. You claim that the racist democrats all became republicans. List the members of the SC General Assembly that made the change and then explain how they continued to cast racist votes after becoming Republicans. Don’t spout the rhetoric unless you can back it up with facts.
It is the current Republicans who have kept the flag flying as part f the Southern strategy. What don’t you people get about that? Who cares who voted to put the flag up 60 years ago. The Republican Party has kept the flag up there for the last two decades.
What point are you trying to make? That black people should be so angry that a bunch of dead Democratic racist put the flag up there, they should ignore the fact a bunch of live Republican racist have been fighting to keep it up there. No one is that stupid. We know with 100% certainty which party is responsible for that flag being where it is today…
It is the Republican vote that is taking it down. There isn’t enough democrat votes to do it. In the last 20 years the democrats haven’t had enough public support to muster the votes to remove it. Democrats deserve all of the blame for putting it up and none of the credit for removing it. What part of that do you not understand. Because, That’s the facts Jack!
So we agree. Democrats have no responsibility for keeping the flag on the state house grounds. They had no power to remove it. Only Republicans could have done that and they refused to do so.
The only thing I disagree with is who gets credit for it coming down now. Those people are buried in Charleston.
They didn’t cast a vote. That is like saying Roof gets the credit. Those that cast the vote get the credit. That is what brought it down.
What party are you now, and what party was your great-grandfather?
I have no idea what party my great-grandfather was. I was not raised in a racist environment and was not subjected to racist views. I grew up in a rural area and I have worked in the fields. I was taught from a young age that I am no better or no worse than anyone else. I was taught personal responsibility. Those values among others make me a conservative and a republican. I can only assume that my ancestors shared the same values and passed them on to me. That would make them republicans. They could never have shared the racist values of the KKK (remember they lived in the reconstruction and Jim Crowe eras) and still have instilled the values in my grand-parents and parents that were instilled in me.
In other words, they were Democrats, and you’re a Republican – spewing Limbaugh, Levin and Fox talking points like a good Sunday meetin’ Southern voter.
The anti-slavery and equality views during his time would have made him a republican. There is historical data that shoes that the Democratic Party endorsed, supported, and condoned racism as a part of their platform. There is no data to show that the Republican Party ever did. You claim that there was a shift. Just because the democrats eased their racist views in the 60’s does not mean that the republican’s strengthened theirs. If you want to brand the republicans as racist because popular opinion suggest that the KKK and other white supremacist groups vote republican then you must label the democrats racist because popular opinion also suggests the New Black Panther Party, Nation of Islam, and other Black Supremacist Groups vote democrat.
No, he doesn’t, because except for Ol’Strom, there were no national Dems who switched. Byrd died a Dem, Hollings will die a Dem.
Hey, since you’re going over there – pics tomorrow?
Definitely, I’ll figure out how to post some from today.
As a professor of history, you got to really love this. It’s not often you can actually watch history and enjoy it at the same time. I’m tired of this who put it up, who took it down. A chance to see an entire Legislature put their petty crap aside for one instance – priceless. Of course next week it will be back to the same old stink.
That’s why I hung around when I got done with my bidness… I was there when the flag came off the roof, when the Wade Hampton was imploded, when il’Papa came to town, for Hootie to still be playing cover music
Upload them as a gallery to postimg.org and then post the link. I’ve been avoiding the area since the nut-jobs keep showing up down there.
Why do you keep putting national in front of Dems(sic). You know full well the change over occurred at the state level not at the national level, in SC.. That along with the Republican base. The Southern strategy worked very well.
Because generally when this issue comes up we are discussing national issues but I’ll play, list the state wide Dems who became Pubs – who actually mattered.
traitor…way to give aid and comfort to the bigoted,American hating leftists!
Wait, are you DIA, NSA, ASA, CID or should you just STFU?
Fuck you RINO clown.Lie in bed with the American hating fools on Fits that seek the destruction of this country.
No worries. You are just another example of why college youth are brainwashed to believe America is evil. That is the ONLY service you have provided to this country.
Touchy, touchy…
No.You are a disgrace.See how the leftists are loving all over you tonight?
Hanoi Jane would be proud.
