“BUSINESS” ADVOCATE IN HOT WATER OVER “AGGRESSIVE” ADVOCACY …

|| By FITSNEWS ||  This website has precisely zero use for the so-called S.C. Business and Industry Political Education Committee (SC BIPEC).  How come?  Well, six years ago we busted them shamelessly kowtowing to liberal leaders in the S.C. General Assembly.  Which is obviously a far cry from “promoting and protecting the free, private and competitive enterprise system through research and education” –  which is what the group claims to be doing.

Anyway, SC BIPEC and its leader – consummate insider Tom DeLoach – were back in action this week, subserviently carrying the water on behalf of a so-called “free market” liquor bill (a piece of legislation this website has repeatedly exposed as nothing but a shameless special interest sop).

Obviously insiders shilling for powerful interests is nothing new, but DeLoach is said to have taken his “advocacy” to the extreme this week, with one lawmaker telling FITS he made threats against him – and a female colleague – over the liquor legislation.

“He said he would issue a bad report card on us by cherry picking certain votes and saying those voters were representative of a member’s record,” the lawmaker told FITS. “Then he said he would tell member companies of his association to withhold donations from us – and (hinted) they would even fund our political opponents.”

“Tom made it clear to me that there was a price to pay for not doing what he asked,” another lawmaker told us.

Wow …

How about that?

And all this fluff and bluster on behalf of these guys?  Sheesh …

According to our sources, one of the lawmakers reported DeLoach’s threatening comments to the chairman of the subcommittee considering the liquor legislation – and to S.C. House judiciary committee chairman Greg Delleney.

Before long, news of DeLoach’s antics had spread like wildfire on the House floor – with several SC BIPEC donors receiving angry calls from lawmakers.

“It got heated,” one lawmaker told FITS.  “One BIPEC member told me he would be speaking to Tom.  He was angry that Tom had done that.”

As we’ve said repeatedly, we don’t favor liquor regulation of any sort, but we refuse to sit back and watch existing state laws be ignored in such a manner as to artificially raise prices on consumers.  And we oppose any effort to “reform” those laws in ways that will only jack those prices even higher.

Clearly supporters of the legislation have become increasingly frustrated by their inability to move this bill forward – which is why they are now resorting to intimidation tactics.

Those efforts didn’t work, by the way, as lawmakers were insufficiently intimidated by DeLoach and dealt the bill he was aggressively advancing yet another defeat.

Libertarians, would do themselves a service as coming across as fiscal conservative, which they are. I am surprised how many people, in the know, actually think L(l)ibertarians are in agreement on fiscal issues with Democrats. Social? Absolutely. Fiscal? Absolutely not.

Reply
FastEddy23 May 13, 2015 at 9:41 pm

Those of us who consider ourselves to be small “l” libertarian would more likely say “Social? Usually. Fiscal? Almost always”.

You see, the U.S. Constitution does provide for a certain amount of watchfulness from a government like courts and military, which are never cheap if one requires fairness and justice.

Garbage May 13, 2015 at 9:51 pm

I am hopeful to hear from some other small “l” libertarians, but I think we all have different flavors of capitalism and that is what I am trying to understand.

I don’t share the social markets view. I am more of a laissez-faire capitalist.

Garbage May 13, 2015 at 10:01 pm

How do social markets make friends with libertarians? Below is their platform, which advocates for smaller government, the ability to keep the fruits of their labors, free market banking with unrestricted competition. I question if anyone really knows what that platform means?

Those fighting the rich cats, are siding with the enemy. True free markets, end up a monopoly that suffocate the small business. History proves it. History also proves, given the opportunity, we might still have monopoly on oil and steel worldwide.

Some want to argue that isn’t fair. What is fair? What kind of system are we fighting for? Or are we wheels in the wind with no direction, just guessing where we might land and the gravity of that landing?

Anyone who can articulate the type of market they think fit, and why. I am very interested in hearing the details. Or are we sheep being herded under a new brand?

I don’t consider this free markets. I consider the following “state markets” :

“As we’ve said repeatedly, we don’t favor liquor regulation of any sort, but we refuse to sit back and watch existing state laws be ignored in such a manner as to artificially raise prices on consumers.”

In a true free market system, why are we concerned about competing with other states? Competition within the US will drive costs down.

Flood the market with liquor, but before you do, be sure to invest. Get as many licenses as you can.

Point of order:

A free market wouldn’t require a license.

What kind of free markets do you wish to talk about Trouble? It is the market socialist? Anarchists? Cooperative? Or a laissez-faire capitalist system?

That is the problem we have with defining free markets. What are free markets to you?

I thought the same true, but there is a difference. Completely free markets would support TPE and TPP. It would also support monopolies.
Huge differences pointed out on another thread. I will post so you can tell me which you agree with.

No need to post, it is on the main thread we are discussing. What kind of free market do you support?

