SPEAK UP … WHILE YOU CAN
|| By FITSNEWS || The S.C. Policy Council is hosting a public forum on censorship provisions included in a so-called “ethics” bill making its way through the S.C. General Assembly this year.
We’ve already weighed in on this legislation: Arguing it will do nothing to enhance “ethics” – while at the same time imposing unconstitutional limits on free speech.
“The legislation would stifle the ability of citizens to criticize their elected officials,” we wrote, referring to it as a “huge step in the wrong direction.”
The SCPC has weighed in, too.
“The South Carolina legislature is poised to pass new regulations of political speech,” the organization wrote recently. “While the proposed law is being spun as perfunctory regulation of election ads, it actually would go much farther than mere campaign ads to potentially cover virtually all communications critical of public officials during a broad window before an election.”
In fact the group’s president Ashley Landess – one of the participants in this week’s gathering – has been leading the fight against this bill.
Joining Landess at this week’s event? Brad Warthen (a former mainstream media editorial writer), Lynn Teague (of the S.C. League of Women Voters) and S.C. Rep. Rick Quinn. Meanwhile Bill Rogers – executive director of the S.C. Press Association (SCPA) – will moderate the event.
The debate will be held on Tuesday, May 19 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. EDT in the Campus Room of the Capstone Building (902 Barnwell Street) on the campus of the University of South Carolina in downtown Columbia, S.C.

Leatherman will do anything, including scheduling this debate, to take the public’s eyes off of the Budget Bill. The Senate Budget Bill is loaded with pork, has last minute and probably illegal changes/additions to it and is the only thing Leatherman Cares about.
He cares about money. He wants it in his pocket and the pocket of his friends.
Tell us more! And oh please, who is in on the skim?
Will Kenny Bingham be moderating the ethics debate by telling everyone to shut up or be sued?
Speaking about ethics. What about Don Wells and his $50,000 gift given to him by “jail bird” Brooks. Of course Wells stated in The Aiken Standard “that he was victim” like the other people who swindled by Brooks. Wells wasn’t swindled, this money apparetly was given to him by Brooks when Brooks was his campaign manager?????
A person voices their concern pertaining to change in established law then has semiautomatic gunfire outside my house at night. Yeh, that’s censorship or Chicago style politics (your choice).
South Carolina doesn’t have an ethics problem… shut up is why!
