POTENTIAL FILIBUSTER STILL LOOMING …
|| By FITSNEWS || The South Carolina Senate has the two-thirds majority it needs to amend its recent adjournment resolution and take up the Confederate flag controversy, sources tell FITS.
The news comes on the heels of our earlier reporting that the S.C. House of Representatives also had the two-thirds majority it needed to amend the “sine die” resolution – which governs what issues can be discussed in an extended session of the legislature.
In other words, lawmakers are doing exactly what we urged them to do three days ago by way of responding to the horrific, racially motivated “Holy City Massacre,” the mass murder of nine black churchgoers at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C. There, nine black parishioners – including S.C. Senator Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor – were gunned down by Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist.
“Sine die will be amended and we will take up debate (on the flag) shortly after Clem is buried,” one S.C. Senator told FITS. “Not all will vote for taking it down, but almost all will vote to amend sine die so (the issue) can be taken up.”
And what of S.C. Senator Lee Bright – a Confederate flag supporter who has reportedly been mulling a possible filibuster of the flag debate?
“He may rail – though he’s being strongly urged not to since that will prompt Democrats to respond,” the Senator told us.
UPDATE: Confirmed. A press release from the S.C. Senate “Republican” Caucus states that GOP lawmakers “voted overwhelmingly today to take up the issue of moving the Confederate Battle Flag from the (State House) grounds. In the very near future bills will be offered and the full Senate will debate and vote on this important matter.”

If the flag comes down, others called for it to come down first, including Will, but any honest appraisal by both her supporters and opponents leads to the conclusion that it never would’ve happened if not for Haley’s leadership. This is disgusting. There is only one reason that flag is coming down, and that is because there are 9 dead black people in Charleston. If they had not been murdered by a racist there isn’t a Republican in this state who would have lifted a finger to to take that flag down, including Nikki Haley. Their lives were obviously the price that had to be paid to get Republicans, to even listen to or care, what black people thought about that flag.
Their hand was called, that all. Hailey gets exactly zero credit for doing what’s best for her. I think it should be acknowledged that the events that have transpired were deeply personal for the members of the Senate. Nearly all members of that body arrived to work last Thursday to find Sen. Pinkney’s place covered with black cloth, a small vase of flowers. We have heard from many on both sides of the aisle that even if they didn’t agree with him, they had deep respect for him. They considered him a friend; a good friend. (Well, except for Bright who based on his comments wasn’t terribly close to him to say the least). Anyway, it was personal. The fact they couldn’t lower that rag to half mast, I think to Davis and some others, was particularly hurtful and galling. Nikki ran to make her voice heard to push it along, and get ahead of the Legislature – but make no mistake, there’s no real power on Nikki’s part to do anything. And yes there was concern at the national party level over the optics, and the fact that Tim Scott would have to come out and make a statement sooner rather than later, and it would be to take it down. But, it was, and is now, the Legislature that is driving this. They are hearing from the constituents, and responding. This would not have happened if it had not personally affected them. They have never been willing to spend political capital on this before. It wasn’t until one of their own, a respected one of their own, had been killed at the hands of hate-filled kid flying that rag. And it is the right thing to do.

However, local reps (esp. senators) couldn’t give a flying fuck what Haley and the national GOP wants. Their voters back in the districts (angry, old racist white folks) would be on the phone telling them not to take the flag down at all costs.
If they could get away with a voice vote or secret ballot or some other mechanism that doesn’t say they voted to take it down, then they it might work as they wouldn’t want the folks back in the district to know they voted to take it down. Flip side is that would also provide the chance for them to vote to keep it up.

No doubt there are some changed hearts and changed votes, but check out Lee Bright’s facebook page. There is a simmering movement of backlash among the racists to somehow conflate the taking down of the rebel rag with Federal overreach and liberal pc correctness. This is despite the fact many of S.C.’s own elected officials and a growing number of residents in state want it down. That sort of argument will ignite the racists in S.C. to push back and try and stop it.
