“THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF WIMPS IN THE STATE HOUSE … AND NO SHORTAGE OF BULLIES IN THE GOVERNOR’S MANSION”
|| By MIA McLEOD || This is bully week … oops … I mean, budget week in the House. And although SC House Republicans are the majority party, they seem to be in the minority when it comes to guts, gumption, courage and leadership.
The showdown started on day one, when Speaker Jay Lucas had us re-do votes that we had already done, simply because governor Nikki Haley launched her cyber-bullying campaign on Facebook. Little did we know … that was only the beginning. All week, she has been bullying her Republican colleagues into submission.
But they’re not the only ones who are being “punked.”
Governor Haley can’t protect our identities from cyber-hackers, but she sure can cyber-bully the South Carolina House.
No bond bill, no additional support for our technical colleges, no pay increase for state employees, no real roads and infrastructure development fix, no funding plan for poor, rural public schools or critical job training and economic development projects.
But more importantly, no voice and no representation for millions of SC voters, who have unknowingly conceded their concerns, interests and futures to a cyber-bullying Governor, who obviously cares more about her personal political aspirations than the people of South Carolina.
Meanwhile, it’s the hard-working citizens of our state who continue to get the short end of the stick.
Clearly, there’s no shortage of wimps in the State House … and no shortage of bullies in the Governor’s Mansion. But taking to facebook and twitter to stifle and un-do the little bit of progress we are able to make when we work together is not only petty. For a Governor who calls herself our state’s top leader, it’s downright deplorable.
If this is governing, South Carolina is in trouble, indeed.
So, are we really gonna allow ourselves to be poked and prodded … pimped and punked … by our Governor—on Facebook?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Petty, partisan politics does absolutely nothing for the people of South Carolina. Our Governor’s actions consistently indicate that she isn’t willing or able to lead by example. But, why can’t House Republicans stand up to her and do what’s best for their constituents and the citizens of this state?
We have an amazing opportunity to do right by the people of South Carolina. All that’s required are real leadership and courage. And you can’t have the former if you don’t have the latter.
So, here’s the deal. I’m gonna lead by example and say what my Republican colleagues didn’t have the guts to … at least not to her face.
Sorry Governor … if you wanted to run the SC House, you should’ve stayed in it. Maybe you would’ve eventually done something for someone other than yourself while you served.
All of us should be able to represent our constituents without undue interference and influence from a former House member who happens to have upgraded her title, but possesses none of the leadership skills that should accompany it.
Instead, many of our Republican colleagues seem more concerned about the Primary opposition she has “promised” them, should they exercise any semblance of courage and independence.
South Carolinians deserve better. House Republicans can do better.
And I’m confident that if Republicans and Democrats ever decide to truly work together for the greater good of all our citizens, South Carolina will finally achieve unprecedented progress and success.
Maybe Governor, you should post … or tweet … that.

While I respect Rep. McLeod for standing up, I don’t agree with her core issues, which seems to be that we need to spend more money:

Across the state few companies are giving pay increases. I wish everyone was paid better, but I don’t think that is realistic given the climate.

Not true. Target was the first example of an executive resigning, it is the outlier. As for Sony the executive resigned to pursue another opportunity and was pressured not because of responsibility for the leak but because of racist content of exposed emails about Obama.

The Spartanburg H/J reported today that 3 people have been arrested for SC tax evasion. Their acts are a pittance compared to the millions South Carolina has spent trying to half-way fix this screw up and we still don’t know who did it or what the outcome will be after almost 3 years.

This was a big week for Haley. The legislature came out looking foolish. So, instead of praising her or at least a nod of respect, critics bring up things from the past.

Mia, it is damaging to real victims of cyber bullies for you to define a civil expression of opinions as cyber bullying. The Governor would not be fulfilling her duties if she didn’t express her opinions. For her to use the Internet to do so is the most democratic and efficient way to do so. In the past the Governor’s statement would have been filtered by the media and you would have to wait through the media cycle.
The legislature violated state law by not recording roll call votes. Haley managed to stop it without insults in one day using Facebook. The House new she was right and corrected it quick. To you these votes seem trivial, but it leads to a gradually erosion of transparency.
As for the bond, again, the state should not be borrowing money during this period of increasing revenue. She expressed her opinion in a civil manor effectively on social media as President Obama has done concerning Homeland security funding and many other issues.
What you resent, Mia, is the democratization that social media has brought to the legislative process. Before the voters could only helplessly complain after decisions were final. Now they can effect the process before hand.

It is not hypocritical to be against some borrowing and for other borrowing in a different situation.
I don’t really agree with that entirely. Debt is debt and you can’t borrow your way out of debt.

If Haley’s argument wasn’t true then it wouldn’t have effected the legislative action. She didn’t force them to do anything. They were exposed publicly and chose to reverse course. Victory for transparency and fiscal responsibility.
so…just so we are on the same page…when Haley borrows millions for Boeing or when she begs the feds to give her a payday advance so her cabinet agency DOT can pay its bills borrowing is OK. However, when the legislature proposes borrowing to get a bunch of stuff done while taking advantage of historic low interest rates its a bad idea…right?

Read Haley’s Facebook (excerpts are posted in this thread) and comparing them with Mia’s comments, it seems clear that Mia is more of a bully than Haley.
Mia seems to think the legislature should do its work in private without comment from the Governor or anyone else. Sorry! Ain’t gonna happen.
Or go directly to Haley’s page – there is also a news article posted. It makes this argument weak at best.
