GOVERNMENT EMPLOYMENT REPORT DRAWS SCRUTINY … AGAIN

|| By FITSNEWS || The number of working age Americans not participating in the labor force surged by 354,000 in February to a record 92,898,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).  As a result, the U.S. labor participation rate inched down to 62.8 percent – just off of its 37-year low.

Not good …

Meanwhile the nation’s unemployment rate declined from 5.7 to 5.5 percent, but once again that reduction was being driven by a shrinking workforce … not sustained job growth.

And while U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez boasted that the “quality of jobs is going up,” more than half of the new jobs created last month (152,000) were in the three lowest-paying sectors of the economy.

Which is why there was zero wage growth … or why average hourly wages rose by an anemic 0.1 percent (missing expectations of 0.2 percent “growth”).

Take a look …

Also, there’s evidence that the government jobs report – which has been prone to manipulation in the past – grossly understated recent job losses in the energy sector.

Specifically, the government report claimed that the energy sector lost only 3,000 jobs during the past two months.  But just yesterday Challenger, Gray and Christmas – a global outplacement consultancy – announced that more than five times that many jobs were shed by energy firms in February alone.

“Once again, the energy sector saw the heaviest job cutting in February, with these firms announcing 16,339 job cuts, due primarily to oil prices,” the firm reported.  “Falling oil prices have been responsible for 39,621 job cuts, to date. That represents 38 percent of all recorded workforce reductions announced in the first two months of 2015.”

Yeah … still trust the government’s numbers?

The jobs report is very good. It is not manipulated. The unemployment rate is very good.

Of course no matter what happens, unless there is someone with an R in the White House, Republicans, like Will Folks, will never admit the economy is doing well.

GrandTango March 6, 2015 at 6:00 pm

The jobs numbers are counting PT jobs, and even multiple assignments of temp jobs for one person as several FT jobs…

There is no sector blowing up. Tech is doing well, as it always does. The fracking business is good, but Obama is doing all he can to damage energy jobs (see Keystone)…

You’re just full of S#!t to claim there is any new life in the economy…people have accepted it will be S#!t until Obama exits office, and we can fix this LARGE F*#king mess he has made w/ Obamacare and the killing of coal, and way overpriced gas, because he is against production…

1,000 jobs per day created over eight years under Georgie Porgie, and 4,000 jobs a day created under Obama over 6 years, with a run rate for 2015 that will make it 5,000 jobs a day over 7 years. Take your pick. Thems is apples to apples. Must suck to have to be faced with actual numberical facts.

Please do not call my push mower “medical equipment”. ObamaCare has a “special” extra tax on all medical machines and equipment.

GrandTango March 7, 2015 at 7:03 am

Remember: when you blame Bush: Bush had GREAT (and REAL) numbers for much of 8 years…so that is NOT an acceptable excuse for Obama, being down for ALL six of his years…

Also: They don’t care to argue reality…they will accept nothing but the myth of a recovery by Obama…and that is a lie…there is NO recovery.

Americans are just hanging on…hoping someone comes in and loosens the chains government is binding us with, via Obama and the Democrat Party…

If you REALLY care, you will find, vote for and support, the MOST Conservative, America-loving candidates…There is no other plan that will work to correct this mess we’re in….

Look, I’m enjoying my coffee this morning. It’s soccer day. I don’t have time to slap your @$$ down with numerical evidence. Suffice to say – you’re full of crap again, as always. Manana.

Rocky March 7, 2015 at 7:48 am

Eddy – really simple math actually. You take ending job numbers (negative or positie) for each year. Add them up, divide by number of years, divide by 12 for months, diviide by 20 for days. It’s just another way of stating that really simple fact, overall, there were more jobs created under Obama than Bush. Guberment actually did very little except set direction. Hiring is generally done by private companies as demand increases. I just throw these facts out to piss of GT – because he’s usually full of sheee-it.

FastEddy23 March 7, 2015 at 8:59 am

OK, fine. Job participation is right now at a 37 year record Low.

