|| By FITSNEWS || Richland County officials have identified the 18-year-old University of South Carolina fraternity student who died this week as Charlie Terreni, Jr. – a Columbia, S.C. native (and son of a prominent local attorney).
FITS was provided with Terreni’s name shortly after the first wave of news reports hit, but we declined to publish it (given the criticism we took the last time somebody died on the USC campus).
An autopsy on Terreni’s body did not uncover any signs of trauma, although toxicology results have yet to be released.
As we noted in our coverage of Terreni’s death, it’s been a rough academic year for fraternal organizations in South Carolina – which has movers and shakers at the S.C. State House beginning to take notice.
“I loved my fraternity experience and I did dumb things,” one such well-connected politico told FITS. “But I’m thinking it may be time to do something extreme about them.”
We have some thoughts on that subject … but for the time being we’re going to follow the lead of S.C. Rep. Kirkman Finlay, who asked for (and received) a moment of silence on Terreni’s behalf on the floor of the S.C. State House.

Paying for friends and popularity doesn’t always equal happiness or harmony.
I wonder if the fratboy hadn’t been some son of a “prominent local attorney” would there have been a moment of silence on the House floor? Prep boy likely drank himself to death or pulled a Jimi Hendrix.
I hope to God that his family doesn’t read your comment. What is so wrong in your life that would make you say something so insensitive? I guess you’ve never lost a loved one.
What does a frat boy dying have to do with disrupting a legislative session? Face it, if the kid wasn’t politically motivated his name wouldn’t have been mentioned. If Joe Washington, a student at Aiken Tech and son of a Walmart employee, dies today will his name be mentioned in the next House session?

