WILL HE FOLLOW THROUGH WITH IT?

|| By FITSNEWS ||  A few days before the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its ruling affirming gay marriage across the country, Christian pastor Rick Scarborough vowed to self-immolate if the justices ruled in favor of same sex unions.

For those of you educated in a government-run school in South Carolina, self-immolate means “set yourself on fire.”

“We are not going to bow, we are not going to bend, and if necessary, we will burn,” the 65-year-old from Houston, Texas said.

According to Scarborough, the court’s ruling is the latest manifestation of a Satanic plot.

“The end game is the complete destruction of the church of the Lord Jesus, the replacement of it with this liberal theology that’s not a theology, it’s a philosophy, human-made, it goes back to the Garden of Eden when Satan wanted to be God,” he said.  “We now have a race of humans that don’t want to acknowledge that there’s a God.”

Hmmmm …

So … will he go through with his promised one-man bonfire?

Our guess is “no,” but we shall see …

As this website has stated repeatedly, we support the “right of refusal” for Scarborough and other religious leaders when it comes to performing same-sex marriages.  No church should ever be compelled to perform a ceremony it doesn’t want to perform.  Having said that, no government – local, state or federal – should ever tell a church it is prohibited from marrying consenting adults (gay, straight or plural).

In other words the marriage business is one of many facets of our society government just needs to get out of altogether …

He’s from Texas. That explains it all.

idcydm June 26, 2015 at 4:13 pm

If he had been from anywhere else would that explain it also?

afmajret June 26, 2015 at 4:42 pm

No, then the explanation would be he was just plain nuts. But given he is from Texas, calling him nuts would be redundant.

SCBlues June 26, 2015 at 5:37 pm

If he had been from South Carolina that would also explain it.

idcydm June 26, 2015 at 8:22 pm

Of course you would believe that.

euwe max June 26, 2015 at 9:03 pm

of course… and why not?

idcydm June 26, 2015 at 9:11 pm

No need to explain it to you, you already know.

SCBlues June 26, 2015 at 10:40 pm

Well, you live here don’t you?

idcydm June 26, 2015 at 11:33 pm

No I don’t, you seem to think where a person lives explains why they would do something extreme. I, like you can live anywhere we wish in the US. I like living in SC don’t you, if not why do you live here?

SCBlues June 27, 2015 at 5:33 am

Where did I say I did not like living in SC?

idcydm June 27, 2015 at 9:54 am

Where did you say you do like living in SC?

See, it’s easier to ask a question than answer one, but then you already know that.

nitrat June 26, 2015 at 6:33 pm

No. Only the home of Louis Gohmert, Ted Cruz and Rick Perry could explain it.

I don’t find a lot of disagreement in that debate – omitted one word “might” — your point isn’t clear. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on topic.

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 5:07 pm

Gotcha!

Liberals are bullies of hate! June 26, 2015 at 4:54 pm

The left is assaulting American culture and corrupting it, yet you seek out this poor guy and attack him, on your biggest day? I thought you were a party of love, and now all your dreams would come true since you got your way. I think this offensive against this man just shows you are really only an aggressive machine of hate, and you’ll just keep pushing until you destroy your political enemies. Or, until someone stands and fights back. Then you will cry and gnash teeth. But hopefully only your impotent gods will hear your pleas, as your come-uppance is delivered with the same force with which you have struck.

Dan June 26, 2015 at 5:17 pm

Get used to it – for way to long you have defined what the ‘American Way of Life’ was – now we will redefine it and include brown, black, gay, lesbian and progressive secularists.

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 5:20 pm

I call it individual right unless they infringe upon other rights. Fear turns to anger — but eventually fear dissipates when people overcome their fears.

SCBlues June 26, 2015 at 5:38 pm

Most around here do not want to overcome their fears – they thrive on fear and prejudice and bigotry – that is why Fox “News” has such good ratings.

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 5:45 pm

I used to listen to Fox – I “thought” I was one of them. You know the ironic thing about it? The very people I was lobbying for, had the most hateful audience – they attacked me, even though I “thought” I was one of them. They proved me wrong. I’m glad they did.

