It seems to me that all of these politicians, groups, news outlets are running around in circles, looking for something else to drum up, to incite and bring attention to other things they feel are connected to the terrorism in Charleston. But that’s just my observation based on past experiences and what I am seeing in this matter.

Just like it was politically expedient for the politicians to put it up in 1962. Period. The flag on the state house has always been political, not historical. The only difference is, the public Haley is appeasing is demanding unity and the public the legislators in 1962 were appeasing were demanding the opposite.
They polled this issue. Then all the pols did the calculations about who will get the power, money and status, and hence, the flag comes down. (I think the flag should have come down years ago) The process is one of calculation and self interest.

I’m not put off by death. When I was a small boy, my puppy was run over by an 18 wheeler. My dad went out in the street to get it and laid it on an egg crate. I stood there and watched him die. I was moved by the look in his eye, as though he couldn’t understand what he might have done wrong, but he was sincerely sorry.
I felt the deepest sorrow – not for the loss of my puppy, but for that look in his eye. I remember his last breath to this day.
I learned an important lesson that day.
When my father died, I didn’t cry. I understood. The same when my oldest brother died of cancer, and my mother died of old age after a year of Alzheimer’s. I understand.
I have an idea of what I will feel if I know death is within days or hours, or seconds. It will be a sadness that I will no longer be able to rub Republican’s ignorance in their faces… but at least I will know that I’m not being punished for something – that’s more than my puppy got.
The fight is here – for the quality of life for all of us.

Aside from the flag, which I do not even give a hoot about, the more I follow what Haley says and does – the more I see how wishy washy and unstable she appears to be. In my opinion, she is a nice attractive and outgoing woman, but needs to focus more on how to rationalize and prioritize things that are much more important than some 150 year old flag.

Actually, the crime rate in the US is the lowest it’s been since the 1950s. Our world is demonstrably safer than it has ever been. Technology has done a lot to make crimes of the past almost impossible nowadays and it’s also made it nearly impossible for a criminal to “get away and start over” somewhere else. We’re all connected and monitored. We always hear about the evil side of that, but there is a good side, too. We are a lot safer than we were in the 70s or 80s. Personally, I think “getting back” to any time where there was more crime and violence would be stupid.

Actually, almost no slaves were brought to America under a US flag. Remember, slaves were not brought into the US by law after 1808 and we weren’t America until 1783. Most slaves were imported under British, French or Dutch flags.

In fact the vast majority of slaves imported into the new world went to Brazil (40%). The us only got about 7% of the slaves imported into the new world. Lee said he was fighting to defend his native Virginia and don’t forget he was offered command of the Union Army prior to the war.

His home was seized and turned into a cemetery out of spite – he never sought any recompense. When offered the command of the Uion Army, he demurred saying he would not raise his hand against his native state – at that time most “Americans” thought of themselves as Virginians or South Carolinians first instead of “Americans”. Lee prohibited the excessive barbarity of most other commanders on both sides of the equations.
As the president of Washington College (later Washington and Lee) he repeatedly expelled white students for violent attacks on local black men. He publicly and privately urged obedience to the authorities and respect for law and order.
He privately chastised his former peers for their actions and words during Reconstruction. In a letter to Jubal Early and Jefferson Davis he wrote: “It should be the object of all to avoid controversy, to allay passion, give full scope to reason and to every kindly feeling. By doing this and encouraging our citizens to engage in the duties of life with all their heart and mind, with a determination not to be turned aside by thoughts of the past and fears of the future, our country will not only be restored in material prosperity, but will be advanced in science, in virtue and in religion.

I am not sure why anyone considered it a good idea, to ask black people to fight for the continued enslavement of black people. Had the Confederacy done that, I assume many white slave owners would have ordered their slaves to fight in their place or at least continue to serve them as a servant while they fought.

In all fairness he was at least partially responsible for the death of a lot of the people buried there. No doubt many on the Union side considered it justice that the military leader of the rebellion be forced to live in the shadow of the graves of those he fought so valiantly to kill.
Also, I just attended a funeral at Arlington two weeks ago. It was inspiring. Many families would consider it an honor to house the bodies of so many fallen heros and honored dead.
