“WHAT KIND OF PUBLIC SERVANT DOES THIS TO TAXPAYING CITIZENS?”
Dear Editor: The Chapin Postmaster General is discriminating against our disabled son. He would rather our son get killed trying to get the mail than to have our carrier simply turn around in our yard to safely deliver the mail to our mailbox. Please tell the Postmaster General to stop discriminating against people who have disabilities!
Our house is located near a sharp curve on a very busy road where people often speed. We’ve had to replace our mailbox a number of times because of cars crashing into it. We cannot get to our mailbox without putting our lives in danger. We’ve even had to jump in the ditch to avoid getting hit by cars.
Our disabled son cannot access the mailbox because it’s just too dangerous. I wrote a nice letter to our postmaster general explaining our situation and requesting that we move our mailbox about 15 feet so that our disabled son can access it safely.
He ignored my letter. He refused to return my phone calls.
In the meantime, I talked to our carrier who agreed that the mailbox was in a dangerous location and said she had no problem whatsoever with us moving it a few feet so that we can safely get to it.
Still no word from the postmaster general, so I move the mailbox and we are now able to safely access the box. Problem solved, right? No!
I call and attempt to speak to the postmaster general once again. He refused to come to the phone, but tells the person who answered the phone to tell me he has denied my request to move the mailbox. I tell the person to ask the postmaster to put his denial of our request in writing. Of course, he never did.
We continued to receive our mail safely with the mailbox at the new location … just a few feet from where it was before … until this week. No mail drop off and no mail pick up, even though the little red flag is raised.
My husband calls the post office to find out why we aren’t receiving our mail. The postmaster says he decided to put a hold on all of our mail because he didn’t like where we put our mailbox. He said he did not care that the carrier Ok’d the move. His word was FINAL. When my husband attempted to explain that our disabled son was risking his life to get the mail, the postmaster general HUNG UP THE PHONE!
My husband got off work early to go into the post office to get our mail (that is now being held hostage). He tells the lady behind the counter to let the postmaster know that it is very rude of him to hang up on customers.
The postmaster was behind the door and apparently heard my husband say this and so he started walking toward my husband. My husband told him, “You don’t just hang up when people are trying to talk to you. That’s rude!”
The postmaster general then falsely accused my husband of having used profanity over the phone, to which he responded, “I did not use profanity. That is a LIE!” As hard as he could, the postmaster general then slammed the top half of the door in my husband’s face.
He then walked around behind the main counter and loudly told my husband that he was not allowed to get his mail. In front of everyone in the lobby, he told my husband that we could not have our mail!
So, they won’t deliver mail to our house, nor will they allow us to pick up our mail at the office.
This is an outrage! What kind of public servant does this to taxpaying citizens?

Danni – That sounds totally outrageous! Even if this guy is not going to accommodate your request (which seems totally reasonable to me) there is no reason for him to pull a “power trip” like that. Sad stuff … especially from an agency that has been bailed out to the tune of billions of tax dollars. You know, my family lives on a busy street and our postal folks routinely bring the mail up to the house – without us even asking. They are friendly and helpful. How crazy is it that the people who are doing the work – who want to help – are prevented from doing so because of bureaucrats like this? We’ve forwarded a link to this letter to the U.S. Postmaster. Anybody remember when we suggested a photo contest for the hottest, sexiest mail carrier? My carrier was excited about posing for this contest, but then……no more photos allowed..!! She has a route where she wears her clothes, and in nice weather she delivers wearing shorts (not quite Daisy Dukes – but close) and tight tee shirts (sigh). Please, God, let us have a Spring and Summer this year……

SicWillie used to run articles with photos of “Hottest Lawyer” (females, of course) for our entertainment and his getting “cred points” from the contestants. When someone promoted the idea of our female mail carriers was about the time SicWillie stopped letting us post photos in our comments. My mail carrier was extremely disappointed, but she has adored me ever since!
Damn, this public official sounds more demented and power-hungry than Curtis Loftis! Wait, no Curtis is still more psychotic than this postmaster asshole. He yells at everyone in earshot, screams about those evil insiders and has conspiracy theories that keep him up at night. That postmaster should lose his job because he has no business dealing with the public. Curtis’ job should be appointed because he (and TRav and Chellis) have all failed miserably at the job. There ought to be some qualifications to manage that much money. A spoiled, mentally unstable, rich, college drop out, exterminator shouldn’t have the keys to our treasury!
Why is everyone down on Curtis today ? He is doing a good job trying to keep the crooks out of the state retirement fund. We pay the most in fees and get the least return of any state. We need someone like Curtis working for SC.
As to the postmaster, someone needs to call up the ladder and get this jerk on he unemployment line .

This statement is demonstrably false. There is a balance of risk and return that serves this particular fund in its current status quite well. And it is far from the worst performing fund. If you comment as you have, you should at least use facts instead of ideology.

The only thing different between my comments to the Post Office site and my comments on this blog is that I have xxxx out the postal employee’s name since I do not know him nor did I see his name badge to confirm the name he was addressed by another customer