It is the market socialist? Anarchists? Cooperative? Or a laissez-faire capitalist system? Or other?

ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I told you. We’re an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.
ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified
at a special biweekly meeting.
ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,–
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: –but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more–
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh — who does he think he is?
ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn’t vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don’t vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, ‘ow did you become king then?
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake,
[angels sing]
her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur.
[singing stops]
That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen — strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well you can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!

TPE & TPP?

What is that?

” It would also support monopolies.”

If a company provides the best product for the best price, & develops a voluntary monopoly as a result, who cares?

The only way it can hold on to said monopoly is by continuing to provide the best product for the best price in the absence of government coercion.

In a truly free market, the consumer picks winners & losers…all without force, meaning voluntarily.

Garbage May 13, 2015 at 11:35 pm

TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) & TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership).

Many articles on the case and I am not biased on which to read, but here is a random one that explains in layman terms: http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/12/politics/free-trade-fast-track-vote/

I differ with you on monopolies, only because I studied them and how dirty they were. It is an equivalent of drug cartel.

What I really want to know is what does this site claim as free trade? I think we each have a different definition of a very broadly used term. I’d like a real definition instead of mincing words.

TroubleBaby May 13, 2015 at 11:46 pm

” I’d like a real definition instead of mincing words.”

All you have to do is read the dictionary and use the words there.

As for the “site’s opinion”, it varies and is not consistent.

“I differ with you on monopolies, only because I studied them and how dirty they were. ”

Then you should study some more and ask yourself how monopolies get enforced on a voluntary or involuntary basis.

“TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) & TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership).”

Neither of those qualify as “free trade” as defined by the dictionary.

Garbage May 14, 2015 at 12:01 am

so you admit it is not a completely free market that you propose. You just don’t know what flavor of free market you are supporting.

I have a dictionary and encyclopedia. I also have multiple books on economics.

What I don’t have is a single person’s definition of free-trade. I seriously doubt most even know what it is or how it affects them.

My proposal is to figure out what exactly you are supporting and why. How will it impact you and your family? You children? Grandchildren? Future of America.

You won’t find that in a dictionary Trouble.

TroubleBaby May 14, 2015 at 12:14 am

“You won’t find that in a dictionary Trouble.”

I won’t find the definition of “free trade” in the dictionary?

What if I look up the word “free”, then “trade”?

“so you admit it is not a completely free market that you propose.”

I’m sorry, I must end the discussion because I’m unable to communicate with you in a way that you can understand.

Please accept my apologies. Best of luck.

Monopolies that are not regulated, in today’s terms illegal, allow price fixing and discrimination, exclusive dealings, boycotts and tying contract.

Price Fixing: competitors agree to buy or sell products or services at a fixed price or rate

Price Discrimination: selling similar goods to buyers at different prices

Exclusive Dealings: requiring a buyer or seller to do buy or sell all or most of a certain product from a single supplier

Group Boycotts: competitors agree to boycott a certain entity

Tying Contract: selling a product or service on the condition that the buyer agrees to also buy a different product or service

Prior to the Sherman Act of 1890, Standard Oil exploited the unregulated, “free market” economy.

As given to me, the story goes that around 1915 in the heat of a debate Congressman Johnson of Indiana called an Illinois representative a jackass. The expression was unparliamentary,
and in retraction Johnson said: “While I withdraw the unfortunate
word, Mr. Speaker, I must insist that the gentleman from Illinois
is out of order.”

“How am I out of order?” yelled the man from Illinois.

“Probably a veterinary surgeon could tell you,” answered Johnson, and that was parliamentary enough to stay on the record.

You are obviously trying to get me to talk about the infamous BLOW JOB that Wayne Gray got in the parking lot of Fuddruckers from a city employee a few years back, or you would not be mentioning him favorably in the same paragraph as me, in a comment directed my way.

He’s not a major target of my ire *** at this time *** so I’ll make it short. its more complicated than that. “Free Market” is defined in 2 potentially conflicting ways. It can either mean deregulation, or supporting small business. Republicans historically (not really anymore though) have supported small business, and thats often how voters see it, because it create a market place where small businesses can compete with big businesses on a level playing field. that competition is what generates a “free market” because there is no market without competition. This is what the voters expect out of free market practices. competition drives down prices so voters like it

HOWEVER it also can be translated to deregulation, which is the government getting out of the way of competitors which always gives the upper hand to big business so you no longer have a level playing field. the lack of competition drives up prices which voters dont want, however if you vote against deregulation and a level playing field for market competitors you are still against the free market.

THEREFOR when DeRoach could point to the liquor bill votes and YAY or NAY could say they voted against the free market. looks like the political double speak is finally starting to catch up with lawmakers, however its only the lobbyest who will benefit from it because they are the most well versed in it and know how to use it to their advantag3e