I guess I must be a disgrace if I have a heartfelt belief about removing a flag that never really flew in our state from a monument that already includes several Confederate flags in its design. No, wait, that makes me a thoughtful, considerate human, capable of rational thought and compromise.
Compromise? Where was the compromise about the flag? Thought that happened in 2000?
This was take it down or we will boycott and burn the fucking state down.
You called for the American Flag to be removed today. I have no doubt you will brainwash another generation of college students to get that done!
In case you missed it, there’s been a boycott, such as it was, for years. No one is threatening to burn anything and in this state going after other monuments would be foolish, though I’d knock Tillman over myself.
My suggestion to take them all down and put the state flag back up has more to do with my belief that Washington is out of control than anything to do with this discussion.
Sit down and shut up. You contribute nothing to this conversation. When you’ve sacrificed you can join the conversation. My guess is, you haven’t.
That means he is losing. Keep on Colonel. You have more patience than I do. Make him look like the *&$# he is.
He’s perfectly capable of making himself look like an ass, he doesn’t need my help.
ain’t that sweet…a socialist professor giving aid and comfort to a dead beat mommy and daddy.
Go figure.Night all.
Nite. May you sleep with abandon!
I have no idea how anything works, man I’m dumb! LMAO!!!
Have your read his (Speak D Truth) timeline? The parties have switched. If you are a Colonel, surely you do know some military history? Strom wasn’t the only one to change. Parties have continued to shift. I am questioning if we are in another shift.
I probably know as much about Ol’Strom as anyone who has ever posted here. Strom is the only major national figure who switched parties as a result the of the Civil Rights Movement.
I doubt it. You know how to advance liberal, leftist causes.
Strom?I posted that fact earlier today while you were pulling your ‘Hands Up-Flag Down’ routine at the state house.
He isn’t the only one, but he did lead the charge.
It is true. Who switched was the next generation. (Didn’t Wallace change?)
No though he did for a time claim to be an independent
In my grad school days at USC I worked for some of the local papers around. One editor was always perplexed as he noticed Lexington County had shifted solidly GOP. And this was early 90s – so the transition was slow at first. I think in the 1970s in SC you voted for the man, not the party. Oh, and whilest I would hate to admit it, ole Fitz was revered in Charleston as a great man.
Fritz is still a great man but he also was the guy who put the flag on the roof and kept it there.
:) Would love to continue this chat, but I’ve got a lot of real work I need to get done including stuff I owe to overseas folks.
Gute Nacht
Once again name the names, there were certainly some but Dems would continue to win in South Carolina until 1996
No I’m saying it was the next generation of folks running for office. I think in the 1980s there was a huge switch of registered voters from DEM to GOP, and that’s what prompted people to run as Republicans. I think the electorate shifted first.
Nope, didn’t happen, Dems controlled the state until 1996
Really? I guess looking at the local level in the early 1990s I saw a lot of GOP folks. But that was the Midlands. Low Country was still pretty Dem.
Uhhhhh, you better check with David Beasley on that one, history major. He at least got it off of the dome, and it cost him his job…
I agree to revise slightly what I said. If they weren’t faced with nine murders and a national party that wants this issue over, no current Republican politician in this state would have lifted one finger to remove the flag.
Agreed. But it did happen. They did die. And nearly all of South Carolina and it’s elected officials acted correctly.
Who gives a flying sack of crap what party the people were who put it up, they put it for a specific reason and we know what that is. What matters is that it’s coming down, and it doesn’t matter what party that was. This constant crap about a Dem put it up and a Repub took it down suggests someone has a guilt complex for leaving it up so long. Now fix the roads.
I agree
I’ll give Tom Davis and the Senate credit. Nikki was just tagging along.
What about FITSnews? I am sure he worked with some political operatives. Maybe even advised given his history in politics. He does deserve some credit. We are discussing the topic on this site ;)
Same ones that elected Tom Ervin and Tom Ravenel. Political winner for Republicans in 2016.
Please! When Will speaks, people listen. He published opinions, but he isn’t a sell out. At least not like the GOP.
They do? I doubt it.Respect his apparent love of family and sobriety.Politically he is lost and trying to destroy people you disagree with is not a career maker. His world view is dysfunctional and all over the board.
