VIOLENCE DOWN ON GRAND STRAND …
|| By FITSNEWS || South Carolina has been spared direct landfalls from major hurricanes over the past quarter century … and on this Memorial Day weekend its Grand Strand dodged yet another bullet in the form of the annual Atlantic Beach Bikefest.
Controversial new regulations, a beefed-up police presence and a new “traffic loop” aimed at minimizing loitering appear to have succeeded in stemming much of the bloody violence which marred last year’s gathering.
Deadly shootings at last year’s “Black Bike Week” prompted S.C. governor Nikki Haley to call for an end to the event – but Atlantic Beach, S.C. hosted it anyway.
And apparently it was all good …
“We must have done something right, because last year I couldn’t get in here,” Horry County council chairman Mark Lazarus said in addressing a less-than-packed gathering of citizens held in the aftermath of the annual festival.
A year ago, citizens were calling for the heads of elected officials …
North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – which is located next to Atlantic Beach – saw forty-seven arrests over the Memorial Day weekend. A year ago the city reported 105 arrests. Tickets, wrecks and calls for assistance were also down.
County data – and data from the city of Myrtle Beach – should be released soon, but those numbers are expected to reinforce the downward trend.
Obviously we’re glad criminal activity declined at this year’s event … although as we stated previously some of the new regulations struck us as prima facie unconstitutional.

The fact is that the most controversial and problematic of the new regulations were tabled and never voted in by Myrtle Beach City Council.
There were rough spots, for sure, but in general it went remarkably well. That is not stopping some, with a clearly negative agenda, from making intense political hay out of one incident of gun violence and some exposed skin. And it is not stopping former Mayor Mark McBride — who reportedly is eyeing run for at least a seat on council in the next local election — from stating on Facebook that God should get all the credit for the event being so much less violent and chaotic.
Which is fine, in one sense. But he seems to imply that none of the human beings who worked so hard and so closely together across divides of race, class and politics did not really have a major hand in the “smooth sailing.”
McBride didn’t IMPLY that “none” of the people involved didn’t play an important hand in making the event LESS violent and tolerable for the residents.

The laws, as originally proposed, whether in violation of the US and state constitutions or not, we not all enacted. Some of the most questionable of them were tabled. Whatever the case, they were not Nikki Haley’s doing. It was a local matter. Haley has no authority or jurisdiction in such matters.

Some of the bikers understood irony when they took their pictures in front of the huge “Welcome to Myrtle Beach” sign at the northern US 17/Bus 17 split.
The $900,000 spent for barricades and who knows how much salary and overtime for the hundreds of MBPD, HCSD, SLED, SCHP and SCDNR officers, plus the 5-mile long traffic jam on Ocean Blvd was a bit overkill.
Apparently not to the citizens and VOTERS that asked their local politicians to clean this mess up.

That’s a bit of a logical leap. Social scientists & criminologists know that population doesn’t drive crime numbers; population density does. All that “overkill” (which we should have been using years ago) very likely (almost certainly) spread the crowds, ratcheted down the congregations along OB, and prevented numerous assaults. probably saved a life or three. The real irony is that no one in power seems to possess the political courage or integrity to talk about the real problems attendant to this rally. The arrest numbers are easily tweaked – simply order the officers to arrest fewer folks (translation, allow more disorder) and, voila! Lower crime during the rally!
Let’s not forget the SCSTP, the State Transport Police:

Also SC Dept. of Probation, Parole and Pardon were present.
Besides salary and overtime, there’s also the cost of fuel for their vehicles. I recall talking to one trooper who was from Pickens, and was driving his patrol car back after midnight on Monday.
There’s also lodging and meals, but some of that may be comped
