WHAT WENT DOWN …

|| By FITSNEWS || The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline in South Carolina currently stands at $2.46 – eight cents higher than when we checked it a few weeks ago (and forty-eight cents higher than it was when governor Nikki Haley offered up the first of several proposed gas tax hikes in the Palmetto State).

South Carolina’s fuel costs remain the cheapest in the country, according to AAA’s daily fuel gauge – well behind the national average of $2.75 per gallon of regular unleaded.

Good news, right?  Sure … but as we’ve repeatedly mentioned, South Carolinians are also dirt poor, meaning they pay a much higher percentage of their income on fuel costs (second only to Mississippi and West Virginia, actually).

Anyway … it’s worth mentioning because the steady price increases come amidst an avalanche of legislative, media and special interest support for gas tax hikes (even as state lawmakers received $400 million in new funding for their $26 billion budget).  Fortunately, S.C. Senator Tom Davis spent the last two weeks of the 2015 legislative session courageously filibustering any gas tax increase.

Good for him …

Because what went down is clearly going back up …

I’m just glad the Legislature got around Davis’ filibuster and actually did something to finally fix the roads. Oh, wait ……………..

He’s running the state like a business, a really shoddy business that puts off work until it ends up being an expensive fix, and then stiffs the guy he hires to fix it.

Where your “Rainbows and Unicorns?” We had a good jobs report today. Gas prices isn’t big news. I’m looking forward to your reasons why we should ignore it.

Good news? Allegedly 281,000 new jobs were created last month. First time unemployment claims last WEEK were 275,000.

My guess is Myrtle Beach hired 100,000 of these people for the summer at minimum wage. :)

Bible Thumper June 5, 2015 at 11:05 am

Get your numbers straight. 281,000 is net job gains. There were 281,000 more jobs created than lost. As for first time unemployment claims, 275,000 is a low number that is consistent with job growth. Even in the best economy some companies beat others. There are 149 million jobs in the US. 275,000 represents only 1 in 540 workers.

Simple math BT…
1.281,000 people took NEW jobs
2.275,000 LOST jobs and applied for FIRST time unemployment.

Wrong! See last two numbers in table. 141,679,000 jobs in May minus 141,399,000 jobs in April = 280,000 “more jobs.”

Bible Thumper June 5, 2015 at 11:48 am

You reply doesn’t contain any math, just two unrelated numbers.

flip June 5, 2015 at 11:54 am

How are they unrelated?
Over a MILLION people filed for FIRST time unemployment benefits in May-they are NO longer working.

281,000 NEW jobs were created.

NET loss of over 750,000 in workforce.

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 11:57 am

It’s net job gains. So you take the total number lost, versus the total people received, and you have a surplus in jobs created. If I took $100 from you, and gave you back $125, how much money did you lose. How much did you gain. $25.

Bible Thumper June 5, 2015 at 12:00 pm

First line of the jobs report.
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 280,000 in May

Forget it – he’s lost the agrument and run away again. It’s like huntin’ wood chucks with him. Lots of noise, stays next to the hole.

Bible Thumper June 5, 2015 at 12:23 pm

More interesting for me is, where’s Fits?

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 12:02 pm

Let’s try this one. In early June 2008 I applied for first time unemployment. I received it for one week. On June 29 I started a new job. So was I unemployed in June, or did I count as employed?

flip June 5, 2015 at 12:04 pm

You and BT need a math class.Herman Cain even gets this.

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 12:05 pm

The pizza guy? Well there’s your math problem.

flip June 5, 2015 at 12:09 pm

Or how about the labor participation rate is around 63% (37% aren’t working) and the unemployment rate is 5.5%?

Ha Ha

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 12:13 pm

Again Senor Semi Retired, you have people who’ve retired early, Mom’s who no longer need to work, kids aged 16-18, college students, maimed Vets. You have to let go of that 92 million number, it’s mainly people who don’t need to, or cannot, or are engaged in something other than punching a clock. Go back to your supporting document the other day from FactCheck – the one on participation rate. Actually read it, you might find it enlightening. Here’s a clue, Labor Participation was even lower during Ike’s tenure.

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 11:56 am

How do you get that number Flip? Even if it was 275,000 one week, and say 250,000 three other weeks, that would be 1.25 million filing first time claims. The numbers reported then are saying we added 1.25 million jobs, plus, 281,000. Net gain.

flip June 5, 2015 at 12:00 pm

LMAO!!! How do you have 1.25 million jobs eliminated last month(number of FIRST time unemployment claims)-then say you created 281,000 AND have a net gain in NEW jobs?

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 12:00 pm

I give up. It means that there we enough jobs created to replace the 1.25 million, and have 281,000 extra. You refuse to see the truth, I can’t help you.

flip June 5, 2015 at 12:06 pm

Oh.THe same TRUTH that 92 MILLION adults are unemployed and yet unemployment is only 5.5%.

Ha Ha.

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 12:09 pm

92 million are not working. Why do you want the elderly to have to work, and despise college students, stay at home Moms and the maimed and disabled veterans. Seriously – you have to start getting your news from better news sources. If you’re gloom and doom was correct, the DOW would be back down to 12,000. Now I need to get back to work.

Bible Thumper June 5, 2015 at 11:25 am

With a declining 2,196,000 continuing claims and only 275,000 new claims, that averages out to 9 weeks before they find a new job.

flip June 5, 2015 at 11:33 am

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) held at 2.5 million in May and accounted for 28.6 percent of the unemployed.

Somebody needs to get their numbers right! lol

Reply
Rocky June 5, 2015 at 11:53 am

Well just think, if the long term want to go back to work, there’s 300,000 new jobs a month they can pick from.

flip June 5, 2015 at 11:57 am

Two problems.Democrats don’t want to work and these are seasonal jobs (service industry etc…with summer approaching).

Rocky June 5, 2015 at 11:52 am

Ah yes, the numbers are fake argument. The debate stance of the truly hopeless and out of touch.

Global oil markets are over supplied, so the gasoline price should drop. Google and read the “Global Oil Scam”. The US is a victim of this scam.

Reply
Blake June 6, 2015 at 10:34 am

they already did drop quite a bit. are you saying they should go to zero because they’re oversupplied?

Reply
earlrichards June 6, 2015 at 11:27 am

No. There is an over supply, so the price should drop more.
