Carly Fiorina Opposes “Obamatrade”

CANDIDATE “UNCOMFORTABLE” WITH CRONY CAPITALIST TRADE DEAL …

|| By FITSNEWS || Newly minted GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina has passed her first free market hurdle … opposing a crony capitalist deal masquerading as “free trade.”

In an interview with radio host Laura Ingraham this week, Fiorina said she supported free and fair trade – but opposed giving the administration of Barack Obama the authority to bypass Congress in negotiating and implementing a new Asian trade deal.

“I’m uncomfortable with this deal and giving him trade authority,” Fiorina told Ingraham. “I know from personal experience that the Chinese have not lived up to their agreements when they entered the WTO.  In other words, partners can cheat on these deals, and we have evidence of partners cheating on these deals.”

Fiorina joined fellow GOP presidential contenders Mike Huckabee (HERE) and Donald Trump (HERE) in opposing this deal – which would put U.S. workers at a severe competitive disadvantage (in more ways than one).

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal – another name mentioned as a possible 2016 “Republican” candidate – is also opposed.

“This is an extremely complicated deal, a multilateral deal with a lot of details that we don’t know about,” Fiorina said.  “And Obama and his administration has demonstrated their inability to negotiate a good deal.  And so look, I think the devil’s in the details, and we better understand what these details are before we just assume it’s a good deal.”

Amen to that … in fact the secrecy surrounding this deal is one reason why we’ve consistently said the U.S. Congress should not surrender its vital investigatory and oversight role in conducting and implementing trade agreements.

Rick Manning of Americans for Limited Government (ALG) – the group which has been leading the fight against “Obamatrade” – praised Fiorina’s decision.

“Carly Fiorina’s questioning the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal is a big deal,” Manning said.  “Joining Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, and Donald Trump in opposition to granting trade promotion authority to President Obama to negotiate the deal now nationalizes the debate.  Fiorina’s experience as a multinational corporation CEO who has dealt with countries who cheat on trade makes her voice particularly important as Congress considers fast track.”

“Obamatrade” is a two-part deal.  The first part is “trade promotion authority” (TPA) – or “Fast Track” – which refers to the ability of Obama to unilaterally write and enforce the second part of the deal.  That’s the so-called “Trans-Pacific Parternship” (TPP) – a massive trade deal with Pacific Rim nations.

The former is basically a blank check to the Obama administration to impose the latter – a special interest, crony capitalist bonanza that would benefit liberal Hollywood elites and wealthy bailout recipients on Wall Street at the expense of U.S. workers.

Obamatrade is bad for America (see HERE and HERE) – and it’s especially bad for South Carolina (HERE and HERE).   That’s why we’ve called on the Palmetto State’s “conservative” congressional delegation to oppose it – joining those responsible members of the U.S. Congress who have already taken a stand.

We’re glad to see Fiorina oppose Obamatrade.  And Manning is correct: Her private sector perspective matters in this debate.