I really had nothing in common. It just took me time to realize it. O’Reilly was one of my favorites, but Judge was too – a conflict of interest. Thankfully I didn’t listen long — now I have to listen to family go on and on about the Fox talking points.

I cannot fathom anything more painful to listen to — except FOX.

You are old and boring June 26, 2015 at 7:18 pm

No, you thought you were one of us. But when you go proclaiming any despicable whim the media indoctrinates you with, as Gospel, it shows that you are really just a moldable pawn, like the rest of the Democrat drones. And when you are revealed, you hate us for pointing out how weak and ignorant you are. There are many like you, who live simply for the approval of others, no matter how wrong and corrupt they are.

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 7:42 pm

Kerry – you are far older, uglier and definitely more boring. Explains why that is your sole source. Carry on.

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 7:54 pm

I once again feel inclined to indulge your grievances. You expressed the idea that I was a conformist. You are fishing. You want to know. You are dying to figure out the populace in general. I am one of the few, you can’t quite put a finger on. So you call me name. We argue. We both lose.

I don’t live for the approval of other. I am a non-conformist. I don’t move with main stream politics. I am part of the silent majority who found a voice. I don’t require your approval. I don’t require your audience. I certainly do not require your judgment.

You want to know what mainstream voters are interested in? That is why you hound me. Why else? Save I know who you are. I might destroy your candidate. No, what you want to know is real people think.

We think like you, except we don’t get paid. We are The People you want to ignore. Some of us rich. Some of us poor. We refuse to conform. That is what you hate.

I will abide by the laws, the government can require that. They cannot require me to change my mind about how I feel about those laws.

I have plenty left to say. The old and boring is you. Only you can change that. Don’t expect me to conform to your views of the world Kerry. I won’t. Your’s is selfish. You don’t give a shit about people or candidates unless they lace you wallet. Call it what it is.

Used because you're ignorant June 26, 2015 at 8:23 pm

In the end, you elect the corrupt and the same old failed Democrats. You are stupid and easy to manipulate. But they will smile at you, and make you feel special, as long as you heel when they tell you what to do. And to get your head patted, you’ll do anything they tell you to. You are as old as creation.

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 8:36 pm

The only idiot on this page is you Kerry. You don’t know my voting record, you are guessing. You don’t know my values, you are guessing. I feel special with my family, I do not require your approval or acknowledgement.

I do not heel, I do not concede to another man’s whim – that is exactly why you hate me. You want me to heel to your whims. You want to be the Ayn Rand of the world, but I refuse to allow you to pat me on the head. I do not require your approval and that is what pisses you off.

You want to be in control and I won’t allow it. You know it. I know it. Get over yourself.

Bible Thumper June 26, 2015 at 5:30 pm

When I read a story like this, I’m reminded why I chose Bible Thumper as my screen name. Most pastors today are going about there duties of bible study, weddings, funerals, visiting the sick or youth retreats. You will never ever suspect that they do such things if your only information comes the news and entertainment media unless a racist enters a church and guns them down while they are doing it..

Frank Right June 26, 2015 at 6:12 pm

I wish I had your faith. My life would be easier. It once was. I never expected people to do those things — but they did. I can still do those things on my own accord, weddings, funerals, visit the sick or youth retreats. I just don’t need to be lead anymore. I do respect those who have faith. I think it is a good way to live your life. Honestly. I wish I still did believe. It was comforting. The world was beautiful and if it wasn’t, I had hope that even if I died, it would still be beautiful.

I will never forget the words of a priest when I decided to attend classes to become a Catholic in my early years. I had many questions for the young priest. One of his responses surprised me, paraphrasing, “if the Catholic Church were to vote on that today, I think their position would be different.” He went on to describe how religion changed over the years.

I had already done a great deal of studying myself, but was looking for a home (metaphorically). I have studied even more, and over time, I have similar values — absent hate. I am also more inclined to look at mother nature. The universe. Concrete answers.

It isn’t without a lot of heartache. Letting go of strong held beliefs. I still pray, but my opinions have changed so much with politics — the dark side.

euwe max June 27, 2015 at 12:01 am

Never have.

