|| By FITSNEWS || Four former governors of South Carolina – including one whose previous efforts to bring down the Confederate flag cost him his job – have echoed current S.C. governor Nikki Haley‘s call for the controversial banner to be removed from the grounds of the S.C. State House.

Democrats Jim Hodges (1999-2003), Fritz Hollings (1959-1963) and Dick Riley (1979-87) joined “Republican” David Beasley (1995-1999) in calling for the flag to come down in the aftermath of last week’s horrific, racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C.

“As former governors of this great state, we support the call by Governor Haley and state and federal elected leaders to remove the Confederate Flag from the statehouse grounds,” the statement from the four governors read. “Last week’s tragic events at Mother Emanuel AME Church have reminded us of the important bond we share as South Carolina citizens. We should fly only the United States and South Carolina Flags on our Statehouse grounds – flags that represent us all.”

Beasley – a former Democrat – lost his reelection bid in 1998 in no small part to his push to remove the flag from the State House dome.

I’m hoping for at least an hourly update on the removal of the flag. Thanks for not disappointing.

It’s like monster trucks:

“MONSTER! MONSTER! MONSTER!”

“BRING YOUR KIDS! FIRST 100 ENTRIES GET CONFEDERATE FLAG FOAM FINGERS!”

“SEE THE GENERAL LEE! SEE BIG FOOT RUN OVER GENERAL LEE! MONSTER! MONSTER! MONSTER TRUCKS!”

Effective advertising for the masses….money in Will’s click bait pocket. He wins, some of us lose our sanity…but he keeps the kiddies fed so there’s that I suppose.

This is the only news coming out of SC. You should see the coverage here in Colorado.

Lindsey Graham is coming out?

Oh, ever mind I read the headline wrong. I thought it said: Four Former SC Governors Call For Confederate Fag To Come Out.

This is just another Flag story.

Have you ever changed your mind about a subject over the course of 50 years?

Wonder why he hasn’t mentioned it in 50 years? Where was he on this 15 years ago?

I noticed that as well. I guess the guy who put it there has as much right as anyone else to ask it come down. But the point is well taken.

It wasn’t just Hollings…it was also the Democrat controlled Legislature that put it up with him.

William June 24, 2015 at 3:35 pm

And the Republican controlled legislature has kept it up there for the past two decades. It doesn’t make a bit of difference who put it up. Most of them are dead. The question is why is it still up? And that is all on Republicans. Why, because racial division has until now benefited Republicans. All part of the Southern Strategy.

Marie Barf June 24, 2015 at 3:47 pm

Of course to you it doesn’t matter who put it there, because the Conferderate Flag is a wholly-owned entity of the Democrat party. The racists that they are. Had they never put it up to begin with, to combat racial equality, we wouldn’t be having this debate once again, now would we?

William June 24, 2015 at 4:04 pm

Of course your argument is stupid. The flag was put up to celebrate the centennial of the Battle of Fort Sumter. Any legislature could have taken it down at anytime since it was put up. All of the Democrats in the state legislature have been willing to vote to take it down for the past 15 years, but every attempt has been blocked by the Republicans. Again part of the Southern Strategy. .

There are racists in all parties, but today there are far more Republican racists in SC than Democratic racists. You can lie about that all you want, but no one is stupid enough to still be listening to you. Anyone who grew up in this state knows Republicans have been using animosity toward black people to get votes since Nixon.

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger. Lee Atwater on the Republican Southern strategy.

The Colonel June 24, 2015 at 7:32 pm

Yep, it was put up for one year to celebrate the centennial of the Civil War and then left up by Democrats to say FU to Washington over the civil rights legislation.

The General June 24, 2015 at 7:36 pm

Who are today’s republicans. Remember? They all switched when the democrats supported civil rights. Because they are total bigots. Remember?

William June 25, 2015 at 10:24 am

You must have forgotten to finish the sentence. I will fix it for you.

Yep, it was put up for one year to celebrate the centennial of the Civil War and then left up by Democrats to say FU to Washington over the civil rights legislation, and later left up by Republicans as a FU to black people and to pit white people against black people as part of their southern strategy.

The racist in the Democratic Party largely abandoned the party in the 60s and 70s and early 80s and became Republicans. So the same people have been keeping that flag up their for 50 years.

nitrat June 24, 2015 at 4:51 pm

Go somewhere where people don’t know US and SC history and don’t know the evolution of the Democratic and Republican Parties since the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

The Colonel June 24, 2015 at 7:37 pm

Name the Democrats who supposedly changed sides, except, Strom. Byrd died a Dem, Hollings, still a Dem,

The General June 24, 2015 at 7:39 pm

Wow. You really are getting desperate. It’s fun watching you ‘conservatives’ shuck and jive.

Up Chuck June 24, 2015 at 7:37 pm

1960 Democrats are 2015’s Republicans. Nice try.

The Colonel June 24, 2015 at 7:30 pm

Yep, the Democrats kept it up till David Beasley (R, SC) took it off the roof after 30 years of Democrat refusals to act on the issue.

getting desperate? June 24, 2015 at 7:34 pm

You guys are really grasping at straws with that one. lol
Any new riders in that clown car?

The Colonel June 24, 2015 at 7:39 pm

Desperate hell, the facts are, Dem put it up, kept it up and Republicans will be the ones who took it off the roof and finally put it away.

The General June 24, 2015 at 7:43 pm

And good for them. Only after being shamed by the entire world. It’s coming down and now consigned to a symbol of hate. Only the most backwoods assholes will be stupid enough to fly it publicly (just like neo-nazis). Mission accomplished.

The Colonel June 24, 2015 at 7:46 pm

Still more than the Dems accomplished in the 100+ years they terrorized the state.

The General June 24, 2015 at 7:54 pm

lol. Let me guess….Benghazi? Emails?

The General June 24, 2015 at 11:56 pm

So predictable…

Let no crisis go to waste June 24, 2015 at 11:51 pm

Let’s remove Hollings name from every government building, road, and statute.

Jim Hodges and Dick Riley wouldn’t suck a dick but would likely be willing to hold it in their mouth until the swelling went down. It’s no surprise they’d vote for it to come down. Beasley tried to do his bad-ass biker imitation and got shown the door when he mentioned it. Fritz is just too fucking senile to make any rational decisions.

So Nikki comes out looking like the hero. Who cares? The flag has joined the nazi flag in the trash heap of history…just 150 years late.

Did I notice that the Queen overlooked Beasley, or thought him too inconsequential to invite to her giant ass covering news conference about changing her mind on the flag? I noticed that it wasn’t long before the David Muldro Beasley personal roadshow appeared in the State House to suck up credit. You know he gets lonely in Society Hill. People give him too much credit on the flag deal. He was an arrogant asshole who managed to offend his base over and over again on a variety of subjects, right into One Term.
