|| By FITSNEWS || Remember the “other” Confederate flag controversy to crop up in the aftermath of last week’s horrific, racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C.?
If not, here’s a refresher on the drama going down at South Carolina’s government-run military college, The Citadel – where one alumni leader’s effort to move the controversial banner from the college’s chapel nearly cost him his job.
Anyway, we’ve just been handed a press release quoting the school’s president, lieutenant general John W. Rosa.
From the release …
This has been a difficult week for our community and state. The Citadel has directly felt the impact of the tragedy at Emanuel AME Church as one of the victims was a Citadel Graduate College alumnus and six of our employees lost family members. The Emanuel AME Church is our neighbor and we consider it a part of our extended Citadel family. We will continue to support the church and its members in their time of need.
Today, The Citadel Board of Visitors voted 9-3 in favor of moving the Confederate Naval Jack from Summerall Chapel to an appropriate location on campus. The move will require an amendment to the Heritage Act by the South Carolina legislature. The board’s motion authorizes the Chair of the Board of Visitors and the administration of the college to work with the legislature on the amendment. The Board of Visitors and I believe now is the right time to move the flag from a place of worship to an appropriate location. We pride ourselves on our core values of honor, duty and respect. Moving the Naval Jack to another location is consistent with these values and is a model to all of the principled leadership we seek to instill in our cadets and students. It also promotes unity on our campus, in our community and across our state during this time of healing.
Good for The Citadel.

Rosa and the 9 board members just need to move the flag today and see if the legislature has them arrested for violating the heritage act.

The Citadel attempted to remove the flag as recently as last year (and maybe before that years ago). The Heritage Act prevents them from physically doing so. This was the right decision. And that one alumnus, doesn’t have a job at the school, he’s VP of The Citadel Alumni Association (unpaid). He could have shown leadership by bringing alumni together on this issue, and instead, decided to use the tragedy, mere minutes into it, to attack his own CAA, the president of the college, the board of visitors, etc. Serious lack of judgment.

Uh, wasn’t the Citadel started in the first place in reaction to the Denmark Vessy plot? Didn’t the Citadel fire some of the first shots at Fort Sumter? Seems like it should be closed altogether.

I don’t think we should stop at some stupid flag. I was looking at photos of the funeral procession for Sen. Pinckney and noticed the highway patrol honor guard. With the exception of the campaign hats it looked like a confederate honor guard for the late senator in their gray uniforms. And what about The Citadel and West Point uniforms, those are just dressy condederate uniforms . The SC state flag should be done away with also, it was adopted in 1861 and flown by troops in battle (in various forms) during that war. I think if we did away with all such things that the black community could move on.
McConnell has nothing to say because there is nothing to say. If anyone of you readers has a black friend and the flag comes up, you would know what to do. The question is where do you hand Dixie in your home? If you do hang it in your home, I guarantee you that your black friend will only come by once. If you have any.. Take it down July 1 just to do the right thing. Like Helter Skelter, its got too much blood on it and it not the rue sign of the original. Man Up!!