I really believe Will has a heart for SC and this country-just got lost somewhere and ain’t been able to figure out who the fuck he is. We all been there.
He Will.
“Will has a heart for SC”
—————————
I agree.
“I really believe Will has a heart for SC and this country-just got lost
somewhere and ain’t been able to figure out who the fuck he is.”
Hopefully he finds out he has too much brain to be a libertarian and too much heart to be a Republican.
When I speak, people facepalm! LMAO!!!
LOL at you idiots who think the Republicans will get ANY credit whatsoever for taking down the flag. The media narrative will be that you “had no choice” and the second Haley signs the bill the focus will shift to tearing down Confederate monuments, and when you object to that the whole “Republicans are Racists” charge will start up again. Tear down the monuments, they’ll give you no credit and start to demand digging up bodies, changing street names, ect. You will never, ever, ever, win this issue, and every “compromise” and outright surrender along the way simply brings the Left one step closer to your eventual destruction (which is their true goal).
A whole lot of GOPer goober voters are going to be spittin’ mad at their weak-kneed turncoat legislators who let a “girl” governor bully them into voting the fair and decent way, just the opposite off what they wanted. Going to be hell to pay.
Last I looked it wasn’t the House in question but the Senate. House seems like a done deal, with little opposition. Those who do oppose are the minority. Chumley — bless his heart, has good intentions of representing the people of his district. He has great potential to be a leader, but he needs to stop following to be a leader. Rep. Henderson sent out an email blast asking for input. There are many HOR, but last account I had, the majority favored moving the flag. It was the Senate in question.
Symbols of racism have no place in a society we aim to create. White people shouldn’t have their images of oppression flying arrogantly in our faces and on the grounds of our government buildings. The north won the civil war, and the victors get to write the history. White people need to let go of their history and their culture and beg forgiveness for their transgressions against non-whites.
It isn’t about who won or lost – it is about those who still live and the ability to move beyond race and hate. The North doesn’t hate the South – I’ve lived both places. It is a minority of the South that hates the North. A fraction of that minority still holds on to the past — can’t let go.
I never knew racism – I mean real racism – until I moved to SC. I know Y’all take pride in being the first to succede. Does anyone really think this a possibility? Be proud of trying, be proud of your heritage, but live today.
It is time to unite, not divide. That flag is divisive. I knew it in the north (barely north) as a rebel sign that we could all relate to. I moved further south and it has a whole new meaning.
It’s time to end this relationship of race baiting IMHO.
I never knew racism – I mean real racism – until I moved to SC.Really?
I bet your home school curricula is something to behold.
Thank God you are on Fits 24/7 and the kid can try and educate itself.
I’ll go with Sybil. Until I moved from the metro Tri-State area – for you hard pressed that’s NYC and essentially the center of the known world – I had never really witnessed true racism. But down in SE Georgia, up here in SC, down in NE FL – it was alive and well. Still is. We might have had race tensions – but not hard core racism. (Well except for loud mouth asshole redneck wannabes from Long Island – but they all work for Fox now.)
I think it lives in pockets everywhere. I was born and raised in SC and had never seen a Klansman in person until I had to go to Wallingford, CT on a work trip. They were having some sort of KKKlown rally on Colony Rd, AKA US 5.
It may live in pockets in some places, but in others it’s more like an epidemic instead of a pocket.
I was in CT for a couple summers, grew up N. of SC. Lived in the South some 30 +/- years. Never saw a KKK member my entire life. Heard about them, but never saw them. Probably a good thing.
Brighton Beach?
All this time I thought I was talking to myself or….(fill in the blank with your favorites FITSNews Troll).
Lee Bright, Harvey Peeler, and Danny Verdin actually represented their voter base.
Let me find you Lee Brights Tea Party Video on YouTube, that so few have viewed. Dear goodness — remember what a strong man of faith he is. smh.
Seems they have removed it? Or I can’t find it even in history. It was pretty sad — listening to the Greenville Tea Party and Lee Bright. Far too many Amens for something so horrible.
What do you have against Lee Bright-besides he is a Christian, loves SC and enjoys spending time with his family?
