“FRIENDLY FIRE” DOOMS SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE PRIORITY …

|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. senator Lee Bright killed a bill that would have banned abortions in South Carolina after twenty weeks.  The fire-breathing Upstate, S.C. social conservative – an ardent abortion foe – blocked the pro-life legislation because in his mind it did not go far enough.

Specifically, Bright filibustered the abortion bill because an amendment would have included exemptions for victims of rape and incest.

Several thousand babies are aborted in South Carolina each year – but only a few dozen are aborted after twenty weeks, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC).  In fact after twenty-four weeks, abortion is already illegal in South Carolina.

It’s not immediately clear how many babies aborted in the 20-24 week range would have been subject to the rape and incest exemptions – but let’s say for the sake of argument that the state’s initial estimate of thirty-six abortions performed after twenty weeks is accurate.  According to national data, one percent of women (i.e. one out of 100) who have an abortion became pregnant as a result of rape.  Meanwhile 0.5 percent (or one out of 200) become pregnant as a result of incest.

Applying those statistics to South Carolina (and extending them over a six-year period), we’re talking about a total of three babies.

Do their lives matter?  Absolutely …

But Bright could have saved 200 babies over that same time period … and chose not to.

That is inexcusable – and hypocritical.

And this guy calls himself pro-life?

This website does not wear social issues on our sleeve, but at the end of the day abortion is not a social issue – it is a liberty issue.  In fact it is the fundamental liberty from which all others flow.

Fortunately, abortion is on the decline in America.

We’ve consistently called for rape and incest exemptions, by the way – just as we’ve consistently supported the morning after pill (which prevents pregnancies from happening in the first place).  Those views enrage “100 percenters” like Bright – and to be fair, we respect Bright’s view.

But we never thought pro-life politicians would sacrifice hundreds of innocent babies just to make a political point.

Lee Bright – and any pro-life politicians in the S.C. General Assembly who support him on this issue – should be ashamed of themselves.  They had a chance to save life, and they chose not to.  Which means they are no longer “pro-life.”

There’s no other way to say it: They have blood on their hands …

Lee (not so) Bright is all about self promotion. This will put him in good with the upstate GCJ crowd who wear their social issues on their sleeves. Actually they only vote social issues and only two of those matter to them.

1. Ban All Abortions
2. Ban Gay Marriage / Gay Sex / Gay People.

Summed up in one succinctly “dem gays” and “abortion baaaaad”

Lee does this to stay tight with the base.
Leatherman lets him because it eats up the clock.
Then the right wing caves on this and other issues (Mr. Bryant) and Leatherman gets what he wants.

The government regulates (and bans) all manners of medical procedures, devices and drugs. Why and how should abortion be any different. The government (FDA) basically sentenced Mr. Tommy Taylor of Gilbert, SC to death because his clinical trial ended and his device wasn’t approved. If Lee Bright and the SC legislature wants to ban abortion and they have the backing of their constituents who elected them why should we stop them?

Regulating isn’t arbitrarily banning. The government should stay out of relations between physicians and their patients. This should be dogma to Republicans who claim to adore limited government.

That is why the abortion question is so divisive. On one hand the govt. shouldn’t be involved in the abortion question at all then at the same time the basic premise of our country is life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is a hard subject but I come down on the side of life.

Instead of focusing on matters of liberty and issues that affect our financial well-being, all the modern “Republicans” seem to be capable of doing is pandering to the religious nuts about abortion and gay marriage. This is why I find it increasingly more difficult to vote for Republican candidates with each trip to the polls. On issues of liberty and financial concerns, these twits are starting to make the Democrats loom downright conservative.

#1. Will this new law regarding pregnancies after 20 weeks change any of the rules regarding pregnancy after 24 weeks?
#2. If the woman is an adult, isn’t 20 weeks a sufficient time to report rape or incest and/or to get an abortion?
#3 Would this new law allow abortions resulting from rape or incest at any time up to 40 weeks that are not currently allowed?

I may need some education is this new law, but fits is not clear on the issues I raise.

I don’t think he will be re-elected unless he comes from a highly uneducated populace. Maybe he is popular because he blames the government for all his misfortunes. I don’t want to destroy the man. I was once a big fan of his. I know, shocker.

When he ran for Senate, blamed the government for all his failures, turned around and proposed his “personhood” bill, I lost respect. He is nothing more than a politician, in my opinion. What should the government have done to save his failed business decisions? Bail him out too? So much for limited government.

The article gave examples, including one woman who was picketing the clinic that did her abortion the day before, and was back on the picket lines the next day. Such hypocrisy!!!! I get the feeling this happens more than we even suspect.

I don’t know but i miss his sane reasonable postings.
Choosing the option of abortion is one of the most difficult things a woman would do or her man support but throughout time abortions have been performed.
Trying to outlaw abortion is like trying to outlaw drugs or making illegal whiskey. You can reduce abortion by legislation but it will not go away.
If abortion is outlawed it will go back to the old days of shady unsanitary locations for the desperate women or off-shore sanitary facilities for the well-heeled women and/or the well-helled dudes who knocked them up or “little Debbie’s” mom & dad who don’t want their precious daughter carrying some bastard around.
Passing legislation outlawing abortion is just a way for some to think it has gone away – just like they did back in the 1950’s.

Since these politicians have leglislated that women view the their babies in their abdomen via ultrasound prior to an abortion than everyone should be made to view a public excution or watch men and women blown to hell during a war or smell the flesh of victims after a napalm strike.
Like I’ve posted before, the only group that are not hypocrites on this issue of being against all three (abortion, capital punishment and war)are the Quakers. You have to say that all three are ways of life (or death as the case may be). You can’t say “I’m pro-life but not against capital punishment or war” or “I’m against war and capital punishment but I’m pro-choice”
Killing is killing – you just have to “live” with that.

Sen. Lee Bright is a hero to me and to the multitudes of others from my organization Save The 1 who were also conceived in rape or mothers from rape. He gets it — you punish rapists, not babies. How hard is that to understand?! If this were any other people group, you wouldn’t dare support such blatant dehumanizing and demoralizing discrimination. But you’ve just become accustomed to children conceived in rape being the whipping boy of the pro-life movement, the sin-eaters, the scapegoats, cannon fodder, pawns. Well, we are not your pawns! Why don’t you blame the other pro-life Senators who insisted on the rape exception? The blame squarely falls with them!

Reply
Garbage May 15, 2015 at 2:44 pm

What about mother? What crime did she commit? A victim who bears the brunt of rapist. Yes, she can put the baby up for adoption, AFTER one term of daily reminders of the horrible incident that she relives over and over. Worries if her child might be like the man that raped her, which she may know nothing about. Ever.

Where are her rights? For those mothers who chose to keep a baby and were raped, kudos. I think I might too. That is a personal choice. Not one to be legislated.
