SC Speaker: Governor Should Apologize To House

SPARKS FLY AS NIKKI HALEY’S “SHOWER” COMMENT RILES LAWMAKERS …

|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. Speaker of the House Jay Lucas took to the well of the chamber he leads this week – invoking a rarely used point of personal privilege to respond to recent comments made by governor Nikki Haley.

According to the powerful legislative leader, Haley owes the House an apology for recent comments in which she suggested those visiting the S.C. State House should “take a shower” upon leaving.

“Because I know many of you are going to the State House, which I love, just make sure you take a good shower when you leave,” Haley told a trade group.

She also ripped lawmakers for not knowing “what it means to truly live day to day.”

Does she?  Well … it depends on which income estimate you’re talking about.

Anyway, Lucas rebuked the governor – and demanded an apology.

“I think comments of the governor were below the office,” he said.

Other legislative leaders were more blunt …

“The governor’s unchecked hypocrisy and sophomoric attacks should be challenged,” one legislative leader told FITS.

Democrats concurred.

“It’s (comments like this) that remind us that Nikki Haley is the youngest governor in America,” S.C. minority leader Todd Rutherford said.  “Hopefully one day she will mature.”

What’s driving this back and forth?

The debate over funding for roads and bridges … an issue this website has addressed extensively over the last few months (and years).

Lucas’ floor speech came on the heels of a letter sent to Haley’s office inviting her to negotiate with House members over a solution to the state’s infrastructure issue – which as we’ve repeatedly pointed out is the result of a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

“Rather than issuing a preemptive veto threat, I invite you to continue to engage in open discussions with the House to craft mutually agreeable legislation,” Lucas wrote.

He also assured Haley that House members were “also working on a responsible income tax reduction that will not jeopardize our state’s credit rating.”

Haley’s proposed tax swap would immediately raise gas taxes in exchange for eventual reductions in the individual income tax.  Of course Haley’s backers aren’t convinced

Then there’s the governor’s hypocrisy on this issue …

Earlier this session, Haley vowed to veto $500 million worth of borrowing (including money earmarked for infrastructure) passed by a House subcomittee.

While we supported the governor’s position, it was highly hypocritical.  After all, two years earlier she signed into law a much bigger borrowing package – and before that she approved extensive borrowing on behalf of crony capitalist kingpin Boeing.

Haley has also embraced many of the wasteful projects driving the so-called infrastructure “shortfall” – and on top of that she recently appointed a tax-hiking liberal lobbyist to lead her chronically cash-strapped S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

Despite all this, Haley recently lambasted House members as not being sufficiently “conservative.”

They’re not … but neither is she.

(Though she is no flower!)

“After visiting your reps,

I advise a good shower!”

She was just offering the realtors a little constructive advice. It didn’t have anything to do with the legislature.

Funny that she is starting to channel Sanford now. Must be because he has made such a major impact in DC.

No, wait …

Great idea! Take a packet of hand cleanser along if you’re going to a meeting with Nikki, and use it in her presence when you’re done. Especially if you had to shake hands with her. If only a few of us would do that I bet the impact would be enormous!

Haley is a user! I know many, including myself, she used to get where she is, helped her raise money, campaigned for her, defended her and as soon as she gets what she wants, you are a used paper cup and in the trash you go!

I knew a seasoned and kind of tough official at a large state agency agency who used to regularly have to meet with the legislature. He too said “He felt like he needed to take a shower” after returning. They ARE dirty.

Please leave Lucas alone! He is a rare breed….A house speaker still in his diapers. Please, Lucas, tell you momma to potty train you at least now. This is embarrassing. Really…you got hurt at Sticky Nicky calling you dicky…get over it drama boy…be a man. There is a lot worse the citizens of South Carolina are going through, even as you weep for a rude poke at you….for example thousands are out of job…dont know where their next meal is coming from, their kid’s future is in ruins…there is no hope for many….just stop your nonsense drama and get you numb nuts together and do something for the people.

I’m glad she’s starting not to care who she pisses off especially when she does it to her allies/supporters since she doesn’t need them anymore. I love it.

Haley should NOT apologize. I have been involved with some legislators in a matter over the past few years. I have worked among them for decades. From the first meeting with every single senator and representative, the issue of “what is in it” for that legislator is No. 1 on the agenda.