Sen. Bright was nice enough, willing to respect others views. He made some strange bedfellow friends. He played the Christian card (for the record it is far more offensive to me that one play the Christian card vs. religion). He is a prophet, a psychic even, who blames the government he couldn’t even forecast his own failings.
What do I have against him? Nothing. What do I have for him? Less. He is IMO a hypocrite and a pawn. He is and has been used. He should be mad. Not me. Him. I am disappointed scum of the earth took advantage, claiming that high ground, in an effort to make themselves god. He is just a pawn in a pond of big fish that bite.
I feel a great deal of pity for him. That is all.
In the age of leftist rhetoric controlling the narrative, look not to words for substance as you know they are meaningless, i.e. SCOTUS. Actions count. This will be remembered. Haley is toast. These three at least acknowledge they they are Christian and White, and understand Christians and White people vote for them and actually represent a majority of the voters in their districts.
go back to ohio. your pollutin the state
FITS the stupid full screen pop ups are gonna kill ya’
Fire that ad agency and get a civilized one.
I turned on Ad Block Plus for FITS until that mess goes the way of the dinosaur around here.
Kept up by thug conservatives, finally taken down by cowardly conservatives.
(with some exceptions in the two gaggles of course)
No. No!! I’m a liberal, and so what. Do NOT sully the actions taken today by the Senate as some cowardly conservative ,or thug conservative. What they did today came from their hearts. It came from their respect for a fallen Senator. Do not tarnish what was accomplished today by the people of South Carolina with such rhetoric. Next Monday we can call each other all the names we want, but for today, enjoy the unity of the events.
They changed because the winds changed. Not their hearts. Their powerful masters wanted the change.
And even those hearts that did change, it was because a colleague and personal friend died. Had he not, it would be different.
Celebrate the change, but don’t be naive about the cause.
If love should enter Republican hearts, they would catch fire, and turn into ashes.

If truth were ever uttered from Republican mouths they would gag from the alien unfamiliar taste.
Sorry, I just can’t go that far. I think for a few of them it came from their hears. For others it was a just bending to political pressure. I can celebrate the result, but that’s about it for me. I don’t think there has been any real shift in the way politicians in Columbia view the flag.

I read many news sources. The first effort I saw to take down the flag was published here on FITSNews. Many can dispute it. Haters will hate.
We all come here for a reason. While reasons may vary – FITSNews was the first I saw report on this topic in hopes of removing the confederate flag. Many will take credit, but for those of us who felt it was time to take down the flag – FITS was all over it.
Credit where credit is due.
Why it is coming down (with no criticism implied):

The Southern Summer of Love.
The deciding tally came moments after Senators voted 36-3 against an amendment that would have put the matter to a public vote.
Ahhhhhhhhhh.
Freedom and democracy.
Don’t be a sore loser. I pegged you far more intelligent.
Who do you think you are?You come on here as STNTwist-write TWO ‘Dear Will’ whiny ass letters that contributors are being mean….apologize for that….switch to Garbage…Frank Right and now Sybil-accusing and libeling a tv personality of being KKK and a racist while threatening to release information and files on your political enemies…attacking posters personally and questioning their intelligence(TGB)
Apparently with 6 year-old child wondering-WHERE THE FUCK IS MY MOMMY! LMAO!!!!
Lady you crazy or a drunk!
In your case, we’re going to eliminate crazy.
Thanks Rocky.
I didn’t get to vote on invading Iraq either.
what are you – some kind of liberal?
Can we find out what psychotropic drug Mr. Roof was on and please take it off the market?
And for other pleasant news, Jailbird Jimmie Metts is behind bars. Missed the Lexington Peach Festival and grilling and boozing at Danny’s. I wonder if Jakie will ever go by on visitors’ days.
Six hours have passed since anyone has given Nikki Haley the credit she deserves. No elected official is more responsible for this vote today than Haley. Of course, the nine “Bible Thumpers” who gave their lives and the forgiveness of their families deserve the most credit.
I think Haley did admirably. Sure, I could hem and haw about possible reasons but do not pretend to know her heart. As a governor she said and did just the right things. I think her “stock” has gone way up.
