SLED INVESTIGATING …

|| By FITSNEWS || Nine South Carolina lawmakers have reported receiving threatening comments to law enforcement officials in anticipation of next week’s big vote on whether to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the S.C. State House.

According to reporters Doug Pardue and Cynthia Roldan of The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier, these threats are being investigated by the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Do any of the threats sound serious?

No …

From Pardue and Roldan’s story …

Six of the perceived threats were to House members and three to Senators. At this point, he said, SLED has not determined any of them to be criminal – “just harassing comments, people sounding off… Letting them know they are not going to vote for them again.”

The flag debate has arisen in the aftermath of the horrific, racially motivated “Holy City Massacre,” the mass murder of nine black churchgoers at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C.  There, nine black parishioners – including S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor – were gunned down by Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist.

Having overwhelmingly agreed to address the issue, the S.C. Senate will begin debating a resolution to bring the flag down this coming Monday – July 6.  That measure is expected to clear the Senate the following day and be sent over to the S.C. House of Representatives – which is expected to approve it no later than July 8.

While the measure has overwhelming support in both chambers, there is opposition.

And volatility ….

We support removing the flag.  In fact lawmakers are pretty much following to the letter our recommendation for taking it down.

Let’s hope they follow through.

The Palmetto State has no shortage of serious economic, academic and quality of life issues in desperate need of addressing.  And we need to address them together …

Squishy123 July 2, 2015 at 6:47 pm

Someone has to even out the vandalism to statues, flags, portraits, etc… that the Occupy-type crowd is doing. Do you think that’s helping your side? Do you think that’s not pissing off people who’s votes actually count?

Keep it up July 2, 2015 at 7:57 pm

Yes, it is helping. Especially on the national level, so keep talking.

Squishy123 July 2, 2015 at 8:22 pm

Only one problem, it isn’t the nation that’s casting votes.

Keep it up July 3, 2015 at 4:10 pm

The rest of the nation is doing a very effective job of telling our leaders what to do. And they are listening and obeying. You racists are being driven farther and further into the margins. Your latest hero, Trump, is learning that right now. So much fun to watch :-)

If those voters are getting pissed off…somebody is doing something right.

Sooner or later this state is going to need to knuckle drag out of the 1800s and into modern times.

Again with the incomplete picture of past politics.

The D’s of yesteryear are not the D’s of today, just as the R’s of yesteryear are not the R’s of today.

The easiest way to explain it (in terms you can understand) is when professional wrestlers change from being the good guys to join up on the bad side and vice versa.

You should really do some solid research on the Nixonian “Southern Strategy” in the midst of the 60’s civil rights movement to understand how the South flipped from racist D’s to racist R’s. They are still the same racists they always were but with different letters after their name.

The flag is shorter than the monument, and both are way shorter than the buildings across the street. It’s a trick of angle and perspective to give the appearance of the flag soaring of the capital and all of downtown Columbia. Not taking sides on the issue but these pictures aren’t accurate and are causing some of the animosity, especially by people outside of the State that have never seen any of it in person and maybe never seen an accurate picture.

Reply
Sybil July 2, 2015 at 9:59 pm

I understand the perspectives. I’ve never been a fan of the flag. Years ago, I stated as much, but I digressed and left it to the people to decide. They didn’t. I was was born in what they call the most northern southern state, and the most southern northern state. I have live most of my life in the south — my husband is born and bred here. I have two children born here. I have lived in the south some 30 years +/-.

I view things differently than some who are born here. I never liked the flag flying on capital grounds, but said little. I felt it was inappropriate. A great divide — unnecessary. In light of recent event, I feel more strongly than ever it is time to put it in a museum. I respect southern heritage – all my immediate and some distant family live here. I just hate – the hate.

Over a flag? Over a monument? They have a better resting place in a museum where viewer that want to see and appreciate that can do so, not as a sign of division. That is my personal opinion.

truthmonger July 3, 2015 at 1:54 pm

A couple points… Not “treason”. Rebellion, probably, but treason is a specific charge not applicable to the CSA.

Four states in the Union continued to hold slaves until AFTER the war. Given that you actually had slave states fighting on the side of the Union, The war could NOT have been primarily about abolishing slavery. In fact, Lincoln himself made a comment about he would allow slavery to continue if it meant preserving the Union.

Slavery as an institution was already dying a richly deserved death in the 1860’s. It was generally accepted throughout Europe that a major cause of the Civil War was the Morrill tariff of 1860, which had a severe effect on the Southern economy. Don’t let history get in the way of your histrionics, Limbaughsaphatkhunt.

Not to be disagreeable – the will of the people may be prevailing and it may be time to amend the constitution, but as it stands many ruling IMO are outside the constitution. Maybe it is the will of the people?

I am no constitutional expert, but I am of some opinion we are not following the constitution. In the cases it is declared constitutional, the media picks up a different flavor.

As long as we have this back and forth, there will be no respect for the constitution, no respect for individuals, no respect for the law.

I can understand why, but we are setting a dangerous precedent.

Reply
Limbaughsaphatkhunt July 2, 2015 at 10:03 pm

No disagreeable nature taken.

However, what we’re talking about is the constitutionality of modern day questions the founders could never have anticipated. Hence, the creation of the 3 branches of gov’t.

