|| By FITSNEWS || This website endorsed S.C. Senator Larry Grooms in his failed 2013 bid for the U.S. Congress – believing him to be the most pro-free market candidate in the race. Turns out that was a terrible mistake … which we realized a few months after the election when Grooms stabbed fiscal conservatives in the back by advancing a totally unnecessary highway project.
Well guess what … Grooms is screwing limited government supporters over again, helping to advance a gas tax hike that would penalize the Palmetto State’s motorists for his own failure to adequately prioritize spending.
We wrote on the proposal that cleared Grooms’ Senate committee last week, but this week a prominent national advocacy group is laying into him for his treachery.
“With big government politicians and lobbyists clamoring for gas tax hikes, South Carolinians needed a fiscal champion,” the narrator of the ad states. “Instead we got Larry Grooms.”
Ouch!
Produced by Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the spot assails Grooms for being a hypocrite – one who brands himself as a taxpayer advocate but then sells taxpayers out when they “need him most.”
“After nearly twenty years in the Senate, Grooms wants us to believe he stands up for taxpayers,” the narrator continues. “But when we needed him most he let us down. Grooms want to pass a 120 percent gas tax hike – just when we started to feel some relief at the pump he wants more of our money for mass transit and bicycle trails.”
The ad closes by encouraging taxpayers to contact Grooms, and “tell him to oppose all gas tax hikes.”

South Carolina politicians who accommodate the status quo on this issue deserve to be blasted … and we’re glad to see Grooms taking one squarely in the grundle (especially in light of his prior sellouts on infrastructure-related issues).
More to the point: We keep hearing the fiction that South Carolinians support gas tax hikes. This ad is yet another reminder that they most assuredly do not.

Good God!Anyone who has met this fellow and talked to him for a few minutes will rapidly see that he isn’t the brightest bulb around and will say or do anything.
God forbid a legislator – one with strong conservative credentials – decides to make some tough decisions to help this damn state. Rather than play flipping politics and offer no solutions.
AFP comes in and makes a mess. Then they are gone and our roads still suck.
It costs you more now because of roads and traffic than it would to raise the gas tax. Makes no sense.
Sen Grooms, keep doing what is right. Just because SC conservative are so dumbe they get led around by the nose by every out of state interest group doesn’t make them right.

The basic rule of economics would imply what goes up must come down, but that does not seem to be the case when they increase the prices of basic needs. I don’t ever recall a time groceries went down? Heck, I still remember nickel candy bars….

The government, at every level, always finds new ways to tax and spend and continues to expand.
I don’t think we are at the point of tax exile yet (Rolling Stones), but I am opposed to tax increases.
I can’t say I blame companies like Boeing/GE or any other company/individual that can find a way to lower their taxes. I only wish we find a way to lower ours.

The point of the posting above, SC finally ranks above average even good at #3 in one area, and they are quick to “fix” it (sarcasm)
Whatever they need to do to FIX THESE DAMNED ROADS needs to be done. Why not add a dime/gallon to the gas tax PLUS add the sales tax (the counties with the extra 2% should be overjoyed to get their cut of the pie) PLUS do away with the stupid sales tax cap on cars (I drive a 1986 Isuzu – my wife has a 2011 Lexus).
Drive north on I-77 and lose a windshield to the loose gravel from the crappy pavement at Blythewood, and again at SC-34; same in several places on I-26 above Newberry (and a small place at the Newberry-Richland county line). While the insurance fixes it free, your premiums still go up, and even if they come to your home to fix it, you never get the time back. Even the concrete part of 77 is not in good shape (after all, sand is cheaper than portland cement) and they already had to rebuild the part of 77 above the Shell station at the Winnsboro-Great Falls Hwy.
Might use some of those “newly appropriated funds” to reinstate the “independent engineers” (now all fired for finding fraud) that used to inspect individual batches of asphalt and concrete.

Show me the fraud waster and abuse or STFU. Over and over, inaction is rationalized by sloganeering like “we shouldn’t do this until the waste, fraud, and abuse, are eliminated”, or “until misplaced priorities are sorted out”…Once again, Brownback in KS commissioned a task force to find waste etc in the KS budget because this was his mantra too. As much as they wanted to find to make their boss look god, they came back with peanuts. You can’t fix real problems with these approaches. Besides, the waste, fraud, and abuse crowd talks about it forever. So why, if it significant, is someone not going into budgets with fine toothed combs and red pens and coming back with findings and specific recommendations? Maybe because the Club for Growth or other anti-tax group tell folks to say it
Unfortunately, the same crummy politically connected contractors that installed the shabby–but uninspected–pavement in the first place will get selected and paid to do it (poorly) again. And a bunch of the rest of the money will go to unneeded and widely unwanted “pork”-project new roads.
I would without complaint pay higher gas taxes if I had even the mere real hope that the money would be spent well. But what are the chances?

Without a gas (or other) tax increase, SC DOT may actually have to put some of the jobs out to bid …

No concrete here….and having lived in Detroit prior to the “big fall”, I can tell you the initial extra cost of concrete far outweighs the savings on asphalt in the long haul….(at lest in Northern climates)

They pass a gasoline tax increase, I guarantee you that they will have tens of thousands of South Carolinians wanting to get right in their faces and punching them in the mouth. These douche bags are inciting the citizens of this state to resort to paying them visits at their homes and places of business – even in public places where they like to dine or have drinks.

It is my understanding that the Senate bill brought fourth by Senate Clary increases the Gas User Fee. That is not a tax.

I would happily pay a higher gas tax to get our roads fixed. They are a disgrace. I broke a spring on a trailer after it bounced through a pothole. I could have paid a lot of gas tax for the price of fixing that trailer!
