FLAG SUPPORTERS ALSO MORE LIKELY TO REFLECT OPINION AT THE BALLOT BOX

|| By FITSNEWS || A new poll shows a “sharp racial divide” in South Carolina over the issue of the Confederate flag – which has become the focus of a national firestorm in the wake of last week’s horrific, racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C.

According to the poll (.pdf HERE) – conducted by the Missouri-based Remington Research Group – 55 percent of South Carolinians supported removing the flag from the grounds of the S.C. State House in the aftermath of the tragedy.  Thirty-seven percent oppose taking the flag down – while eight percent are unsure.

Only 47 percent of whites support removing the flag, though, while 72 percent of blacks support removing it.  Meanwhile 80 percent of blacks believe the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism – compared to only 27 percent of whites.

Beyond the racial divide, there are degrees of intensity to consider …

For example, a whopping 80 percent of flag supporters said they would “hold their state legislator accountable by voting against them if they took a position against their view.”  By comparison, 61 percent of flag opponents felt the same way.

More info …

The survey also asked South Carolinians what they believed the Confederate flag symbolizes. A total of 43 percent believe the flag is a symbol of racism compared to 51 percent who believe the flag is a symbol of history; 6 percent were unsure.

South Carolinians believe the Confederate flag reflects poorly upon the state, but not overwhelmingly. Almost a majority, 49 percent, believe the flag reflects poorly upon residents while 40 percent do not believe it reflects poorly; 11 percent were unsure.

“The data shows that supporters of the Confederate flag are much more passionate than opponents, but a majority of South Carolina believes the flag should be removed. A sharp racial divide also exists on this issue, especially on what they believe the flag symbolizes,” said pollster Titus Bond.

Remington Research Group surveyed 975 South Carolinians (a sample weighted to reflect projected 2016 voter turnout) via telephone from June 23-24, 2015.  The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percent.

RELATED: “HATE, NOT HERITAGE”

This website long maintained an irreverant indifference toward the flag prior to the “Holy City Massacre,” in which 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Storm Roof murdered nine South Carolinians at the historic Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C.

“State leaders can leave it, move it, burn it or use it as a bath towel for all we care,” we wrote back in 2011.

But in the aftermath of the shooting we’ve embraced the need to take it downnow.  Which it appears members of the S.C. General Assembly are inclined to do.

This is nice and all, but American society, at large, has decided the flag has to go. Like everything else, SC will lag behind, but will eventually take it down. Just accept it.

I didn’t dig into the poll, was it really only land line? If so, then the numbers for “take it down” are very low and misleading.

Here is the respondents by age group. This screams landline poll.

18-29 9%
30-39 13%
40-49 16%
50-69 41%
70+ 21%

Reply
Stephan June 25, 2015 at 3:19 pm

No, it screams those in favor of the flag are between the ages of 50 and dead.

Reply
Quietus June 25, 2015 at 3:27 pm

Very few in the top three age groups have land line phones and hell even if they do they don’t answer them. Thus why it’s weighted 62% to 50+ ranges. This obviously skews the poll to older voter which I believe was the points above.

Obviously everyone over 50 doesn’t support it and every one under 30 doesn’t want it down, but it we can conclude that the poll is skewed pro-flag.

Stephan June 25, 2015 at 3:31 pm

I’m in the mid range – I have a land line. But I understand your point. Still, it plays to Col. Sander’s narrative. Speaking as he was in front of a huge crowd of 8 guys.

Look guys, we get it. The confederate flag is offensive. Imo, the American flag is probably more offensive and should also be changed/banned. Think about it. Founded on slavery. Enshrined in our constitution was the idea that a black guy was worth 3/5 of a white guy while women weren’t able to vote. The US army basically killed like a billion indians all under the American flag. Then, the American flag was on the Enola Gay when it blew up hundreds of thousands of japanese. Then, The American flag was flying over the troops that invaded Iraq for no reason.

In short, the American flag needs to come down and be relegated to the history books. Really, America itself does. After all, it’s only named America because some Spanish Conquistador helping Amerigo Vespucci named it so. So even the name of America is racist.

So here’s the plan- start from scratch. New name. North and South America need to be renamed to NorthWest continent and SouthWest Continent. The US will become Northwest United States. No racist name.

Next, we create a new constitution. This one will include women and minoirities. No more racist constitution with 3/5 or having to deal with the sexism of having “Founding Fathers.” What, no founding mothers? Sexist.

The new constitution can fix the problems we have with freedom of speech. Offensive signs like the Swastika, confederate flag can be outlawed. We can also make this a shifting target so if something like, say, the Cross becomes offensive to future generations, no need for a constitutional amendment to change. Just whatever is offensive that day to a lot of people can be outlawed.

The new constitution can also force everyone to love gay marriage and transgendered people. Any hate speech will not be tolerated. This is a New day in the NUS.

Next, we create an entirely new flag. One that’s inclusive of all Northwestians and wasn’t created to fly over a country of half slave-owners that gave black people no rights and women no right to vote.

Behold the new flag of the Northwest United States- a land of inclusiveness, freedom, and toleration.

Those numbers have changed significantly in 15 years… just like gay marriage polls. The baby boomers are being replaced by millennials. Being from the generation between them, I’m interested in whether public opinion controlled by millennials will create better outcomes than public opinion controlled by baby boomers. Personally, I think it will. The baby boomers turned out to be greedy self-centered coke heads… generally speaking, of course.

Voters still overwhelmingly reject redefining marriage. But you just dictate with your corrupt judges and a propagandist media. It’s why you riot when honest people in grand juries, operating within the law, disregard hype, and do the right thing. You are the worst of what our enemies are. And I doubt you’ll ride for free, forever. The bill will come due. And you are very ill-equipped to deal with it, when you’re told “no.”

You’ve peddled race-hate as your primary issue for decades. Most general assemblies, governors, the US House and the US Senate have rejected your politics based on the exploitation and manipulation of the ignorant. The courts are pretty all you have to wage your war of hate. What you’re doing now will change nothing, except maybe make you even more repulsive to voters. And hopefully it will motivate the non-participating to wake up, and deal with you.

Let’s just cut to the chase here. This flag was not even at the statehouse until 1961. It was raised then by act of the legislature. Not a single minority member of the legislature voted in favor of raising it. Do you know why? BECAUSE THERE WERE NONE! They couldn’t hold office because they couldnt vote! This was a bad idea and it is time to move on.

The Confederate Flag wasn’t about slavery, it was about the independence of states.

That was what this country was founded on, until Stinkin Lincoln decided it was the
Mafia and once you were in there was no way out. That MF was responcible for the death of over 1,000,000 Americans and caused 10s of millions of Americans to suffer for generations to come.

But the people that suffered the most were the slaves that he freed. They lived in horrible conditions for decades after because stupid Lincoln thought the Congress would vote him the funds to send them back to Africa and set up settlements there for them.”
