“IBRAHIM” NEARLY DIED … A MONTH AGO
|| By FITSNEWS || The leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was gravely wounded during an American air strike more than a month ago. In fact his wounds were so severe ISIS leaders held an urgent meeting in anticipation of naming a new leader successor.
Ibrahim – a.k.a. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – suffered his injuries during a March 18 air strike on a convoy of vehicles near the border of Syria, according to a new report by The (U.K.) Guardian. The forty-three-year-old militant is recovering – but has yet to resume day-to-day control of the terrorist operation.
The airstrike that injured al-Baghdadi took place near the village of Umm al-Rous in al-Baaj – a district of Nineveh. Three individuals were reportedly killed in the attack – although American military leaders had no idea the ISIS “caliph” was among the wounded.
Before everyone gets all “U.S.A.!! U.S.A.!!!” in response to this news, remember al-Baghdadi was detained and inexplicably released from U.S. custody in 2009.
How come? His captors apparently did not view him as a threat, even though he allegedly told them he would “see them in New York” upon his release.
Unlike the broader “War on Terror,” U.S. air strikes have been successful in targeting certain militant leaders. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the former leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, was killed by an American bomb in 2006. Last December, Abu Muslim al-Turkmani – one of the ISIS caliph’s top deputies – was killed in an American air strike along with the terrorist organization’s military leader in Iraq.
Assuming air strikes like these are supported by credible evidence of an imminent threat against the U.S. homeland, we have no problem with such targeted actions … although it’s worth pointing out the death of a caliph could be the birth of an even more powerful martyr.