Though computers are both a hobby and a career for me, I also play chess. I don’t really allocate much time to chess anymore, but at one time I played in tournaments, and even managed to win money. I drifted away from playing tournament chess, because to improve, one has to study, and practice. So now, I play skittles – 5 minute chess with a clock – when I feel the need to play the game. I have beaten chess masters with a handicap, and regularly beat experts without one. You don’t want to stand too close to the table when I’m playing out the last few seconds of a hotly contested game – a piece might put your eye out!

Frank Right June 27, 2015 at 12:25 am

I do like chess, but I’m not the best. Lacked a poker face, but did get better over time.

We never had money for games like chess growing up. I didn’t learn to play until late 20’s early 30’s, but wasn’t half bad. I beat my mentor soon after being taught –to hide my excitement.

I’m no Bobby and I’ll never take anyone’s eye out with a piece, but I do enjoy the game.

euwe max June 27, 2015 at 12:42 am

I do like chess, but I’m not the best.
——-
Well then, …*harumph*… we should arrange a contest… with a modest purse – to increase the excitement, of course… I have a table with the board facing an Eastern window, and a Cohiba Black ready, for just such an occasion!

Frank Right June 27, 2015 at 12:59 am

Ha! *harumph* — I’ve got my own, Ivory and black board, red and black pieces. It was one of the first expensive games I committed to purchase years ago. I haven’t played in several years, it’s collecting dust. I have a table that could face a lake cove. I need practice since you won’t help. Hard Ass! Time to practice.

I will say this. My strong point is typically literature and every form of creative writing. You best me every day of the week. I have to freaking Google many of your words. i.e. *harumph*

For me, a Jaques Staunton chess set is *the* chess set. I had a Drueke Chess table, but alas, time wore its cherry wood ass out… and then I got a nifty wooden board – again, too hard on it – and now a simple vinyl roll-up board.

These are the pieces I have:

euwe max June 27, 2015 at 11:10 am

Yeah, and with years of use, it gets impregnated with pizza and assorted greases and other exotic esters. It changes the color of the boxwood pieces so that they’re more “earthy” looking…

…and the constant banging of the pieces together during a capture wears the shine off the ebony pieces, giving them some texture from the dark brown wood beneath the shine.

The result is chess pieces that look “aged,” like a good pair of jeans, soft and smooth to the touch.

It was hard on me breaking them in.. finding some of the sharp points from the queen’s crown in the bottom of the box… the tip of a knights ear.. but now… now, it has a unique character that fits with how it’s being used.

I’m sure you will find this funny, but at one time I play in a D&D tournament. I think it was GenCon? Haven’t played in years, but I loved D&D! Imagination at the height of creative thought. The problem with tournaments – most those guys were nuts. When I play a character, I just trash talk. As a bard, I don’t sing, and my favorite character assassin – I damn sure didn’t kill anyone. Hard to win a tournament with hardcore players who really do sing and act.

Frank Right June 27, 2015 at 11:16 am

D&D = Dungeons and Dragons, a roleplaying game. GenCon is a gaming convention. Some people take it really serious. I only went once, it was a little over the top.

euwe max June 27, 2015 at 12:28 am

When a person’s ideology is shattered by the reality of events beyond his control, the levee breaks, and the arguments of his opponents flood the plains and wash away his house… he can’t shake his fist at the sky, and curse God – so as a foot-stomping, immature child faced with that possibility, threatens to “run away” or harm himself in some way.. .”I’ll kill myself!”

When their neat little world is threatened with change, they “have faith” that God will not “allow” it, and assure others that God will not sit idly by, but through some miracle, will preserve His honor. Not to believe that would be making God a lesser God, and might cause you to miss the celebration when He comes through to save the day. Don’t be weak, have faith – bad things won’t happen if we pray together.

When, inevitably, they are left holding the bag, they lash out at Satan, his minions, and the damned – and, ironically, their fellow Christians, for not “having faith,” and leaving the battlefield in defeat instead of fighting to the death.