Probably. But Fits would not publish an article about it and we would never hear about it.
Never mind.
I’ve lost lots. Not one of them was honored by a moment of silence on the House floor.
This isn’t a place to come if you can’t handle a little “hot sauce”. This was an alcohol related death as I indicated last night.
What a despicable dumb ass you are! Shut your damn mouth and go back into your cave! I try hard not to cuss too much, but your are a jerk!
Oh no, Guest is upset with me. Excuse me but my Give-A-Fuck meter appears to be broken.
We must tee ’em up sometime. Where do you keep your handicap old chum? I’m sure we know many of the same people.
I keep my handicap locked in the basement, just like everyone else.
Heartbroken. I’ve known him since he was little. Fine family. Fine young man.
Not to nitpick, but do they hold a moment of silence for every college student in SC who dies?
That being said, condolences for his friends and family.
No, only rich connected ones.
Rich and connected beats poor and resentful every time. I’ll bet you’ve been a loser since first grade. Probably the kid with the mom in curlers dropping you off in the Maverick. Your college buddies wore all black, lace up boots and hung out with loud fat chicks from up north. You have spent at least a couple nights in a trailer owned by a relative.
Mmkay, sounds good.
the email sent out late today by Pastides was very limited. Probably worrying about political fallout and afraid to say too much.
Dear Carolina Family,
Although the arrival and promise of spring is imminent, we find we are, once
again, dealing with untimely and tragic loss within our community. Patricia and
I are deeply concerned by such difficult news and by the tremendous sense of
sadness that it brings to our campus.
During the days and weeks ahead, I would like to ask each of you to make an
extra effort to reach out to one another. Please lend a listening ear and a
generous heart to those who are experiencing sorrow and grief. And let us take
time to reflect on how we can come together, individually and collectively, to
apply the guiding principles of Stand Up Carolina to
strengthen and protect our community.
I offer my personal condolences and prayers for the families who are grieving.
May our compassion relieve a small part of their burden.
he doesn’t even use the kid’s name.
Probably just a boilerplate letter he had his secretary pull up and send out.
Please lend a listening ear…how about some transparency at USC? How about some official statements who is dean and who is not – all interims, not renewed, fired?, left?
…and a generous heart? How about a pay raise?, how about some facilities where the roof doesn’t leak and the air handler doesn’t spew out dirt? How about some help for student’s book costs? how about some class rooms that can take more than 300 students?
…sorrow and grief?…I’m beyond that – i just want to be part of higher education again – not a diploma mill where kids and their parents pay for degrees and diplomas that will not help them!
…time to reflect? You’ve had 7 years of athletics expansion, loss of faculty (including member of national academy) and decline of infrastructure while your “city on the hill” – the athletics village has facilities we can only dream of – no more!
strengthen and protect our community? besides athletics, alumni, frats who do you care about? the average prof who has to teach 300 freshmen and is underpaid? the adjuncts who take more and more of the teaching load? the facilities people who have to try and keep this rusty oil tanker afloat? NO – you rearrange the deck chairs in Osborne and spend most of your time doing NCAA business…
You are the burden….
wow – sounds like we got a bit of anger built up in the ivory tower!
You should realize you are not at Harvard here. Athletics will always be more important than academics at USC. As you see the one member of the National Academy is leaving – you won’t be happy here. You should follow his example.
These sportsmorons help explain why SC at large continues to be mediocre . . . or worse. Is sponsoring a NASCAR team too blue collar (or red neck) for USC’s image? What else can explain its conspicuous absence in the popular “sports lineup” of what was supposed to be an educational institution? If you goobers didn’t notice what was going on there academically, scientifically, and in engineering, well, really, where would be the loss?
Once you’ve firmly established the University of Phoenix here in Columbia and continue to grow USC’s professional college sports empire don’t be surprised if the only other asset you have is a great bass fishing lake with nice recreational opportunities.
You are at best ‘second world quality’ in a beautiful place with great climate – no more.
What gets USC in the news? It’s not the latest book of some philosophy professor or some equation only 5 mathematics professors around the world can understand – no its our gamecock football team and our ‘ladycocks’ who will go all the way. Go Gamecock. Go Pastides – you liberal professor types can go to Boston or California – if you are good enough. Pastides will make sure that athletics will lead the way and for now show some respect and STFU.
“ladycocks”, you mean Gamecunts? Actually I’ve seen them, there’s not much “lady” in them.
Pastides is worried (a) his basketball viewing and cheer leading will be interrupted, (b) his neglect of anything but athletics and alumni will become publicly known and (c) donations will drop because he has to curtail activities of frat houses.
Second that – he is completely detached from what is going on in the colleges and class rooms. We loose provost, three deans are not renewed, another one (my dean) just announced he will no longer be dean while we have to deal with huge freshmen classes and inadequate class rooms for them. I am so sad about all these kids and how we have to teach them while athletics builds palaces and has multiple tutors for the ones that happen to be athletes. All I hear is sports, sports, sports…..look at his twitter account. That’s not the higher education I signed up for!
What deans are leaving?
Dr. Ambler Engineering is not renewed – there will be a search
Dr. Fitzpatrick, Arts and Sciences “moves up” to systems chancellor – there will be a search
in both cases no interim deans have been officially appointed. We will have to wait until March Madness is over.
Dr. Amirides, provost has left to Chicago. interims in place and search is on.
Dr Ken Rifsnider (only member of National Academy) is going to UT Arlington, to do the same thing, also first smart state chair to leave, I think a search is approved
Dr Mihalik, Hospitality, Retail and Sport management is not renewed
Dr Watson, Education will not continue
Pharmacy is vacant at the moment…..
a few minor corrections and additions
It is Reifsnider and he is the only member of the National Academy of Engineering – the only other Member of the National Academy of Science is Richard Webb. Yes Dr. Reifsnider is leaving:
http://www.uta.edu/news/releases/2015/01/reifsnider-hired.php
and The search for Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management is on…..
and yes it is a mess!
Pastides has always been and always will be nothing more than a mouthpiece for the Board of Directors. He doesn’t do a thing without first getting their blessing, which is why they continue to give him huge raises and bonuses.
Man, some of you people are complete fucking assholes.
Thank you, now go back an do whatever the fuck you were doing before you decided to give us your opinion.
Come on man, show some respect for someone who’s willing to sell property in this god forsaken city. Wonder if the SC Realtor® Association would endorse his colorful language?
Realtor, one of those well respected professions that you can earn from taking a weekend course and leasing a luxury vehicle. And speaking of “complete fucking assholes”, that pretty much describes any realtor I’ve dealt with, the only time they aren’t is when they’re kissing your ass because they think they can make a dime off of you.
Pretty sure there’s a significant correlation between realtors and amway/quickstar “sales” people.

NORTH CAROLINA FRATERNITY latest VICTIM of McCarthyism
The North Carolina State University
chapter of Pi Kappa Phi has been suspended after a student discovered a pledge
book with some pretty disturbing things written inside, including references to
rape and lynching.
Senior Katie Perry found the
book and handed it over to school officials after seeing the offensive material
inside. The university took swift action; suspending the frat and conducting an
investigation.
The national Pi Kappa Phi
organization is also investigating and
their CEO said in a statement, “The written comments and quotes reported
earlier this evening are offensive and unacceptable.”
Pi Kappa Phi is actually one of two
frats in trouble at NC State. The university chapter of Alpha Tau Omega was suspended just weeks ago
after reports of a sexual assault at the frat house.
As a result of the behavior by both
frats, NC State has temporarily banned alcohol
at most fraternity events.