“Been down so long it looks like up to me …”

When the Reagan era tax cuts finally kicked in, employment (job participation) and real job creation began the turn around.

SCBlues March 7, 2015 at 12:32 am

Just ask yourself FITS…is your advertising blowing up? Do you see neighbors in high spirits because a spouse got a new job, or salaries are increasing?

There is no energy in the street. There is only malaise, w/ people subconsciously, and consciously, well aware that we’re in a 6-year recession…

What is sparking the economy…if there is a spark. I say NOTHING. All the chatter is based in Bull-$#!t, created to keep Obama from looking like the failure he is, and has been since Day One….

A lot of my neighbors have stay at home spouses. A couple of homes have new roofs. Others are putting in new kitches, bathrooms. I’m getting some trees removed and new plantings. Starting to plan summer vacation. Yeah, I’d say pretty short on malaise, pretty heavy on hurrays, or mayonaise, or yippie for gays. But not a lot of malaise. Also see lots of new cars on the road, except for crappy old BMW – but I’m cheap. Here’s a fact – if the economy wasn’t getting stronger by the hour – Yellen wouldn’t be planning to raise rates in June. Sorry – truth be da truth. And Crapville be Crapville. Some states suck though. Was in Jersey last weekend – they’re hurting – buy hey – they gots faty the conservative Governor. Maybe he’ll turn it around. Oh yeah, he’s had 5 years already and things suck.

Also, there’s evidence that the government jobs report – which has been prone to manipulation in the past – grossly understated recent job losses in the energy sector.

I don’t believe it is politically motivated, but if the energy sector jobs are seasonally adjusted then many workers were already laid off for the winter. Some were also employed shutting down no longer profitable wells. These jobs will show up as lost jobs when they are not employed in the spring.

Also using New Census data, the BLS usually recalculated data back to the last Census year and update their own data for the last five years at the beginning of each year. Extraordinarily, due to a new “time series model” this year they updated data all the way back to January 1976 when the BLS first began calculating state and region data. They change SC first ever unemployment rate from 7.8% to 8.0%. Here is an excerpt from BLS “Technical Note”

In most years, historical data for the most recent 5 years (both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted) are revised near the beginning of each calendar year, prior to the release of January estimates. Though the labor force estimates typically are updated for 5 years, the population estimates are adjusted back to the decennial estimates base (April 2010). With the introduction of a new generation of times- series models in 2015, historical data were re-estimated back to January 1976… http://www.bls.gov/news.release/srgune.tn.htm

Two months of state employment data come out this month. January’s on the 17th and February’s on the 27th. January’s marks 4 years since Haley took office. Fitsnews hasn’t had an article about the monthly release since October. Also forth quarter personal income is released. When the news was bad, he did articles, but December was very good and he didn’t. I’ll comment; good or bad.

The real indicators about big g’ment getting bigger are over a decade long time frame.

Here in Taxifornia big state/county/city g’ment was already expanding in 2004, so the skew / fix was in. But still over 10 years, Taxifornia g’ment has grown more than 140% while actually population, even counting all of the illegals, has grown about 8% to 9%. … And that’s not counting the increases in fed employees! (Example: There are more Taxifornia state/county/city g’ment employees working on homeless questions than there are homeless.)

Because the Baby Boomer generation has reached retirement age, there will be a drop in the employment participation rate, no matter how much the economy grows, for at leat another 15-20 years. Someone born at the start of that generation is now 4 years past full retirement age and seven years past early retirement age.

At the other end of the spectrum, more 18-24 year olds are in college than ever before, and thus not in the workforce yet.

There are several key metrics of our economy that we can compare to establish if we are making progress.
The metric listed in the article is average hourly earnings, is one of those key metrics, but we also have labor force participation rate, and the U6 unemployment rate.

Another key metric is the percent of population receiving SNAP benefits. This number has doubled from 2004 to 2013, from 10% to 20%. These numbers are under both a Republican and Democrat POTUS.
The role of government is to create “opportunity” and not dependence.