Let’s pretend that S.C. decided (by popular vote) that we wanted to make slavery legal again (pretending the 13th amendment was never created). The will of the people would have spoken…but is that constitutional? State’s can’t just pass laws on majority rule and expect to get away with it if they don’t pass constitutional muster….which is when the Supreme Court steps in.

Reply
Sybil July 2, 2015 at 10:09 pm

But is the Supreme Court Ruling According to the law of the land? I dunno. The ruling is fine by me, but states do have a right – what does the Bill of Rights mean? Isn’t that part of the constitution?

How are you going to feel when it goes against what you believe and they decide it is the rule of the land? It sets a very dangerous precedence. That balance scale is melted and stretched — one day it will swing the other way.

I do agree is it a framework, but I also believe that when we allow our personal views to get in the way of that framework, we are no better than a dictatorship. Has nothing to do with how I want them to rule, it has everything to do with belief in the system.

there’s something called the supremacy clause. Established and cemented after the civil war. It basically says that states can only get away with so much but the Feds ultimately are in control.

In the case of slavery -let us pretend that the SCOTUS ruled differently. Would it make a difference in your views?

I’m simply saying – it has potential to swing the opposite direction. In ways no man intended.

I figure the fondling fathers didn’t reckon on the problems interpreting the Constitution would cause.

When we sentence a man to death for a crime he didn’t commit, we are still bound to the decision of the twelve who made that mistake, and the common way the prosecutors handle that is “Mistakes happen.”

Sybil July 2, 2015 at 10:26 pm

Those are symptoms and certainly encompass come of my fears. What is the solution? It is my opinion a constitutional amendment, but as I have repeatedly said — I am no constitutional lawyer and certainly not a member of SCOTUS.

“Mistakes” do happen, but it our job to be vigilant and look to the future in hopes we can avoid those mistakes, think outside the box, instead of waiting an reacting.

Please pardon quick response, my little one was staying with in-laws and wanted to come home, so abrupt response.

Every convicted criminal says he didn’t do it – let’s address that first. It is my strong opinion in many cases they do not. DNA evidence has proven that in the case of murder. But those aren’t the cases I am really talking about. Let’s talk about those….

Many people are in prison, with a low bond, who cannot afford bail. I am certain to get the shit kicked out of me for admission, but it is important people understand. I was, I think 19 (maybe 18?), I worked two jobs. I had a friend that I grew up with. She had a horrible childhood. We grew up in the white trailer trash neighborhood. She was horribly abused. I tried to help. I gave her money to feed her baby and whatever I could spare.

One night she invited me out. My friends had warned me about her, but I knew her most my life? I went. Long and short, she was hooked on opiates. I did not know. She threatened to kill her baby, who was with us, not the first time I heard that. To shorten a very lengthy story — she weighed some 250-300 lbs or so. I was barely weighing in at 100 lbs +/- 10 lbs.

We went to check on a dog, so to speak. Her baby cried. She was in a mad rage, threatened to kill the baby. All I did was catch up to her, plead with her and upon realizing she was beyond reason, I shoved her down. I was charged with assault and battery. I didn’t have the money to fight it, nor the desire to stay in jail.

Fast forward, several years later, she is still addicted — I had not spoken with her for years. We knew the same people. She stood in the middle of a house party and stabbed her husband through the heart with a FREAKING butcher knife. He died instantly.

Last I heard, she got off on insanity (some 25+/- years ago), she never spent a day in jail, but house arrest — to my knowledge.

Yet, I had an assault/battery charge on my record simply because I had no money to pay. I DID curse at her and I admitted that – assault. I DID shove her down – battery. Nothing else mattered.

Good point. It’s like a coin toss. Conservatives are livid about Obamacare and Gay marriage. I’m livid about citizens united and the voting rights act…as well as epa mercury ruling.

The supremes will never be able to please all the people all the time. They render decisions that only please some people some of the time. At that point, it’s up to congress to pass something (really an amendment to the constitution) and hope the prez signs it.

checks and balances.

What if the Supreme Court decided that slavery was legal even in Free states? Anyone here of Drew Scott?
The courts can be more dangerous than the voters.

Just so TBG understands…

If a voter calls his/her/its representative and *threatens* to vote against them in an upcoming election if they vote a certain way on a specific issue; it gets investigated by SLED?

What a brave new world we are privileged to live in!

The flag is coming down. Economic and political power is against it now. No matter how much the impotent flag-fellators post or whine about the American flag, Lincoln, Yankee traders, the slave states’ struggle to sustain slavery (Civil War), Washington, Jefferson, and all the rest of their immaterial drivel, the flag is coming down.

Heck, their ancestors would have hated the flagelists now being Republicans far more than the defeated banner being finally furled.

But please keep whining. The flag was kept up to be a slap to black Americans. It’s kind of fun to see the tables turned. Whine on.

All the closet lawmakers who support the flag are sweating it right now cause they know they are about to get voted out of office.

Who will replace them?
Surely, even SCGOP voters are smart enough to know that the SC business community is leading this charge and they will not allow anyone to be elected on the promise to put that flag back up after it is down.

Have you had your robo-call from “The Conservative Response Team” yet? Some whiney-ass cracker is growling in your ear that the liberal left is planning to tear down the monuments and dig up the graves unless you contact your representative and urge them to vote against removing the flag from the statehouse grounds.

They have even taken The Dukes of Hazzard off TV