For baptists, it has always been a 45 record with the beatitudes on the ‘A’ side, and everlasting torment on the ‘B’ side – and when the fire in their hearts burns hot with righteous anger against the sinners who plague their flock – they put the ‘B’ side in and turn up the volume.

The flames in their eyes promise retribution by God Himself, for the insolence of ignoring his prophet – they see themselves as His holy, anointed representative – and mocking his warnings.

Personally, I figure God is bad enough and ugly enough to take care of His business without our running around lighting crosses and picketing funerals. I guess they don’t read the bible much.. for it is written But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

That verse is so nice, it’s printed twice.

…and here endeth the lesson.

Frank Right June 27, 2015 at 12:37 am

I always seems to be on the ‘B” side no matter how much I pray, what good deeds I do, nor what is in my heart. Never good enough. I’ve decided not to be judged by man, but do respect those who have faith.

euwe max June 27, 2015 at 12:51 am

There is no ‘B’ side, and no matter how much we pray, what good deeds we do, nor what is in our heart can make us “good.” That’s what defines us. Never purified, always purifying.. always striving, never arriving..

Our goal is not to be satisfied with ourselves… but to be engaged in the work we began in earnest, *not* to be satisfied with ourselves.. and in so doing, receive peace and happiness.

There’s no way to express the perspective attained through really seeing that life is the highest good – you have to yearn for it, and care for it wherever you find it.

Only in *that* work, can you see how miserable your efforts *really* are, and how trivial the world is by comparison.

Dare I say, not for the weak of heart?

Frank Right June 27, 2015 at 1:05 am

What philosophy do you follow? I’ve read and read and read and read some more. You summed up something like what I believe.

I am never satisfied – never feel it is enough (my actions) – always searching. I’ve came to the conclusion there may never be answers in my life time. I am now looking to science to answer my questions. My current ‘job’ is just to do the best I can and find some comfort in that.

It is not for the weak of heart. It is earth shattering.

euwe max June 27, 2015 at 3:19 am

What philosophy do you follow?

——

It’s not a philosophy that I follow. Philosophy, to me, is an attempt to explain “what’s going on.” How do you follow that? Everything we define changes. A crude representation is sculpted and polished by constant observation, refining it towards a perfection that the representation can never achieve. We use that representation in the hopes that others have experienced it too…or at least have experienced the constituent parts, and can get some taste of what it’s like.

The closest we can get to representing reality is to experience it. Without that, we’re always thinking “well, it’s like water…” or “well, it’s more like a smooth stone,” trying to relate it to things we have experienced. That might do for some purposes, but without the realization that’s what’s “going on,” progress towards “getting it” is likely to stop.

Listening to someone else might help you to focus on an experience, to relive it with a different perspective. But without that primary experience, being told about it is iffy.

I guess what I’m saying is – no one can experience life for you, or tell you if you’re “doing the wrong thing,” – though the doors to our minds are continually under assault by people who desperately *want* to.

In the end, each of us experiences reality and interprets what it means. That’s our private, and unique reality. There’s no escape from that – even if you submit willingly to a cult to be brainwashed.

My own experiences seem to indicate that life is the most important thing, and that being conscious of that implies a responsibility towards it.

Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

who is my neighbor?

A Muslim was on his way to temple, and some Republicans ambushed him, beat the shit out of him and ran off.

As he was laying there, A Democrat passed by, and seeing it, thought – damn! that must be a terrorist! and hurried on by.

Then Pat Robertson walked by, and seeing it, said “Your troubles are retribution from God for what Muslims have done,” and skulked off.

Then a liberal with no religious beliefs walked by, and seeing it, put out his joint, and said “Dude! What the fuck happened to *you*?” He helped him to his feet, and down the street to the urgent care medical clinic. The nurse asked the guy if he has insurance, and he can’t speak English. The liberal, without thinking, says “hey! can’t you see this guy’s fucked up?” and puts his credit card under the window – put anything he needs on that! I’ve got some shit to do… patch him up, whatever he needs, and I’ll be back later.

Which now of these three, do you think, was neighbor unto him that fell among the Republicans? He that showed mercy to him. Go, and do thou likewise.

