He’s a conservative/not very moderate Democrat.
Vietnam era Jarhead with a Silver Star and a Navy Cross. If you look up bad ass, he’ll be included on the list of “see also”.
He has a very “Republican” view on race issues: http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748703724104575379630952309408 However, his “stance” on race may be nothing more than the Democrat version of Atwater’s “Southern Strategy”.
Typical of many politicians, he couldn’t “keep his pecker in his pocket” and broke up his first marriage fooling around on his first wife.
He and Bush had a “falderal” about Webb’s son who was a serrving Marine – Webb couldn’t just answer the question Bush asked him about his son, he had to make a political statement. – they later had a “beer at the White House” and kissed and made up.
He might make a good candidate, he has experience (not much executive experience besides being SecNav though and he frankly sucked at that).
He’s “conservative enough” and he isn’t inclined to “lick his finger searching out the prevailing winds”, but I don’t think he can win.
He hasn’t got a chance and anyone who knows ANYTHING about politics knows it
