|| By FITSNEWS || A muscle-bound Sumter, S.C. couple was arrested over the holiday weekend after banishing their fourteen-year-old daughter to live in a tent in the woods for seven days.

Her crime?  Eating a Pop Tart without permission …

The girl was discovered by authorities two days into her “sentence.”

The parents – 33-year-old James Driggers and 36-year-old Crystal Driggers – reportedly gave their daughter a flashlight, a roll of toilet paper, a whistle and a watch.  She was told to report to a fence outside the house at specific times to receive food and water.

That’s where cops found her … during a severe thunderstorm that moved through the area.

Damn …

Here are the “Parent of the Year” nominees …

(Pics: Provided)

Both Driggers will face charges of child neglect … as they should.

As libertarians, we like to give a wide berth when it comes to parental freedom … but seriously: Who leaves their teenage daughter outside during a dangerous thunderstorm?  Over a Pop Tart?

Number 1: West Virginia ain’t dumb fuck. I’m proud to be a West Virginian unlike you. Beats the shit out of being a native South Carolinian I’ll tell you that.
Number 2: I went to my first 3 grades in a two room school house with a potbellied coal stove for heat in the winter and now have 3 degrees and straighten out shit for “professionals’ who thought they knew what they were doing (most of my clients are right here in South Carolina). Nobody was homeschooled back then. it has only become a ‘thing” the last 20 years by people who are afraid of how society presents itself.
Number 3: If you home school your children – help yourself but be aware you are keeping them in a cocoon. One day they will have to face the outside world. Plus I don’t want to hear any shit about you sending them to the local high school for band or sports so you can have the best of two worlds
Number 4: I used to do some tutoring in algebra and chemistry during my college years to supplement my GI Bill
Number 5: My kids are a product of public education. One IS a teacher and the other is an accountant. And they actually rode the bus till they were seniors when I trusted them with an old clunker to drive to school. From what I understand, a lot of South Carolina “mommies” would not DARE to let their precious children ride the bus. Which says a lot about the attitude in South Carolina.
Number 5: From what I’ve seen, conflicts are more about class than race in our neck of the woods. My kids got more shit from the kids at school because they lived in a HOUSE and not a trailer. It was a great life lesson for my children. Can you claim the same??

Yep, my wife worked with a fellow nurse who was homeschooled. Fool put a metal food container in the microwave, nearly burned down the break room, passed out and had to be admitted into the ER…he was currently clocked into. No common sense and painfully awkwards.

Tazmaniac July 6, 2015 at 4:24 pm

Painfully awkward because he had been fed fresh homemade food out of pots and pans?

Can't Fix Stupid July 6, 2015 at 4:26 pm

Painfully awkward because even a 5 year old should know not to stick something metal in the microwave and turn it on.

Tazmaniac July 6, 2015 at 4:31 pm

You may find this hard to believe but some parents care enough about their children to not feed their kids frozen shit in a box, thus no need for a microwave in the home or need to learn the use of one.

Condescending Asshole July 6, 2015 at 4:40 pm

You may find this hard to believe but you can cook something fresh, put the leftovers in the fridge, and microwave them later on.

You may find this hard to believe but parents who feed their kids microwaveable food in all likelihood do, in fact, care about their kids.

You may find this hard to believe but in the year 2015, yes, it is odd as hell for a household not to own and actually use a microwave at some point within an 18 year span of time.

Tisk, tisk July 6, 2015 at 4:39 pm

My grandfather put a gold trimmed teacup in the microwave one time and blew a hole in the side of it. He was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Does that make him stupid too?

Only Idiots Ask Dumb Questions July 6, 2015 at 4:42 pm

Lot of people hating on you but you are absolutely right. Republicans treat home schooling as some sort of trendy and hip way of raising kids. The truth is that many home school children are sheltered as hell and when they are dipped into the real world, the reaction isn’t always normal. Some are super naive, some are super distrusting and closed off, some get into drugs and other off the wall shit as a way of protesting.

I have seen a lot of kids go wild once they got out of their home school crap, especially with super restrictive, religious fundie parents who ban all kinds of “evil” things like video games, TV exposure, toys, and even hanging out with neighborhood kids. Most of the times either they turn out just as crazy as their parents or the exact, extreme opposite.