The way I see it, all you have to do is look at a tree, a minnow, a puppy, a 4 year old child or even a snake (let alone look through a microscope at protozoa or bacteria as I do on a daily basis) and say “Dear God don’t let us fuck up the gifts you have so kindly bestowed upon us and please protect the innocent of this world because it’s not their fault but the ignorance and arrogance of man”
You really don’t need a church to understand or believe.
But “Bible Thumper” is right – only ones that make headlines are the Christian equivalent of the ayatollahs. Not the priests, ministers, and Rabbis that go about truly doing the Lord’s work and ain’t in it for control.
it’s one thing to be the shepherd of the flock and another thing to bend the flock to your will by threats (from within or without) and preaching that the end of the world is fast approaching and repeating the same old sermon for the next 50 years.
Two sermons I will never forget were delivered by two different priests when I was a boy. One priest told us were all going to hell if we did not follow his example (that one scared the shit out of me) a few years later another priest (who had been a POW in the hell of a Japanese POW camp) gave the kindest, full of goodness sermon I have ever heard. it was like being taken by the hand and shown how to live a life that Christ wants us to live not being damned to hell within the next 5 minutes if I didn’t “get my mind right”
Which one do you think I have tried to live my life by?

Hell, I ‘ll even get him some some ethanol free premium gas if that will help expedite this process…

Every month in “Air Force” magazine is a page of quotes titled “Verbatim”
The one I vividly remember was from one Air Force general or other official that went something like this:
“Religious extremism (no matter what the religion) is a greater threat to individual liberty than Communism will ever be”
I am reminded of that quote when I read or hear of someone like “Pastor” Rick Scarborough………..

Has he torched himself yet? Will Fox News cover it?

White churches are not allowed to bar black folks from becoming members bc it is against the law to discriminate on the basis of color. It would be interesting to see a lawsuit against a church who refused to marry a black woman to a white man. And at some point, LGBTQ becomes a protected class and it will be illegal for a church to refuse an LGBTQ marriage. Just sayin…

Mom June 28, 2015 at 5:28 pm

And yes, we all have dear friends, co-workers and relatives who identify as LGBTQ. But all the Bibles in the pews at my church leave no question that homosexuality is a sin.

Jack June 29, 2015 at 1:08 am

All those Bibles also say remarriage after Divorce is a sin. But I don’t see a lot of “Christians” getting upset about all the adulterers in their midst. And yes I used quotes because I don’t think you guys are very good at being Christian. I think you pretty much ignore 90% of what Christ said.

Mom June 29, 2015 at 10:09 am

Yup. And the Bibles in the pews at my church are specific about divorce too. Many pastors refuse to marry divorced pp.
And many evangelical churches do not allow divorced pp to serve in leadership capacities. That’s not what you wanted to hear, is it?

Jack June 29, 2015 at 7:22 pm

Because you are wrong. Very few evangelical churches do any of those things. My family on my mother’s side are all small town Baptists in small town churches. Four to be exact. I asked,. None of their churches restrict participation by divorced people, or say divorced people can’t receive communion; or tell divorced people they must repent and leave their second spouse or leave the church. In fact the vast majority of churches don’t even ask new members if they are divorced and remarried.

My Uncle divorced my aunt and remarried, his secretary. His father was a Baptist minister for 65 years. He has been a Deacon in that same church he grew up in for years. What you say is just not true except in very rare circumstances.

Have you seen any bakers refusing to bake cakes for second marriages? Have you seen any courts refusing to grant marriage license to second marriages on religious grounds? Have you seen any wedding halls refuse to host second marriage weddings. Na, as I said most you conservative evangelicals ignore 90% of what Christ said.

Tell it to Lilly white Baptist churches all over the south. Of course churches discriminate on the basis of race. Jimmy Carter resigned from Plains Baptist Church because the refused to admit blacks..

Dan Ruck June 28, 2015 at 8:19 pm

Why is it only the right-wing loonies who threaten to set themselves on fire, threaten that God is going to destroy America, etc., when they don’t get their way? And how can normal people abide that sort of nonsense?
