SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR’S EVOLVING VIEWS ON CONTROVERSIAL BANNER …

|| By FITSNEWS || We all know S.C. governor Nikki Haley rebuffed efforts to remove the Confederate flag from the S.C. State House grounds during her 2014 reelection campaign.  And that prior to that, she went on record supporting the flag’s presence on the north lawn of the building.

Haley is now calling for the flag to come down in the aftermath of last week’s “Holy City Massacre” – the murder of nine black churchgoers by a racist white gunman.

Some believe her conversion is self-serving.  In fact in outlining their own plan for removing the controversial banner, several members of the S.C. House of Representatives had some choice words for the governor.

“Governor Haley could have done this at any time during the past six years, but no she waited to jump on the media bandwagon after a tragedy – and just as the presidential campaigns come into focus,” one lawmaker told us.

Another lawmaker was even more scathing in rebuking the governor …

“Name something Nikki Haley has tried to lead on other than the evening news,” the lawmaker told us.

Unlike these lawmakers, we don’t begrudge Haley for changing her mind on the flag.  While we never supported it like she did – we didn’t come out and call for its removal, either.  At least not until after the bloodbath in Charleston.

But while we were calling for the flag to come down last week, Haley was still dodging the question …

“At a time like this, you have to look back at what we’ve done,” Haley told CBS last Friday.  “Fifteen years ago the General Assembly at the time they had a conversation.  The Republicans and Democrats and everybody came together on a consensus to bring the Confederate flag down off of the dome.  And they put it on a monument out in front.  I think that conversation will probably come back up again.  And you what we hope that we do things the way South Carolinians do.  Which is have the conversation, allow some thoughtful words to be exchanged, be kind about it.  Come together on what we’re trying to achieve and how we’re trying to do it.  I think the state will start talking about that again.  We’ll see where it goes.  What I will tell you right now, is while a lot of issues will come up, my job as governor is to bring everybody back together again.”

Asked specifically about her view on the banner, Haley had this to say …

“I understand that’s what ya’ll want, (but) my job is to heal the people of this state,” she said.  “This is very real to us. There will be policy discussions and you will hear me come out and talk about it. But right now, I’m not doing that to the people of my state.”

Again … we’re not inside Haley’s heart.  We can’t tell whether she was legitimately waiting for the appropriate time to address the issue … or whether she was waiting to see how the issue was going to unfold.

Bottom line: The banner needs to be removed.  And whoever is on board with getting that done as quickly as possible, well, we’re not going to quibble over their motivations.  Honestly, we think Haley has – on the whole – done a pretty good job representing South Carolina in the aftermath of this tragedy.

From my view, I think FITS has lead the bandwagon on this. I think in part he helped get the national media attention to it. He raised the debate, and the people reacted to it. The politicians were the ones slow to react.

When I campaigned for her and worked for her, I caught her in lie, after lie and saw her use people, then stab them in the back.

I will seriously LMAO if Haley and most everyone involved in this wind up losing their political careers over it.

Normally, it wouldn’t be a big deal for me, but NAACP (National Association of ALWAYS Complaining People) agreed to the current arrangement on State House grounds, then quickly backed out and instituted a laughable boycott against SC for adhering to the agreement. Piss on them!

What changed? A worthless POS murdered several good people. Iy happens all the time around the world. He happened to subscribe to a certain belief sytem and used or possessed certain products, to include a Confederate flag. Do we ban Hyundai Elantra’s because he drove one to and from the crime? Was there a roll of toilet paper or a soft drink in his car, the brand of which needs to banned because he made use of them before or after the crime?
What kind of shoes did he wear?
What kind of shirt, pants, and underwear? I must know to be sure I have none of them.

Nikki’s career goes through DC, not Pickens. She’ll get a huge win from this. A female, minority, southern, republican Governor who made a historic decision in favor of civil rights. She can write her own ticket. Now… that doesn’t change the fact that those of us that know her, know she’s a two faced lying opportunist, but the fact remains taking the flag down is a political home run for her. She would be stupid not to.

Reply
vicupstate June 22, 2015 at 4:48 pm

She gets a temporary win but to get real mileage out of this, she would have had to been against the flag before today. Besides, she has too many skeletons in her closet to be a VP. Cabinet post is the best option left for her, and that is only if a Republican is elected POTUS.

We have robbed him of his devious goals and put out the fire of his hate.

It wouldn’t surprise me that some final decision (at least for this year) will be announced no later than July 3 in time for Independence Day. Whatever is done they will be telling the citizens either “like it – or lump it”. Then they will be slapping each other on the back (or ass, for some) and then heading out for beer and bbq.

Salon.com said white America must “answer” for the tragedy, a somewhat different tone to how they responded the Boston bombing, for which Muslims ‘didn’t need to apologize’.

Reply
CharlieChan June 22, 2015 at 3:00 pm

I think Muslims have spent almost all of their time answering for their beliefs since 2001. If anything, your argument is saying that we shouldn’t judge all Muslims for what a few radicalized ones do. That’s a good argument, and Salon is wrong about “white America” needing to answer for it… Really, it’s more like “White Lexington” or whatever social groups this kid was a part of that fed these ideas.

I think Muslims have spent much of their time answering for their beliefs since the 8th century when they split into multiple factions and started warring amongst themselves.

IMOP a governor is Suppose to respond to the will of The People of her/his state regarding supposed offensive symbols. No matter, who is complaining.

Likewise a governor and legislature is supposed to respond to the will of The People in his/her state regarding supposed offensive taxes on fuel (and food and anything else). No matter who is complaining.

Likewise a president and congress is supposed to respond to the will of The People in his/her country regarding excessive government involvement in things medical (and housing and education and anything else). No matter who is complaining. … Oh wait.
