When Law Enforcement is directed to not make arrests except for the most serious of crimes the stats don’t mean much.
I have heard that, too. The hooliganism didn’t drop. The politicians just tried to show fewer arrests by directing the cops not to make them and/or drop cases when they did. There was a story (I believe on WIS) where they interviewed a woman in Myrtle Beach or maybe NMB, and she said the politicians had promised the residents better enforcement and protection on streets just off the main drags. She said people were openly using the bathroom in yards and parking lots and of course, revving their motors at all times of the night and preventing sleep despite (more unfulfilled) promises from the politicians. The lady in that story indicated no enforcement for rampant littering and other uncivilized behaviors commonly witnessed at that event, each year.
I’m not opposed to biker weekend, but I don’t live there, so my opinions on the topic shouldn’t carry any significant weight. I think the people and businesses who are affected should be the ones to decide if they want to keep any bike week or not.

It defies imagination that that many people, mixed with alcohol, in a four by six block Town, wouldn’t have more violations
I’m sure some sort of stand down order played into this staggering statistic.
What a blessing it is to have a pro-active governor.Her early involvement in working with local officials and law enforcement apparently made the mayhem called Black Biker Week less violent and safer for residents and other tourists. Traffic appeared to be a problem however it always is.

I ride, I wear a helmet, eye pro, boots, long pants, gloves and generally a protective jacket. I’ve watched friends being “debrided” after relatively low speed spills on asphalt. They use a scrub brush and betadine to get all the little pieces of street out of the wound – it’s ugly.
Can you imagine how ugly it would be on that girl that’s facing the camera’s ass?
It only takes one such occurrence to realize the value of protective gear if the sufferer of the lack of such has an “episode”.
It doesn’t take much speed to do much damage either. When I was young and dumb(er) I took my dirtbike out for a little jaunt with a helmet but not my usual elbow pads…I went down at around 10mph in hardpack backing into a turn & trying to get a holeshot on my buddy out of it(goofing off)….bloody forearms later I never casually jumped on any bike without protective gear again.
Add Shifty to the “bruised cruisers” club – but mine ended with a broken collarbone caused by an unexplainable event that defied the laws of physics.
I’m really sorry to hear that.
When I look at any “incidences” I’ve had- if I’m honest with myself there’s always something I could have done personally to mitigate things.
That said, I’ve never had a crash on public roads thankfully. *raps on my wooden desk*
Mine was at the intersection of Broad River Road and I-26. My friend and biker guru was to ride with me to Newberry and gadabout while he critiqued me. This was to be my first ride out from the neighborhood.
It happened coming off BRR at the triangle where BRR and the off ramp from I-26 intersect. Hit hidden ditch — flew in the air — hit ground — was ready for ditch #2 and flew in the air again — layed it up against the berm — gasped for breath — waited for help.
He had already gotten on I-26 and didn’t see what happened. Had to wait for him to turn around and come back after he missed me.
Obviously I’m not a “government guy”- but the MSF courses at Midlands Tech are really very good if you ever decide to try again.
Statistically speaking, the first 6 months of riding is by far the most dangerous for a career motorcyclist.
The weekend courses there give you the proper beginning skills to reinforce as you practice and do so in a very safe manner(empty parking lot).
It’s a very good learning environment for those that have had bad experiences or are simply tentative.
Motorcycling isn’t for everyone, but it’s important to find out if it’s for you under the best/safest circumstances.(which usually isn’t your buddy telling you what to do in a parking lot and then slapping your shoulder and sending you out on the road)
No, it wasn’t like that. He and the other guys were very good teachers. This ride was to help me gain more confidence out on the open road. It was truly just a freak accident.
I guess this means I won’t be riding with you? Ha! Just messin’ with you!
Well, maybe you’ll learn something at an MSF course you didn’t know before if you decide to try it again.

There are only two types of motorcycle riders:

Late teens, early 20’s. BF and I were supposed to be “cruising” Virginia Beach. I had my helmet fastened, but not for racing. Someone pulled up at a red light and goosed it, so my BF who is driving a freaking Ninja, decides to call it a race, with ME on the back on the bike. After we topped 100 mph, the wind got under my helmet. I kid you not, had the race not have ended soon thereafter, I may not be here to tell the story. The force of the wind underneath my helmet, was pulling me off the bike, and I was a strong ass girl, but I couldn’t have held on much longer. Oooow was I pissed. LOL
Young motorcyclists have a hard time remembering that they are ambassadors of motorcycling when giving people rides. The one experience can turn someone off or on depending on how it goes.
Plus, the rider has handlebars to hold on to and knows exactly what he/she is doing and knows what to expect and can prepare for sudden changes in movement….all things the passenger doesn’t have the ability to do which is why it is much more terrifying to be a passenger on a motorcycle when an idiot is the rider.
Not only that, but rarely have I seen a rider properly instruct a passenger who has never ridden on a bike how to lean and what to expect.

It is true about teaching the rider. You lean, I lean, we lean.
I cut my teeth on riding motor cycles, we used sneak my friends mother’s 250 something, when we were kids. The bike was so big compared to our size, one would hold it up while the other made an effort to kick start it and then jump on. When the ride was over, our feet wouldn’t touch the ground, so we just sorta fell over, many scrapes and bruises but fond memories.
I haven’t been on a bike in many years, but at one time I loved to ride, both bikes and horses.
‘how to lean and what to expect.’

