A grassroots group is taking S.C. governor Nikki Haley to task for her support of a gasoline tax hike – accusing her of flip-flopping on the issue.
The ad – paid for by the Columbia, S.C.- based group “Citizens for a Free Market” – compares Haley’s 2014 pledge to veto any gas tax hike to former U.S. president George H.W. Bush‘s infamous “read my lips” promise.
“There are moments in history on the national level,” the spot states, referring to Bush’s “no new taxes” promise.
The spot then segues into Haley’s 2014 State of the State speech, in which she vowed to “veto any bill that reaches my desk that raises taxes on gasoline.”

Obviously this ad is poorly written (and very poorly produced). And to be fair to Haley (something we don’t relish doing), her proposal did include a substantial income tax relief component – which she claims would more than offset the gas tax hike.
Do we trust Haley’s math? Hell no … but her plan (for what it’s worth) is a tax swap, not a pure tax hike.
Either way, the governor’s efforts to get her plan through the “Republican-controlled” S.C. General Assembly appear doomed. And not just because of confusion surrounding her tax proposals, but also due to her failure to articulate specific reforms to the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

“Grassroots group”? No, just another Koch-funded sock puppet.
LOL … I guessed this was coming, fur sure.
Hey, Goobmersmacker, is everything that smells of Gruberment takedown a Koch promotion?
Do you have a real job?
I’m seeing your goddamn posts on every page so far…do you have a fucking job?
Yes. Do You?
(I do this before I drive to work and during lunch … And they call me Fast for a reason. Today my 15 minute lunch break went over 1 minutes and 23 seconds … gotta go …)
A dude with a website, kind of like Folks only marginally more influential.
The website and the ad belong to Kerry Woods. Kerry is paid by Leatherman’s “fixer”, Bob McAlester. The aim is to break support for Haley, demoralize the conservative base, and then have the General Assembly pass Leatherman’s gas tax bill.
Kerry is paid to do underhanded stuff for Leatherman on a regular basis. But to be fair, he will do anything for anyone as long as money is involved.
Kerry is the armpit of SC politics. I was a Scott Walker fan until I heard Kerry was working for Walker. I can’t vote for anyone that would hire Kerry Wood.
Isn’t this group Curtis Lofts is helping out? $$$
I read the web site and Mr. Loftis’s web site and there are no connection between them.
Loftis is Leatherman ‘s fixer and carries his water all the time. Two peas in a pod.. nice , comfy and warm, together.
Haha. What a lie. Poor sad soul you are.
Making stupid statements is stupid
He’s voted for every bailout Leatherman has ever wanted at the Budget and Control Board. In fact, upon review of all the minutes of the Board meetings since Lofts was elected, he has voted with Leatherman 98.7% of the time. That’s more than Nikki and Eckstrom.
Gosh, Mickey, I believe everything I see on the Internet.
I believe it is.
Non Common Core math …
South Carolina population:
In 1994 = 4.1 Million
In 2014 = 4.8 Million … a 24% increase over 20 years.
South Carolina government size (county and state):
In 1994 = 135,000 combined
In 2014 = 340,000 combined … a 150% increase over 20 years.
Dough!
The calculation of the number of years is correct. 50% credit.
with this type of flip flopping…”what difference does it make”, haley may run against hillary. they sound alot alike
