|| By FITSNEWS || Jay Koon will be the next sheriff of Lexington County, S.C. after scoring a convincing electoral victory this week. Koon won a special “Republican” primary election to fill the office vacated by disgraced sheriff James Metts, who was indicted last year on federal corruption charges. The Lexington, S.C. police officer received 58 percent of the vote – easily outdistancing his three opponents for the seat.
With no other candidates on the ballot, Koon will officially claim the office in an April 21 race – and will stand for reelection in November 2016.
Koon won the special election despite concerns about his proximity to Metts’ shady network … known as the “Lexington Ring.”
Another candidate in the race – West Columbia, S.C. police chief Dennis Tyndall – was also linked to the “ring,” a cabal of corrupt politicians and crooked cops accused of running an illegal video poker operation (and other shady ventures) out of Lexington County.
Koon claims he’s got nothing to do with the “ring” – and we hope that’s true. After all, Lexington simply cannot afford another scandal involving those charged to protect the public’s life, liberty and prosperity.
Cops and courts are core functions of government – responsibilities which must be discharged dispassionately (i.e. free from political pressure or personal grudges).
Let’s hope Koon is up to that task …

Yay answered the question I had wondered about regarding the victory celebration. The voters of Lexington County will hand Koon the keys to the Sheriff’s Office as many times as he chooses to run, same as they did with Metts.
I pray that Koon is a good leader. The best man did not win. Thank you to the Old school machine just know karma is a bitch and it will bite you in the ass. Just ask Dennis Tyndall “mr it is my turn to be sheriff” pulled less than 10%. And more karma coming his way.

The rumors about Mr. Koon being part of the “ring” were perpetuated by another candidate and his posse as a last ditch effort when they knew what the turnout was going to be. Glad the community didn’t give into it.

I could tell you about growing up with Ted Pitts and Jay Koon. I could tell you about having Myers and Holderman as neighbors. I could tell you about favorite watering holes and how people cant understand how they make it home when they leave. I could give you references like spending the weekends down in Pelion at D.F.’s old house with the hide outs from the civil war days that is now Franks office.
Spent 20 years working on main street in Lexington, you learn a lot. Camping on Spences plantation back in the day when you could catch 30 or 40 stripers in a couple hours right there off the point. Golfing with Ryan Shealy back in the 70’s as a boy. I could tell you about the time Governor McNair stroked a check for a house my father owned. It’s been a great life growing up here, I hope things get better.

I’ve observed these people use their gals to influence others and milk them for anything they wanted from him. They did the same with Metts.
Their chief operative was Bob’s female concubine. Just watch at one of the local activities, parties, or football tailgating…pathetic! Throw in a few box seats, games, concerts, a little titty rub, close hug, flirt, implied sexual refrences and most have folded like a house of cards.

McCarty has nothing to do with the Ring. He would not give them the time of day. The Ring and it’s associates got nowhere with him. Metts was very rude to McCarty for not cluing him on the investigations he was under. Others of the Ring tried to cause McCarty problems, etc. McCarty was the ONLY reason Metts stayed somewhat clean for all the years prior to McCarty’s retirement. When McCarty retired and Tim James became chief Deputy, The Peelers (next door neighbors and close associates, party people with Frazier) wiggled into Metts and James inner circle. Metts and James were extremely close sycophants (a lap dogs) of the Peelers.
Frazier became Metts butt buddy, channeling bribe money, for which Metts later plead guilty.
None of this would have taken place, had McCarty not retired.
So explain this to all of us. Why did he demand a deputy drop the DUI against his (McCarty) son? When he reused to do so he was fired. Koon’s response was what you mean no one has to call a supervisor before you arrest someone around here. No shit..no lie this happened. Call McCarty and ask him. And who do you think covered for Metts all those years. “The Gold Standard in law enforcement.”

If that happened the Officer would have had a very strong civil case! I don’t think anyone could have withstood the public scrutiny of a firing under those circumstances!
Sheriffs in SC can hire and fire at will. Deputies serve at the Sheriff’s “pleasure”. A deputy has almost no recourse in this state. To make matters worse, any veteran Sheriff knows how to trump up career-ending disciplinaries or even phoney criminal charges that can destroy not only a deputy’s career, but his freedom and his life. All deputies are made aware of this. Don’t think for a minute that Metts never played that card.
McCarty covered for Jamie Lucas’s wife when shecwas a dispatcher for the SO. She sat around selling Pampered Chef products on department time and department phones. She was generally thought to be incompetent. She only left when McCarty retired because she knew she would be firex without him covering for her.

It is sad because most people are nice people, but most people do not think in a manner of not giving complete trust to any one person or thing. Their damage is not intentional but that does not dull the pain they inflict. And when they are confronted with the fact they did harm they get uncomfortable but never learn the lesson. If they ever do it is when they are old and gray and their kids and grandkids are just as naive and inattentive as they were and don’t take the wisdom of their elders. The cycle continues.
We can’t stop the stupids, best we can do is educate and try to lower their numbers that way.

I myself am not thrilled Koon won. There is too much crap around him. But, hopefully with all that happened with Metts he will watch himself. I do feel that the majority of the Lexington crowd that has lived here a long time pretty much fall in line with what the majority say. When you have Haley, The State paper, the current sheriff that is sitting in, you name it, the life time Lexington crowd goes with what they are told. Most don’t take the time to do some research. That is just the way this county has always been. Besides many just really don’t care and don’t take the time to go out and vote for this position. I do believe that Koon was bought and paid for. There is no reason to think that anything in this county will ever change. So, going forward we just really have ourselves to blame.

The one and only good takeaway from this is that Leon Lott will have to content himself with having contro of the Coroner’s Office in LexCo for the next twenty or thirty years. That is, unless he and the Lexington ring can broker an alliance of some kind. I guess his next effort of conquest will be placing a stooge in the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The only link they have of Koon to the ring of corruption was geography. Britt on the other hand was a paid campaign staffer of Joe Wilson. Tyndall is corrupt. Ed Felix would have been the best choice and he used his own money instead.

So far The RING that FITS harps on has produced ONE guilty plea for something that is not even a crime, now.
Maybe Amadio was hoarding confiscated gambling machines, but the video poker law was so fuzzy, I think it will be difficult to get a conviction for hosuing the devices in a business, other than a fine. Irmo had actually issued license for the machines, because it was not clear if they were legal or not…