Yeah – that drug shit happens in these mob rule schools. That is why some of us want to homeschool. Sparkle is close enough to Greenville, to know what Mauldin is – to know the crime rate in Spartanburg, the school rankings don’t mean crap.

I’m not religious. I choose to homeschool because it is a better education that the public schools provide. Some of us do that you know. I also understand the opposite side of that debate, but dear gawd, cannot imagine anyone willing to home school as an escape — that’s just my thoughts.

Home School July 6, 2015 at 4:48 pm

Home schooling isn’t bad in every instance, I just hate when people treat it as some type of purist way of raising your kids. Properly educating and preparing children takes a lot of time, work and focus and not everyone is cut out to do it. What matters is what will result in the best outcome for the child. If you are capable of making home schooling work out that way, absolutely go for it.

Sybil July 6, 2015 at 4:51 pm

I’m certainly no purist. I do it for academic reasons and to a lesser degree safety reason (we live in a fairly safe little rural pocket).

I do disagree with the “purists” but I am not going to bash them, b/c then I lose my rights. I wish more freaking liberals homeschooled – no kidding.

sparklecity July 6, 2015 at 5:57 pm

if you live in a ‘fairly safe little rural pocket” why the fuck are you concerned for their safety????
I don’t ever recall mass shootings/murders at Crenshaw HS in Southcentral LA but at high income schools like Columbine and Sandy Hook and were committed by Caucasian males………..
Matter of fact, if you study it, most of the mass shootings WERE done by Caucasian males 15-30 years of age.
EXCEPT for the Asian kid at Virginia Tech……..or come to think of it that terrible atrocity at the Amish school but I think that was a white guy there too….
if you want safety, put shock collars and GPS ankle bracelets on all unmarried Caucasian males between 12 and 30 years old

“I do it for academic reasons and to a lesser degree safety reason (we live in a fairly safe little rural pocket)” = your direct post as it relates to home schooling
My retort was in reference to the above posting (which you made)
with additional comments concerning what is “safe’ and what might not be “safe”
You seem to be the one with dyslexia……………..

dss July 6, 2015 at 8:29 pm

We homeschooled 3 children. 2 college graduates and one a year away from graduating.

No way you play like this and give your child an education.

sparklecity July 6, 2015 at 7:26 pm

I lived in Greenville for about 5 years from 1975 – 1985.
There’s good about both towns – one good thing about Spartanburg is it’s closer to Charlotte and I can get WXRC-95.7 FM!!!

Sybil July 6, 2015 at 8:22 pm

My youngest child was not even born til 2008 – so an age gap.

I see your comments day in and out. If Greenville/Spartanburg is so great, why don’t you support your Representatives? i.e. Bright, Chumley, Gowdy, Duncan, Henderson and so on? You talk about the SBTP and how much you hate them, but do you ever contact any of your representatives? I have to admit, I find it interesting you even know who SBTP is and have met with Karen, unless you are trolling. I don’t hang with people I disagree with — I’m not much of a creeper.

You come across as liberal. You state you are from WV. Maybe you are – but you are quick to call others out. If I know one thing from my experience in politics – those quickest to call others out – they are usually playing in the same pond. What pond are you playing in? What game are you playing?

Your comments change more than mine and I pretend Sybil – who are you playing?