A biker was telling the story about riding in the Smokies when he came upon a guy who had car trouble. The guy agreed to be ridden down to an auto shop. The biker explained to him about leaning, which in his case was important because his bike had a tire that was losing air and he had to stop periodically to pump it. Well, at one point the biker was going around a curve and needed to pull over in the grass to pump his tire, but in the curve this other guy apparently panicked and jerked to the left which caused them both to crash down the embankment.
You ain’t a rider unless you’ve had at least one case of “road rash”
Was wearing all the stuff you are supposed to wear but physics has an ugly way of finding the path of less resistance.
No scars but every time I look at my right forearm there ain’t freckles where freckles used to be prior to one fateful day in February 1980……..
Technology has come a long way since i began riding back in 1973 and the new “protective” jackets are pretty slick (I have a 3-season one; “mil-spec of course, Air Force bases won’t let you in without it being “mil-spec” visability – I suppose all DOD sites are the same).
I like the jacket but admit I don’t wear it all the time. Helmet,gloves,pants and ‘half-way” suitable footwear mandatory. But this time of the year Carhart pocket “T’s” are the uniform of the day!!!!!!!
You can get a motorcycling specific textile jacket now for less than half what a decent, non-specific leather jacket would run back when I was a kid…and the textile will protect you better 90% of the time than the pre motorcycle specific leather. (racing leathers back in the day and now excepted of course)
The power of the market is still amazing to me sometimes.

I’ve got two leather jackets as well. A nice cold weather one I’ve had since 1974 the other one is my A-2 (sans patches but with the velcro still on it).
Wear those mostly when it gets chilly (A-2) or cold (circa 1974)
Plus, the old standby Levi jacket is hard to beat!!!!!

My forearms/elbows don’t match and I have a patch on my left hand that doesn’t match the rest. I’ve been down a time or two – that’s why I’m adamant about protective gear now. I’ve seen crotchrocket idiots in flip flops with no foot left after what should have been a walk away accident. I’ve seen Harley riders who thought their “colors vest” was all they needed with rash from shoulder to wrist. And my ER buddy always talks about the guys who come in with the bandanna on their head after making head to street contact – he thinks the bandanna is great, “…it mops up some of the mess and keeps all the goo together…”
Question: “You know what paramedics call riders who don’t wear helmets?”
Answer: “Organ donors”…………….
Back in the 80’s I found that those silky Members Only or baseball jackets slid amazingly well on pavement while not being nearly as hot in Florida. No road rash or blood ever but had dislocated shoulders, fractured collar bone, and fractured legs. I never went to the corner store without full gear. Only exception was the beach. The gear today is awesome.
Couldn’t maker her any uglier. If you’re dumb enough to wear that riding, well you’re dumb enough to endure the process.

I seem to remember reading someplace that the stratified culture in India is both based on skin color and socio-economic status…so I wouldn’t be surprised if she is.
Gotta love the FITS ‘Limited Gov’t’ mindset on this one. Let the event police itself and keep gov’t/police/MBACC out of it. That is great until all heck breaks out and people die, circa 2014, and businesses need assistance when Tourism suffers. Take tourism away from SC and tell me what you got then?

Don’t know where they’d go in North Carolina. Places i can think of don’t have much room to cruise and the ones that might are too small and the local law would put the kabosh on it in seconds flat.
Honky Bike Week and Nigger Bike Week need to go away. All either of them accomplish is clogging up the beach for actual tourists. Motorcycles are a scourge on society and so are their riders. Ban them or regulate them in to non-existence.
Da may be black, but da money is green. Nuff said.
They talk about all the money this event bring in. It would be interesting to have a way of compiling data on the losses generated by (reported AND unreported) shoplifting, vandalism, and other illegal or inconsiderste behaviors common to the event, such as families avoiding the area, its eateries, and other businesses for the duration. I bet those figues would knock quite a dent in the ones most quoted.
Working on the beach….you would be surprise that it’s less than what you think. …business’s profit and growth are high….hotel rate is more that weekend then any other holiday weekend.

Haley is nuts and obviously has something against black people. She is inviting a federal class action lawsuit against her and the state. SC residents will end up paying enormous legal fees and punitive awards.
Atlantic Beach is a dump, even for Myrtle Beach. The town should be annexed into North Myrtle Beach, burned to the ground and built up on.
For a couple of years in the late 90’s I drove gasoline tanker trucks for Hess out of the North Charleston terminal. Learned to hate the run during BBW. Wore out my left foot clutching and constantly shifting through low gears in heavy traffic. Maybe went two miles per hour.
Got to the station and the parking lot was jammed packed with drunken black bikers and girlfriends. Try to drop 9,000+ gallons into the ground while shooing away drunks sitting on blacktop leaning on tanker tires: “Hey! Not a good place to smoke!” I would holler and watch them get up and stumble across the lot.
Shittiest delivery ever. Got it two years in a row on multiple days. During this event It was not unusual for the Hess stations in MB to get 3 deliveries in a single day.
For or against the Rally all I can say is you should go spend the weekend down there and experience it. At the very least you will be able to tell why most eating establishments and the locals are against it. Been there done that.

I teach the MSF courses at Midlands and follow these stories. The wrong attitude while driving transfers directly to riding a motorcycle. We as riders, have no crumple zones or steel surrounding us unless you count the cars and such in the traffic pattern. Ask yourselves one question before leaving the driveway-“what’s the worst that could happen?” All of the protective gear does not make one invincible. The BRC is just the first step. Take a refresher course. Deviant behavior is not just for motorcyclists but we can make a difference within our ranks. Ride Safely, my friends.