I went into the PO to mail a small package. An individual in front of me wanted to pick up his mail. Apparently he was unable to get his mail delivered and the person he called hung up on him. While he was telling this to someone through a doorway a Mr. xxxxxxx(think this is correct) walked up and he and the man engaged in a yelling match at which point the man demanded his mail and Mr. xxxxxxx refused to give it to him. The man became enraged, cursed out loud, slammed out the front door and left the parking lot in a hurry. At that point I almost decided to leave out of concern that the man would return before I could get out of there safely. Although the man made no verbal threats I felt like the man was not in total control of his emotions and in less control after he was told he wasn’t getting his mail.
No doubt the man was rude and crude demanding his mail. Mr. xxxxxxx was loud and rude back to him. To me the point is that Mr. xxxxxxx could have taken the high road and stayed out of the ditch with the irate man. He could either have backed off and let someone else deal with the man or simply given him his mail and let him be on his way. When he chose to take a stand against this man in the middle of the Post Office he put me and the other customers in the Post Office at risk. For the remainder of the time I was in the PO I kept one eye on the counter and one eye on the parking lot. I had already planned my exit in case I saw the man’s truck re-enter the parking lot. Now, if any of you bottom feeders are questioning why I did not state Chapin PO in my statement then you have never completed a survey by these people. On my receipt I transferred all the data the survey needed to tell them what time, what place, what clerk waited on me, how much I paid and how much change I got back
Thank you for posting this. You got everything 100% accurate. You’re damn right I was irate. You’re damn right I was pissed. You try going for two weeks with no mail, and then be treated like that when you’re just trying to get some answers. The postmaster started this fiasco, not me. The postmaster is the one ratcheting up the issues, not me. The postmaster hung up on me in my ear, not me.
When I was dealing with the lady behind the counter, being as calm as I could be, everything was going as smooth as it could be under the circumstances. It was only when he heard the address and walked all the way across the room and *needlessly* injected himself into the conversation that things got heated. There are two things that I don’t abide in this world and will stand up to, 100%: a liar and a thief. And when you’re a bully on top of it, sorry, but you’re going down.
If you go to the “Chapin News” Facebook page and read the accounts of what other people have to say about how rude the postmaster is, talking down to people and hanging up on them, I’m not nearly the first person he’s treated like this. But by God, I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure that I’m the last.

What does tax payer have anything to do with it? The USPS receives no tax dollars. Rate payers fund the USPS, through the sales of postage. Your Wal-Mart has more to do with tax payer money, than the USPS.

When the government wants to weaken an agency they defund it. The USPS receives no tax dollars, so congress passed a tax of 5.5 billion dollars a year. No different than medicare. They also passed a law that the USPS could not compete with the private sector on non market dominant products. This over regulated and over taxed agency had no option but to use their credit line to help keep the agency running. The private sector would be running to Canada, if they has to go through a portion of these obstacles. Even though I don’t condone that Post masters actions. Lieing about the agency should be pointed out.

That would love indicate some aspect of the individual pointing out how exceptions are made for others but not for his disable a new…I understand the purpose of it being to emphasize that he’s entitled to the variance, by its not discrimination…
It’s quite simple actually. My letter to the postmaster was to request that an accommodation be made to allow our disabled son to be able to access our mailbox. He denied the request and is now holding our mail. This is discrimination against the disabled. He is denying my son the right to be able to get his mail. He is also denying our rights to get the mail. Maybe some people aren’t aware of this, but discrimination can be against disabled people, too.
USPS Customer Service said that he has no right to deny our request. It is a safety issue. She informed me that since we own the mailbox, we didn’t even need to get permission to move it.
That may not be fair, it may not be just, but its not discrimination… And therez nothing that indicated the basis for the denial of the variance was because your son is disabled? Abuse of power, maybe, it could be because he thinks you’re a jerk (rightly or wrongly) I’m just saying it wasn’t discrimination from a definitional standpoint, that’s all. Did u have some indication you would have received the variance BUT for the fact your son is disabled?
Anyone can be discrimated against – you werent unless something was left out of the story.
Well, there’s this…there are other houses in our neighborhood where the mailboxes have been allowed to be moved due to safety reasons. Since he has approved other people’s requests for safety reasons, I can only assume that he’s denying us due to disability reasons. However, since he refuses to tell us anything other than, “I don’t like where your mailbox is,” we can only assume. He won’t talk to us. He won’t put his denial in writing. So, I’m left to assume a lot of things…since he refuses to communicate with us.
I believe I can figure out what is going on here if you just answer 3 questions…

After reading all these comments between the Blooms and others, I’ve made the following observations. 1) They seem to have anger/emotional issues on par with that of State Treasurer Curtis Loftis. 2) They respond to all comments and defend themselves as the David vs. Goliath like the narcissict-in-chief, Curtis Loftis. My advice would be to calm the fuck down and deal with the situation like an adult by calmly contacting someone in SC but outside of Chapin. My first comment is the post office has NOT received billions of tax dollars for a bailout. Please research your facts. Second. as a postal carrier I believe you 100%. My postmaster routinely yells at customers and hangs up the phone on them. Mgt has no clue how to deal with customers. I tell everyone to go the the USPS website and click the contact us link and air your complaint there. I promise he will get a call from his boss. Additionally, find out who the POOM (post office operations mgr) for your district is and contact him or her directly. You will get action then. As a carrier, if you were my customer you would get your mail no matter what. Your stamp and mailing purchases pay my salary. AND as a customer you can put your mailbox wherever you want. I have some customers mailboxes at their back doors, in alleys on their garages…anywhere they want.

The Postmaster General is second-highest paid U.S. government official… no way did these people have verbal exchanges with this person.
The toughest jobs are in retail. Not only does one have to deal with whoever walks in the front door, sometimes one is misunderstood and yelled at.

20+ years ago, my neighbor in a small town had a back problem that impaired her walking. She casually mentioned it to the mail carrier and USPS started bringing her mail to a box she put on her front door. She said they told her they did that for handicapped people.
My mother lived in the country in another county and became orthopedically handicapped also. She had a circular drive in front of her house, they told her she could move her mailbox from the roadside to the bottom of her front steps and they drove off the road and delivered the mail there.
Both mailboxes had to be moved back to the street/road after they died.
Is the problem here that there are non-handicapped people who can get to the mailbox with no problems? Is there no other position on the front line of the property that the mailbox can be moved to that is safer for all and more accessible to the handicapped household member?