sparklecity July 6, 2015 at 10:42 pm

I ain’t role playing shit nor playing any childish games – I’m no one but myself and a native of a community south of Bluefield (I’m first generation non coal miner – my father and both grandfathers and others as far back as the late 1890’s were Appalachian coal miners WAY before the textiles came to GSP…)
I am no one but the fastest group of political entities….an INDEPENDENT who thinks for him/her self. Not someone who drinks the Kool-Aid (be it liberal OR conservative) like you appear to do. I detest the hard left just as much as I detest the hard right
Gowdy & Bright??? Are you serious??????
Gowdy (who is out for only Gowdy) & Bright (a demagogue and all around piece of work who threw his constituients under the bus in northern Spartanburg County and WAS my state senator before he played the biggest switch-a-roo in recent times – now we are stuck with that worthless Tom Corbin who is about as effective as teats on a bull) are the only ones in my district area besides Rep. Doug Brannon (who I have met & talked to on several occasions and is an OK guy). I don’t give a rats ass about that dipshit Duncan. Chumley & Henderson likewise- they are not representatives in my area – so why should I have any intercourse with them? From what I have read/heard about Duncan I have absolutely no desire to ever meet him (I can’t stand fakes or phonies)
I’ve seen Gowdy behind closed doors and I know of what I post. I talked with Bright a number of times when he WAS my state senator and quickly realized what a worthless piece of dung he is and is no doubt a pawn for the SBTP. Plus I personally know some of his relatives who would not vote for him for Venereal Disease Inspector (let alone dog catcher).
SBTP??? – don’t hate them whatsoever. It’s just good practice to understand political groups who try to run the whole fucking county (and are doing a pretty good job at it).and point out what they are doing behind the scenes for their political and social engineering agenda. As far as I’m concerned they are no different from the liberals they slam at every occasion when it comes to technique and delivery (probably better here in Spartanburg County since there are NO liberals to speak of – just different degrees of conservative “purists” who argue/fight about who is the most “pure”).
That’s why I attend their meetings from time to time…………I just keep my mouth shut, exchange pleasantries, sit on my hands and listen and observe then report as I feel necessary……….

Sybil July 6, 2015 at 11:02 pm

Seven days seems extreme, but the kid should looked at it as a vacation from her steriod addled parents. I see the part where the parents are unlikeable based on their douchey pictures, but they did provide the essentials and not wanting your kid to eat junk food is not equal to child abuse. Michelle Obama bullies kids all across America’s lunchrooms and the press lauds her for it.

I don’t know about “Libertarian” readers, but as libertarian readers go, I’ll just say that violations of “natural law” are not so clear….and that’s what we are dealing with here.

Social/cultural norms are ridiculous to try to codify…but from a libertarian perspective if someone want to step up to the plate and care for the teenage girl, and the parents don’t give a shit(and they might not), that would be an option in a libertarian society.

But, because we aren’t living in a libertarian society, people call the police hoping they and the justus system will rectify the violation of natural law with codified government law….sometimes it works…sometimes it doesn’t.

Or locked up with CPS who truly doesn’t give a shit – it’s a paycheck for most of them. Let’s expand all these government entities and listen to them complain about the lack of adoption/foster care, while children – DIE in their care.

Some literal, some figurative – the end result is the same. Slap them on the hand, tell them what they did was wrong – release them and give their child back. Unless, of course, you are volunteering your tax dollars, your time, your efforts or you want to adopt a 14 year old.

Liberalism has produced, selfish, self-centered, self absorbed and media-led parents. You have attacked everything that is traditional family as prudent, backward, while labelling fathers as child-molesters and wifedom as if it were a prison sentence.
The children you don’t abort, you abuse, or you ruin them in your image.
So don’t feign outrage when the monsters you, and your political dogma have produced reveal themselves. This is your America. Enjoy it. You deserve it.

As a contrarian — what is going to happen to these children. Have you or anyone you have known lost children to DSS? I’ve never lost one, but I know many who have via the internet and some personal via others.

It is horrible and wrong what they did with that kid. It is even more wrong that the kid is likely removed from a family it loves, put in a system that could care even less about them. Stay on top of this story, because it is my personal opinion if the child is given back to the family, will likely be nothing like them. If it becomes part of the system – no one to love, that is even worse.

Reply
nitrat July 6, 2015 at 4:33 pm

DSS always tries to find a family placement first, before they are placed in a foster home.
The only problem with that is that the family placement is in the families that created the parents.

Only a lawyer would think that all ills of society can be cured with yet another law/rule.

Reply

Let’s see.

To do this, you would need government politicians to pass a law, government workers to come up with a form for claiming your tax break, government workers to process your tax break claim so you could get your refund, government auditors to make sure you weren’t committing fraud, and government cops to occasionally arrest people for engaging in vigilante justice.

No bureaucracy?

False. We CUT 99.95% of the tax collection budget. Then, we contract out tax collection to private companies that will get a percentage of tax fraud that they catch.
